Listed as one of the 50 Best Villas in the Mediterranean by the Sunday Times in February 2017

Villa Virago was fully renovated from 2015-2016. There are 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a variety of living areas and 800sqm of walled gardens. The private swimming pool offers a huge wraparound wooden pool deck and, uniquely, the villa also offers access to a small private, gated beach (shared between just 14 houses on the street) just 100 metres from the front door as well as having the public beach of Perd'e Sali just a few more metres away.

The villa is especially suitable for families with children and we provide a range of equipment and special measures to ensure peace of mind for parents and fun for the kids. More information is available below in the "Families with Children" section

Open plan living and kitchen area. The kitchen is newly fitted and modern, with poured concrete countertops and sleek white units. It is fully equipped with fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, electric fan oven, gas hob, kettle and blender and plenty of glassware and crockery for dinner parties. There is a marble topped floating island on wheels which also doubles as a dining table for up to 6 people as well as an extendable dining table that can comfortably seat 12-14 people.

The main living room is centered around the open fireplace and has seating for 8 people, and there are also 4 super comfy beanbags for additional seating. The TV nook is located under the stairs and offers a quiet corner with a TV and X-box on which you can watch the large library of DVD's we provide or play one of the games.

The main living area has double doors to both the front garden and the rear living terrace and pool area.

Also downstairs are two twin bedrooms which share a sleek, modern shower room. One bedroom has double doors to the back garden and the other has double doors to a private covered terrace framed by climbing jasmine plants.

Up the impressive spiral staircase, the first floor offers a small living area with access to a large balcony and a master bedroom with access to the same balcony. There are also two other double bedrooms and two brand new luxury bathrooms, both with large walk-in showers and double sinks.

The 800sqm of garden is fully fenced in making it safe for children of all ages, and boasts a private swimming pool (8x4x1.25m) and a huge wooden pool deck. The swimming pool is fitted with a pool alarm to give guests with small children additional peace of mind. The pool deck is furnished with XXL beanbags as well as a four poster bed for you to relax and unwind on. An olive tree grows up through the pool deck to offer shade and the jasmine growing at the far end of the pool perfumes the air

There is an outdoor covered living terrace by the pool which offers a sofa and armchairs and is the perfect spot for relaxing in the shade.

The garden also offers lawned areas and plenty of mature trees (figs, oranges, lemons, citron, almond, date palm, olive and carob to name a few). The barbeque and outdoor food preparation area has a sink and large double grills and is shaded by a large fig tree. There is also a shaded outdoor eating area surrounded by white bougainvillea and jasmine for up to 14 people and, on the pool deck, a solar al fresco shower with hot and cold water.

There is a separate laundry room in the garden with a washing machine and an additional fridge

The villa is at the end of a closed street meaning there is no passing traffic and as well as a parking space inside the villa gates, there's plenty more parking spaces on the road outside. The marina is less than a 10 minute walk away and offers a restaurant, coffee bar, tobacconists, scuba centre, kayak and boat hire. The beach is just 100 from the front door and the buzzing town of Pula is just 4.5km away

We believe in recycling and love picking up, refurbishing and repurposing fleamarket finds to make the décor at the villa funky and unique. From the spice rack made from old test tubes to bedside lamps made from wagon axles, pictures made from vintage photographs and chairs covered in découpage we're sure you will love the way our quirky finds mix with the polished concrete floors, white walls and sleek lines of the villa

We have worked hard to make the villa a fun, relaxing place to be and know you will love your stay here. However, we also know that it can often be the little extras that make a holiday truly special so have included the following services as standard for all bookings:

Welcome Book - Our insiders guide to the villa and local area. Everything you could possibly need from where to find the fuse box to restaurant recommendations to ensure you have a fun, trouble free stay

Welcome pack - A complimentary glass of prosecco to sip as we show you around and a basket of fruit to welcome you and say "thank you" for choosing Villa Virago. We also supply less glamorous (but more essential) items such as a stock of loo roll, bin bags, dishwasher tablets, oil and spices and cleaning products.

