Space 4,305 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

"La Roseraie" is a large, Charentais farmhouse full of character with beautiful exposed oak beams, fireplaces and stone and wood floors.

A 10m x 5m swimming pool will provide the family with endless hours of summer pleasure. There are several acres of mature gardens with a variety of trees, an orchard, rose and herb gardens to explore and flowers in abundance around the lawn areas. Throughout the gardens there are tables and chairs and hammocks!

Four Spacious bedrooms, modern bathrooms and large lounges provide space and tranquillity for all. Three bedrooms have a double and 2 single beds, and one, a double and 1 single, so the house is big enough for several families to holiday together. All bedrooms are en suite with their own shower or bathrooms. There is a large mezzanine games room with pool table, table football, darts and tv /dvd player, and downstairs there is a big dining kitchen. The stone walls keep the property cool in summer, and a large shaded patio provides an ‘al fresco’ dining area for hot summer evenings.

With a table tennis table, badminton court and trampoline as well as the swimming pool, there's plenty to keep the kids engaged! In addition we have friendly pigs, sheep and lambs, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens which the children are welcome to help feed.

"La Vallee des Singes" ( Monkey Valley) is 400 metres walk away, a stunning animal park with over 30 species of monkeys and apes including gorillas and the largest group of Bonobo chimpanzees in Europe.

At "La Roseraie" you are right in the real French countryside surrounded by fields of sunflowers, barley and sweetcorn, but only 2 kilometres from the friendly small town of Romagne with a boulangerie, post office, bar and esteemed restaurant. We have bicycles to lend out without charge, so you can leave the cars on the drive. Larger towns of Civray and Couhe with twice weekly markets, supermarkets, and cinemas are both 12 kilometres away. Within easy drive are historic towns and the rivers Charente and Vienne for canoeing and swimming. Vienne's main tourist attraction Futuroscope is 45 minutes drive away, and the region's capital town of Poitiers even closer. Seaside resorts of La Rochelle and the islands of Ile de Re - see if you can spot Johnny Depp! - and Ile d'oleron are less than 2 hours away.

Here in the heart of the Vienne countryside you can escape from hustle and stress of everyday life. Only 400m from the fascinating La Vallée des Singes (Valley of the monkeys) and just 45 minutes from Futuroscope.

With its mild climate and France’s second sunniest region, the Vienne district of Poitou-Charentes has much to offer visitors. A clean environment, pretty villages and local market towns such as Civray at the heart of the region, Gencay and Poitiers it’s capital city. Vienne also has a highly acclaimed architectural heritage

About John Rogers

We made the decision in 2014 to give up our stressful jobs in Derbyshire and relocate en famille to rural France to run a chambres d'hotes ( bed and breakfast). We love the life here with our animals - pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, cats and guinea pigs. We both previously worked in Education. Helen was a Japanese teacher but now teaches yoga here, and John worked for a World Heritage Site but now looks after the house and the garden. Our girls go to a local college and after 18 months are already fluent in French. We travelled widely in the past, but now feel happy that we have put down roots in such a peaceful. tranquil spot, and are happy to share it with our guests.

John Rogers purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why John Rogers chose Romagne

We spent a long time looking before settling on 'La Roseraie'. It has all we want here. Its a beautiful old house set in extensive grounds, and we enjoy welcoming guests all year round, but also like the fact that we have our own part of the house which is completely separate to the guests. This is the "real" France; sleepy market towns, a slower pace of life, the place to spend long leisurely lunches and enjoy the beautiful countryside.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house has huge character - from the massive bread oven on the terrace, to the landscaped garden and orchard and the huge barns. To own your own swimming pool would have been just a dream in UK! We even spend time there in the summer evenings, lying on the loungers and sipping quality wine at only 3 euros a bottle, and listening to the calls of the family of Little Owls that live in one of our trees.

Quiet peaceful rural haven

  • 5 of 5

This location had the best of both worlds for our family. It's a beautiful old farmhouse close to a small village in the heart of rural France. My wife and myself loved the opportunity to relax, enjoy the countryside and visit the local villages and towns. Our boys loved visiting the nearby monkey park and the theme park in Futuroscope which was a short drive away. The farmhouse itself is beautiful, charming and tranquil. Our boys had a great time swimming in the pool and getting up close to all types of animals. They were very excited collecting eggs for breakfast every morning!

The house itself is very well kept with large, spacious bedrooms. The owners, John and Helen, live in the house and are very warm and welcoming. On arrival, they gave us loads of information about the area and were keen to make sure we enjoyed our stay. They were brilliant with our kids, taking them around with them as they fed the animals and let them help out.

We sampled lots of home made jams and chutneys, all of which were made from produce of the farmhouse and were available with breakfast everyday.

We have already decided to go back for a longer stay (we stayed three days) and couldn't recommend this lovely farmhouse enough.

Owner's Response: Thank you Fred for this lovely review. It was a pleasure having you and your family to stay. Your boys certainly enjoyed life on a little farm! I think the goats especially miss all the attention they got. Hope very much to see you again at La Roseraie in the future.

Really nice, peaceful country setting.

