Separate WCs1
Space 1,800 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

4 double bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms, courtyard garden

Leontine in Eauze is a large old stone townhouse in the heart of this small town. The house was completely renovated by us in 2007 and is now a bright welcoming home with excellent facilities including 4 large double-bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, lovely lounge, garden with brick built barbecue, large garage, electric central heating and two wood burning fires in the kitchen and living room. Free wifi included.

The rooms at ground level have tiled floors while upstairs boasts some fine oak flooring.

The four double bedrooms are all en-suite with new showers and fittings and can comfortably sleep eight adults, with ample room for cots and camp beds for small children if required. Two of the bedrooms are very large, with super-king sized beds. The other two are good twin bedded rooms.

The best thing about the house is its location just around the corner from the charming pedestrianised town square with its 12th century church, fountain and local bars.

About Peter Kirkwood

We are a retired couple who split our time between our home in Scotland and our holiday home in Eauze, France. We have long been francophiles and when we visited the Gers region we realised that this was the 'true' France we had been seeking. Gers is a region proud of its gastronomy, from all things goose and duck to the wonderful Armagnac and Gascony wines. It is a little off the beaten tourist track and for this reason is so much more authentic and relaxed than many areas.

We undertook a loving restoration of Leontine in Eauze shortly after purchasing this wonderful old stone townhouse. The house now offers all mod-cons including 4 ensuite bathrooms to the 4 double bedrooms, fully fitted kitchen and lounge with TV/DVD but it still retains its character. This house has been our home over the past 8 years so expect to find personal touches when you arrive.

Peter Kirkwood purchased this house in 1997

Why Peter Kirkwood chose Éauze

Leontine is located right in the heart of the small town of Eauze in the middle of the Gers countryside. You get the amenities of a small town including bars, restaurants, tourist office, pharmacists, supermarkets, museum and swimming pool/playground whilst being just a few kilometres away from rolling countryside and vineyards. The town is so small, you can walk around it in 15 minutes and is an ideal base to explore this lovely region.

The house is a large old stone property with plenty of space for families or groups of friends to make themselves at home. The upstairs boasts 4 large bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms and the downstairs boasts a large comfortable lounge with TV/DVD and cupboard of kids toys. The kitchen is fully fitted. There is a cool garage to store wine/food and a courtyard garden with brick built barbecue and giant chess board.

What makes this house unique

The town square with its ancient church, fountain and bars/restaurants is just around the corner - 50m away. Eauze is a delightful little town with all the amenities you could desire including a very helpful tourist office, supermarkets, theatre, market, wine shops. There is a wonderful local market in Eauze that takes place every Thursday morning.

Lovers of Roman Archaeology will find plenty to do in the area; there is a newly excavated and extremely well presented site of a large Roman villa in Eauze, and another at Seviac, which is a 30 minute drive. The museum in Eauze has a vast collection of Roman coins and jewellery, found by chance about 50 years ago.

There are plenty of activities on the doorstep such as nearby swimming pools, water parks or swimming lakes, tennis courts, horse-riding, hippodrome horse racing track less than 5km away and motor racing track at Nogaro 15km away.

The Gers region comes into its own in the summer months with countless local events such as concerts, festivals and art exhibitions in its towns and villages.

Perfect home in perfect village!!!

  • 5 of 5

Three of us stayed 11 days in Peter’s charming home in Eauze, a uniquely situated village for exploring the beautiful rolling and verdant farmlands and vinyards of the Gers. There are many remarkable villages and cities that can be reached within 30-90 minutes drive and the village itself boasts a Gallo-Roman ruin and a large and complete Thursday market. We spent time in the large kitchen making meals and enjoying the fireplace during the cooler evenings. The large terrace in front has a table and chairs for relaxing in the warmer weather. Janet and Derek, the caretakers, were friendly and helpful getting us settled in and are delightful company.

