About this property

West Wing Of An Original Duchy Manor House

Nestled in 19acres of grounds Auchenhay Manor House boasts views of the Solway coastline. Just 4 miles from the centre of Kirkcudbright, a thriving fishing town with artists fairs held across the summer and full of cafes and local shops. Auchenhay also offers an ideal location to explore the whole of Scotlands South west coast. The whole house has been recently renovated to offer guests a luxury stay in one of the most beautiful areas of coastline. The west wing is named The Duchy, and originally formed the main kitchen and servants areas. It has now been fully converted to offer luxurious accommodation. There are 2 large bedrooms, the Master bedroom boasts a Superking bed (can become two full sized single beds),a sofa, a 50" tv and an ensuite toilet. The second bedroom has a supering bed (again, can be spilt into two full sized single beds) and a 50" tv. Both bedrooms also have wardrobes, bedside tables and seating. There is a large family bathroom with large shower and freestanding bath. Downstairs is a downstairs toilet, fully equipped kitchen (with dishwasher and washer/dryer) all modern cooking utensils, coffee machine, fridge freezer and microwave. The lounge has two large leather sofas, a log burner and a 45" tv along with a large central coffee table. The property also boasts a log fired hot tub outside which can be warm within 3 hours of lighting, a gas barbecue and plenty of outside seating.
Auchenhay House has a private driveway leading through 5 acres of secluded woodland. To the south of the house is a further 14 acres of land to walk. We have resident buzzards, kites, barn owls, tawny owls and long eared owls along with rabbits and deer that enjoy the area.
Locally there is a huge amount to do with beaches within minutes of the house, golf course, fly and sea fishing, and a number of local towns and villages providing amenities and a range of local foods.

Lording it for the week.
Lovely spacious accomodation with views over farmland to the sea in the distance. Owners were very friendly, greeting us when we arrived. the accomodation had every thing you would need to make your stay comfortable. unfortunately we had to cut our stay short due to a medical emercency. The owners were very sympathetic and offered us a discount if we were to book again in the future. This was very generous because this was no fault of their own and they would still have to make the property good for their next visitors.

A lovely stay
A lovely property a few minutes drive from Kirkcudbright. Very spacious and comfortable. My only minor criticism is that there was no kitchen roll or washing-up liquid! I regard these as essentials. Otherwise well equipped. Owners on hand if you needed them but not intrusive.

Fantastic luxurious accommodation in lovely surroundings with fine views
Booking process clear & straightforward. Communication good. Hosts very friendly and accommodating. Personal touches very nice and welcoming. Loved the log fired hot tub and outdoor pod. Plenty of logs provided for this and the indoor log burner. We all loved feeding the pigs, they were very entertaining. Enjoyed walking in the field at the back of the house. Loved the property very much and will return. Would highly recommend. Loved Laggan's restuarant & view, recommended by Sue and enjoyed exploring the surrounding area. Many thanks to Martin and Sue, excellent hosts.

About the host

We are a family of three, and we live in the main house. We have lived and worked around the world with major corporations, and decided recently to move to the South West of Scotland for a different, more relaxed way of life. Our daughter goes to the local school, and we run online businesses from the house (as well as sneak off to the sea side as often as we can, and go out on our little sea boat for fish and lobsters). We have been here for over two years now and love every minute of it, especially the incredible sun sets and wildlife we have a chance to see.

Why they chose this property

The views from the windows were stunning, and the history of the house is incredible. Built as a Duchy house and originally with over 400 acres (it now has only 19 acres remaining!) it looks really unique. We have since discovered that it is possible that Tennyson and Darwin may well have stayed here along with members of the Carlyle family so it is a house with a long history which we have enjoyed discovering. Best of all we can be at a beach with 4 or 5 minutes which is fantastic, and we really love to go to the cafes in Kirkcudbright and watch the fisherman go about their business.

What makes this property unique

It has to be the beaches and the very friendly local people. Everyone says hello and its a part of the world where everyone smiles, it must be the sea air!. There is a huge amount to do locally with kids- lagoon outdoor, forests, Cocoa Bean factory, Loch Ken outdoor centre and much more plus loads of restaurants and a bustling local art scene.