Towels and linen - We supply all towels and linen clean when you arrive, and for stays of two weeks or more we will automatically change them for you weekly. We also supply both beach towels and pool towels because we know your baggage allowance is both limited and precious!

Cleaning - Final cleaning is included in the price, and for bookings of two weeks or more we also include a weekly clean.

24 hour assistance - We'll be in the local area and on hand at any time for advice or emergencies

We also have a host of additional services we're happy to supply for you on request at a nominal charge

Fridge stocking - just send us a shopping list and we'll make sure the kitchen is stocked with all of the essentials you need to create delicious meals. Especially handy for those arriving late and not able to get to their shops on their first day, or for anyone whose holiday time is too precious to be spent in the supermarket! Whether you use this as a one-off service or would like us to deliver more often we're happy to help. Or maybe you'd like to order a chilled bottle of champagne and a bunch of roses for a special someone to find on arrival. If it can be sourced in Sardinia, we'll make it happen

Additional linen changes - if you would like your sheets or towels changed more often during your stay, this can be arranged

Additional cleaning - if your holiday time is too precious to be spent mopping floors, we're happy to send in our cleaners for you as often as required

Chef - We know some great local chefs and would be happy to put you in touch with them directly. Whether you want three meals a day prepared and served for you, or just a one-off dinner, they are friendly, versatile, multi-lingual and make extremely good food

Masseur and beauty treatments - We also know some great local masseurs and beauticians happy to pay house calls and pamper you by the pool

Of course, this isn't an exhaustive list and we're always happy to go the extra mile for our guests so if you can think of anything else at all we can do to help, just send us a message and we'll do what we can!

We know how important your peace of mind is when travelling with little ones so we've done our best to make sure families with children can enjoy a fun, relaxing holiday here at Villa Virago. Some of the equipment and facilities we offer on request and the measures we've taken are listed below, but please don't hesitate to contact us if there's anything else we can do for you to ensure you have the best of stays with your family.

The garden is fully walled and gated

We've removed any toxic plants (such as oleander) and cacti

The swimming pool has an alarm, available on request

The local beach is sandy with shallow water, making it perfect for children

We can supply cots, high chairs, baby monitors, a baby bath, bottle sterilisers, a bumbo, stair gates, bed rails, a potty, a paddling pool, a selection of toys, a changing mat, children's crockery and cutlery and a pram on request

We provide a food processor, microwave, blender and pressure cooker to make preparing food for your little ones easy

To help you stick to your baggage allowances we're happy to shop prior to your arrival and stock the villa with everything from nappies to your favourite brand of baby food. Just ask us for more details

An Xbox with a selection of non-violent games is supplied at the villa, and can also be used to play the U-rated DVD's we provide

We believe it is important to keep upgrading the villa every year to make sure guests have the best possible holiday.

For Summer 2018 we have upgraded and redecorated the bedrooms to make Villa Virago better than ever.

The new aircon units, installed in summer 2017 did mean that some guests who liked to keep them on all the time did have issues with the fusebox tripping out but for 2018 we have upgraded the villa to a massive 5kw electricity supply to prevent the problem occurring in the future

About Sarena

I spent over a decade working in the luxury travel business before giving it all up to dedicate myself to the renovation and management of my own dream villa, Villa Virago. I am passionate about Sardinia, design, antiques, recycling and great holidays... all of which I hope comes through in the Villa Virago experience for my guests.