We were truly sad to depart from this delightful home to continue on with our scheduled trip but already want to return in the future.

A huge house for the whole family to spread out in

  • 5 of 5

We found out about the house through friends of ours and stayed this August with our 5 year old twins. My brother and his family who live in Bordeaux also stayed. There was plenty of room for all 8 of us as the upstairs is huge! The girls loved playing chess on the giant chess board in the garden and we enjoyed being so close to the town square to meander for some food and a coffee on Sunday morning. We also ate a local restaurant, Henri IV which was delicious. Lots of duck! We bought some lovely produce at the local market on Thursday and Sunday and cooked at home using the barbecue in the garden.

During our week there we discovered two water parks for the kids- one in Gondrin just 10 mins drive away and another in Condom, a lovely town about 30 mins away. We also went to Lupiac where there is a gorgeous lake and sandy beach. We definitely recommend Auch as a day trip - a very historic french town. There was plenty to keep the kids occupied and they didn't get too bored when we visited a local Armagnac producer.

The house was clean and comfortable with lots of recommendations of things to do in the area. If you want to discover a different part of France, we'd recommend.

The small town of Eauze (population 4,200) is in the Gers region of the Midi-Pyrenees department in the heart of the ancient area of Gascony. This region is perhaps best known for its Armagnac production and visitors can visit several of the local distilleries to learn about and taste this amber nectar.

Things to do around Eauze:

Eauze is an ancient town dating back to Roman times and boasts many old buildings including its 12th century cathedral in the main square. It’s a simple pleasure just to stroll around the traditional shops and while away some time at one of the many cafés or bars in this lovely town. The locals will appreciate it if you show an interest in one of their two favourite things; rugby and Armagnac. There are plenty of good restaurants just a short walk from the house.

Eauze boasts a local open air swimming pool with baby pool, tennis courts, park/playground, picnic park beside small lake, equestrian centre, and golf course 4km away.

There is a bike hire shop in Eauze if you feel like being truly French.

Every Thursday there is an extensive street market, with local meat, breads, cheeses and produce as well as clothes and many other items.

The village of Gondrin, approximately 10km away on the road to Condom, has an enormous open air fun and water park offering swimming, slides and good picnic facilities.

Lac De L'uby is 15 km away, and provides water sports, swimming and extensive paths for walking, as well as picnic facilities.

There is also a large supermarket on the edge of the town, banks, a post office, many small traditional shops and a tourist office in the square.

Roman Archaeology in Gers

There is a newly excavated and extremely well presented site of a large Roman villa in Eauze, and another at Seviac, which is a 30 minute drive. The museum in Eauze has a vast collection of Roman coins and jewellery, found by chance about 50 years ago.

Things to do in The Gers Region:

The Gers region has many wonderful fortified (bastide) towns worth visiting, some just half an hour’s drive away. Its villages such as Laressingle and Fources are said to be some of the most beautiful in France.

The whole region is renowned for its gastronomy, and specialises in Foie Gras production and poultry dishes such as duck and goose confit.

Eauze is the capital of Armagnac production, with small producers nearby who welcome visitors for tasting and purchasing!

The cities of Auch, Pau, Toulouse and Biarritz make wonderful day trips if you want to experience the attractions of these historic, chic and vibrant cities.

Condom on the River Baise is the regional capital and well worth a visit.

The Atlantic coast is around 90 minutes’ drive away and the raw beauty of the Pyrenees Mountains on the French/Spanish border less than 2 hours.

The Gers region comes into its own in the summer months with countless local events such as concerts, festivals and art exhibitions

Last but not least, the region has its own version of bull-fighting called 'Courses Landaises' where experienced cows (not bulls!) with long horns take on their human opponents on sand filled arenas. Unlike the Spanish version, no harm comes to the cows and its well worth watching this ancient tradition.

If you want a taste of the real France, away from the hordes of Brits in the Dordogne, this could be just what you’re looking for!
