Great House! Great Property!

  • 4 of 5

Great rental property! We stayed the month of April and had a wonderful time. The living area and 2 bedrooms have sliding doors that open to a screened-in porch. They pocket into each other so there is no obstruction which makes you feel like you're outside and closer to the ocean. The view and breeze were awesome. The master bedroom is on one side while your guest stay on the other side for privacy. The pool, hot tub, hammock, tiki bar with TV and downstairs fridge were just perfect. It also has two separate water accesses to the ocean for a small boat or kayaks.

Every April for the last 10 years we've rented houses in the Keys and this was our 2nd most favorite house (favorite had a sandy beach for our sailboat)

This is a great house on a great piece of property with a great property manager!

Thank You Lisa for everything, you're the best!

Poorly Maintained House, Incompetent Management

  • 1 of 5

We stayed for a month at this house in May 2015 and would not recommend it, or the property management company (Florida Keys Realty) to future visitors. The house is in poor condition and neither the owners nor property managers put forth any effort to appropriately maintain it.

The biggest problem we found at the house was the bathroom. As soon as we arrived, it was clear that the sink would flood whenever it was turned on. The cabinetry under the sink was already ruined and every time the sink was used, the entire bathroom would be covered in water. Considering there are only two bathrooms in the house, having one be unusable is a major problem.

This was just one of many, many problems at the house. For example, when we arrived there was broken glass covering the floor inside the house and on the porch. We needed to spend the first few days of vacation cleaning and vacuuming. The master bedroom TV had a post-it note stuck to it that said “DO NOT USE: EXPLODED.” (We were really never sure what that even meant.) The windows in one bedroom would not stay closed, meaning that the air conditioning could never adequately cool the house. Meanwhile, many of the sliding glass doors will not open. Although the observation dock is a nice place to enjoy the view, it is made of fiberglass that would get into your skin if you ever touched the dock. The kitchen appliances are all of low quality, including a coffeepot that leaked all over the counter. The outdoor lights were burned out, making it difficult to go outdoors after dark.

Multiple emails to the property manager, attempting to address the variety of issues at the house, received contradictory, confusing, and outright rude replies. For example, one property manager claimed that a faucet for the sink was ordered but would not arrive for three weeks. Then, the next day she sent an email saying that she had never been notified about the sink issues. Unless you want to spend your vacation on the phone, and even being accused of lying, do not stay at this house!

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that Mrs. Green was not happy with her stay at Oceanfront Seclusion. Every effort was made to accommodate her in any way possible. She refused us access to the property to address any of her concerns. The bathroom faucet was replaced a few weeks before her arrival and must have been faulty as it broke again within two weeks. There was a temporary handle put on it so the faucet did work. The leak was a separate issue and would have taken about 10 minutes to fix. Mrs. Green vehemently denied us access to the home to make the repair. Many of her other grievances are unfounded and this review is the first we have heard of them. The kitchen appliances are only a few years old and of high quality. We discovered during the next tenants stay that the coffee pot was cracked at the bottom. If Mrs. Green had notified us we could have replaced it. The tenants that were in the home prior to this rental and since this rental are quite happy. In regards to the multiple emails to the property manager attempting to address the variety of issues we have a copy of each one. We offered to either correct any problems she had, relocate them to another home where they would be happier or refund their money so they could find another home. All of our responses to Mrs. Green and offers of solutions were met with indifference. Sincerely Florida Keys Realty, Inc

Great House

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for the month of July 2009. The house was great, with plenty to do for all members of the family. The property was huge for the Keys and had a little 'beachside camp' with a firepit. Under the house was a tiki bar and 'ring on a string' game that kept us all entertained when we were not on the water. The house was well appointed, very clean, and well stocked with supplies, even beach towels. There were kayaks and bicycles to use as well. We brought our dog and the whole underneath area including the pool area was fenced. This was really great for keeping track of him. The teenagers enjoyed this area a great deal.

The downside of this house is that the water access is very shallow with a rock hard bottom if you miss the small staked channel. There were days our flats boat scraped bottom coming in. The dock is actually across the street on a small, rather narrow canal. If you have a larger boat, this house is not for you. If you have a smaller flats type boat or are simply looking for a great 'hang out house' I would highly recommend this home. Bottom line- really great house/ so-so water access.

Located about 21 miles from Key West, Cudjoe Key is probably best known for 'Fat Albert', a military aerostat blimp tethered at the north end of the island since the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early sixties. This Key also has some interesting theories about it's name. One is simply that early settlers would come here to 'cut joe', the joewood trees that were so prevalent. Another talks of an early Key Wester with a speech impediment who referred to his cousin Joe, then living on the island, as 'Cud Joe'. A third theory has a freed slave residing here taking the name Cudjoe for himself in reverence to a Jamaican rebel slave leader.

Cudjoe Key is mostly inhabited on the southern shores below US 1, while much of the rest of the island is wetlands and pinewoods, with many cabbage palms, a somewhat rare plant in the Keys. Bow Channel which separates Cudjoe and Sugarloaf Keys was named after a lady pioneer, Lily Lawrence Bow, who resided on the western shore from 1904 to 1906.