Sarena purchased this villa in 2015

Why Sarena chose Perd'e Sali

I have been in love with the Pula area of Sardinia for several years now and for a few years had been looking for the right villa in the area to renovate and offer as a holiday rental. When I first visited Villa Virago, it was love at first sight and I decided within minutes that I had finally found my dream villa... just days later the paperwork was completed and I was handed the keys. I loved the architecture with it's curving turrets outside and that amazing granite spiral staircase that dominates the living areas. The luxury of a private beach for the occupants of our street was just too good to miss; I have never before or since seen a villa in Sardinia that could offer something like that, especially 100m away. The villa needed a lot of TLC when I first saw it as it hadn't been renovated since it was built in the 1970's so I rolled up my sleeves and set to work over a 12 month period with an amazing team of volunteers found via the Workaway site. This was a real labour of love and such an amazing learning process, and seeing my dream for what the villa could become slowly take shape was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. Not only did we install a pool, new floors, refurb two bathrooms and add a third, add a brand new kitchen, lay a new lawn and completely rewire but we also hand sourced and created 90% of the furniture from fleamarkets and antique shops making the villa totally unique and stylish. To have been selected as one of the "Best 50 Villas in the Mediterranean" by The Times in February 2017 was more than I could possibly have hoped for when I first started the project. I love Villa Virago... and I can't wait to have you here to visit and see what you think!

Guestbook comments from the owner

we stayed in this property with 4 adults and three kids and felt very comfortable during our stay. Plenty of space inside and outside for two families. All facilities were working properly and, very importantly, the villa was spotlessly clean. The matrasses were comfortable and surroundings very quiet. Sarena is a very friendly host and makes a real effort to make sure her guest can enjoy their precious holiday time. Our queries during our stay were quicly attended and the check in / out procedures were smooth. Thanks Sarena!

Un soggiorno meraviglioso

  • 5 of 5

Very nice villa though a little overpriced

Problems with the electricity supply meant the power constantly cuts out which is not what you would expect for the price

Owner's Response: We're so sorry you had issues with the electricity during your stay. For 2017 the power in the villa was the standard Italian residential supply of 3-4kw which I had calculated to be more than enough for normal use and most of our guests had no issues at all. Unfortunately we didn't take into account that some guests do need more than the "normal" amount of electricity supply so for 2018 we have paid extra and upgraded the power supply to a whopping 5kw which should mean this issue never reoccurs... Although we do still strongly encourage guests to use the "eco" settings on the dishwasher and washing machine and only to use the aircon when they are actually in a room. Being green and aware of our energy usage benefits us all :)

Beautiful house and surrounding areas.

  • 4 of 5

We had such a fabulous week. Sarena was very welcoming and helpful. We hired Alberto, who offers chauffeuring, instead of hiring a car, which was not only better value but you can't beat local knowledge when finding beaches and restaurants!

The house was immaculate and beautifully designed. We loved visiting the marina at night for a gelato and coffee to end the evenings.

We didn't use the private beach as it was very weedy, but that didn't matter as we were off adventuring every day.

We would definitely recommend it!

Lovely property in a beautiful part of Sardinia.

  • 4 of 5

I stayed here with my extended family and we had a lovely time in our week stay here. The owner, Sarena, went out of her way to be helpful and enhanced our stay. The property was spacious and well equipped generally. We had three children under 2 and Sarena provided us with pretty much everything we needed limiting our need to carry extra baggage. She also organised a private chef and a trip to the stunning Chia beach for us.

There were a few snagging issues around hot water which Sarena sorted out, and the electricity kept tripping out but Sarena advised us on how best to manage this.

The only thing I would say that is that "private beach" isn't really usable and probably should be downplayed. The public beach just down the road is however perfectly fine for families.

I loved Sardinia, and I would recommend Villa Virago for anyone looking for a family stay here, however, I think our children were probably a bit young to fully enjoy it so we will likely return in a few years time when they are a little older.

Nice Stay at Villa Virago

  • 3 of 5

Overall we had a pleasant stay in Villa Virago. The owner, Serina, was charming, attentive and sorted out a couple of significant problems we had as quickly as possible. The villa itself had been refurbished very tastefully and was well equipped. It had a good pool area and attractive gardens. However despite its qualities we felt there were some opportunities for improvement to justify 4 or 5 stars compared to other places we've stayed. It would be a good idea to have a visitor book where comments could be left.

The ground floor bathroom that served two bedrooms is small and spartan compared to the bathrooms upstairs, little more than a cloakroom with a shower. It was adequate but lacked any surfaces to place items on and only two fittings on the walls to hang towels etc. The sink also came lose at one point but was quickly fixed. The garden was really nice but there were no loungers to sit/lie on in the shade of the trees. The only seating area outside, in shade, was a settee and chair plus a couch at the front of the villa. Security was a slight concern as some window and door locks were very stiff to operate and secure, needing some TLC.