  • 5 of 5

A really nice stay, belle the dog was lovely and the owners, John and Helen, were, as if it were possible, even nicer!

The themed rooms provided were really cosy and clean and the garden area and swimming pool were a delight.

The Owners were really helpful and the 'get away from it all experience' that we were looking for is exactly what we got. lovely, couldn't recommend it enough. Will definitely go again as our first choice option.

Lovely, idyllic b & b, wonderful hosts, can't fault it, 100% recommended.

Amazing location in the heart of rural france, authentic french house with a fab garden, complete with chickens, ducks and of course, the peacock! We had the white room with its own terrace overlooking the garden and pool, it was a beautiful room, complete with four poster! Immaculately clean and characterful. What makes this place really outstanding is the warmth and friendliness of the hosts, John and Helen, and their charming daughters. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Breakfast was continental style, enhanced by the amazing home made jams..delicious! We loved it and definitely will return. Thank you so much for making our time so special. The whole experience was a delight.

Tranquil Country Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to La Rosarie, twice staying in at as a chambre d'hote, but this was our first time renting out the property where we stayed with our extended family. We love the charm of this place. It's in a very unspoiled rural area of France, yet we based ourselves there as many attractions are nearby- the Monkey park is just a short walk, and this year we visited Futuroscope too, and enjoyed lovely markets in the neighbouring towns. The bedrooms were very clean, comfortable and very spacious, and the bedroom on the ground floor was ideal for my elderly parents, who have problems with stairs. The kids loved the animals, and were constantly tormenting John (the owner, who lives in a separate annex on the property) to take them to feed the animals (thanks John!), and the highlight of each day was when they would go and collect the eggs, and some days, we even cooked some for our breakfast. We ate in local restaurants some nights, and also cooked at home other nights. The kitchen was well-equipped, and had everything we needed to cater for a family of 16. John's wife Helen left us some of her homemade jam, which was a lovely treat every morning, and we even bought some to bring home to Ireland with us. The swimming pool was a great addition, and some days we lazed around the pool while the kids jumped in and out, and other days we just went for a quick dip after a day of sightseeing. Some of the adults borrowed bikes some mornings and cycled to the little village for bread in the mornings. John and Helen told us to pick any produce from the garden (lots of fruit trees and vegetables). This was a nice bonus. We didn't see much of the owners as the accommodation is separate and they used a separate entrance, but yet they were always on hand if we needed to ask them a question or ask them how something worked, and they were very helpful.Overall, a lovely place to spend a few relaxing days in the French countryside.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this lovely review Niamh! It was great to meet all your family from young to old, and everyone seemed to enjoy their stay. Your parents seemed happy to sit quietly out on the terrace in the shade whilst the young ones made the most of the sunshine and the pool. Hoping to see you all again next year when all the jam has run out, although you bought so many jars it might take you a while to finish them all! We plan to get a female peacock soon as a mate for Severus, so the kids might be collecting peacock eggs next year! Special discount for returnees!

A little piece of heaven in France!

  • 5 of 5

I almost don't want to write this review because I want to keep this place to ourselves! What a wonderful discovery. We have been holidaying in France for many years in different places but we shall definitely come back to La Roseraie! There were 14 of us (extended family) and the house was a perfect size for larger groups, the rooms very spacious. The children LOVED the garden and disappeared for hours, feeding the animals, searching for hen eggs, making dens and of course swimming in the pool. My husband who took on cooking duties happily installed himself in the kitchen-dining room which is very spacious and with all the equipment needed to make delicious food. We moved things around a bit to suit us in the dining room but the owners said this was ok and were always available if we had questions or needed anything. I just loved taking my book and G and T and sitting at one of the many tables hidden around the garden and just relaxing. (I also discovered the secret hammock but I'm not telling where it is!) There are plenty of places to visit too - the monkey valley is a must and next time we shall go to Futuroscope. But what stays with me most is the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful place.

Rural Idyll ❤️

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from my second visit to La Roseraie and am planning to return next year. This visit was specifically to attend one of their yoga retreats ran by Helen who is a qualified instructor. Such a pleasant, tranquil place, perfect for meditation and contemplation and especially enjoyed yoga outside in the garden beneath the trees. My visit included home cooked fayre superbly made by Helen & John who are excellent chefs using produce from their extensive, lovely garden. My room was spacious, clean and comfortable with views across the surrounding fields. I enjoyed swimming in the lovely outdoor pool after our yoga sessions which is surrounded by trees affording privacy. I was lucky enough to help to feed some of their many animals which live around their garden and add to the character of this rural idyll. Although my trip this year was for three nights my husband and I stayed at La Roseraie for a full week last year. We found it a superb base for exploring this corner of rural France. There are many beautiful villages and towns around the area unspoiled by the tourist industry offering the visitor a glimpse of the real France. We visited the monkey sanctuary last year and we highly recommend it. I would like to add, after reading another review of La Roseraie, if you are the type of person who is unfamiliar with and uncomfortable in the countryside this destination may not be suitable but if you take pleasure and appreciate what a rural life entails you will fall in love with this little corner of France as we have!