We also lost water twice, for reasons outside the owner's control, which she worked hard to fix. Fortunately the pool provided water to flush the loos. There were some other minor issues as well like the controller for the Xbox didn't work.

The 'private' shared beach, listed as a feature, looked like a vacant building plot and seemed to gather dead seaweed. However there was a very good public beach a short distance away so this was not an issue. In summary a slightly mixed experience but we had a good time and were sufficiently impressed with Sardinia to visit again.

Owner's Response: It's upsetting to recieve the first feedback lower than 4-5 stars. I put so much love, hard work and thought into creating Villa Virago and I certainly didn't do it with the aim of providing guests with a 3 star or average stay. Ah well, there's no such thing as bad feedback and even when it is negative it gives a chance to improve. Rather than a guestbook I do provide a comprehensive villa book with a guide and reccomendations to the local area but if you think a guestbook would make a big improvement to my guest's stays I'll find a nice one as soon as possible. I also checked all of the doors and windows and yes you are right, although all of them lock securely a couple were a bit stiff and needed a spray of WD40 which I have done now. The X-box controller is working just fine so I'm not sure what went wrong there. There are full instructions for using it in the villa book but I do wish you had mentioned it during your stay. I know the downstairs bathroom is smaller than the great big bathrooms upstairs (2.5x1.5m as opposed to 4x3m upstairs) but it is a full bathroom (big walk in shower, loo and sink) and a fairly standard size. I've tried to make it just as stylish as those upstairs... It has the same number of towel hooks as upstairs too but I will look at having more storage built in as soon as possible. The reason the gardens are so lovely is because of the automatic irrigation system. However that is also the reason I can't put loungers under the trees. Guests are of course welcome to spread out one of the beach towels provided to lie on the lawn under the trees. There are two shady terraces with sofas, the shaded outdoor dining area and the beanbags and bed by the pool.I will however look at getting some umbrellas to provide more shade on the deck if you think that would help. Regarding the algae on the beach, this is a new issue specific to this year along much of the coastline in the area. It gets swept in by the sea in winter and acts as a fabulous natural barrier against erosion. Normally the wind and tides clear it away again in spring but for some reason this has not happened yet this year. It's far from ideal but that is nature for you... And I'm hopeful we'll have a good change of wind and tide soon to get the beach lovely and clear again! Thank you for your feedback, I will do my best to use it to improve the villa for future guests and horrible as it is to get an average review, I am determined this will be the last! Thank you

Villa Virago is perfectly located for a family holiday. The small, gated private beach (for the exclusive use of just 14 properties on the street) is just 100m away with the sandy public beach just a few metres further on.

Also within walking distance is the friendly, relaxed little marina of Perd'e Sali 750m away. There you'll find a coffee bar (perfect for breakfasts or evening aperitifs), a gelateria (ice cream shop), restaurant (great steaks and pizzas) and a tobacconists. There's also a kayak hire centre, a dive centre and boat hire all still at the marina.

The buzzing town of Pula is 4km away and offers a host of great restaurants and shopping opportunities as well as live concerts in the town square over the summer.

For the young (and the young of heart) the BluFan water park is 4.5km awayand offers a great day out. Alternatively, head to the Is Molas golf resort (7km) or the riding centre in the village (1.5km) if you're feeling sporty.

Beach wise, you're spoilt for choice as Nora (also home to the ruins of the Roman capital of Sardinia) is 8.5km away, and between 15-20 minutes drive you also have the famous beaches at Santa Margherita, Chia and Tuerredda.

Cagliari, Sardinia's principal city is just 35 minutes drive away

A car is not essential for your stay here as the beach and local facilities are easily accessible by foot. We are also happy to offer a supermarket shopping and delivery service for a small additional charge. However, the local area is so beautiful it would be a shame not to get out and explore it for at least a few days, so we would reccommend car hire to our guests
