The Hermitage – A unique and utterly charming, luxurious retreat that allows you to explore Ventnor and the Isle of Wight at your leisure.

Boasting superb garden views of both the English Channel and St Boniface Down (the highest point on the island), this holiday apartment has everything you need for a relaxing stay in this beautiful Victorian seaside town. Photos of the fabulous views and sunsets can be viewed in the photo section. It is also the perfect base from which to explore the local area, including 2014 award winning Ventnor Beach, stunning woodland and hillside walks, hidden coves and a plethora of top quality restaurants, pubs, shops and other attractions. Not to mention the world famous Ventnor Botanic Gardens. The Ventnor Fringe Festival, sea safaris, sea fishing and bay fishing are also extremely popular. Whether it’s the height of summer or the depths of winter, there is always something happening in Ventnor! You can be as busy or relaxed as you like, in the comfortable security that you have a beautiful, apartment to return too.

Recently renovated and furnished to the highest standards in a vintage style by the current owner, The Hermitage occupies the entire lower ground floor of a former coastguard cottage and is a very short walk from the heart of the town. With a comfortable sitting/dining room, peaceful super-king double bedroom (also available as a twin room) well-equipped kitchen and beautiful bathroom incorporating a shower plus a large Jacuzzi spa bath, you will want for nothing. Should you wish to remain in touch with the outside world, radio, television and wifi are all available.

Access to the property is via steps down to the private walled courtyard to the front, which unfortunately means The Hermitage is not suitable for wheelchair users or the less mobile. To the rear, the South-West facing garden and veranda, with incredible views over the town to the sea, are also accessible by the owner although ultimate priority is given to guests. The rear garden is split into thirds, of which the first third (The Patio Herb Garden) is exclusively yours. Luxury bed linen and towels, plus beach towels and picnic paraphernalia are included at no extra charge.

About Lesley Brown

A Little Bit of History…

I have had an ongoing love affair for many years with the Isle of Wight in general and the vibrant, quirky and slightly bohemian ambience of Ventnor in particular. Eventually, in the summer of 2014, I could resist no longer and became the proud owner of Victoria Cottage, Ventnor. Forming part of an 1840’s row of coastguard cottages, which features in many Victorian Ventnor paintings and photographs, Victoria Cottage, as I re-named her, had been rather neglected in more recent times but, to me, her character still shone out from every corner.

With three storeys to work with, I set about creating my dream home, deciding along the way to incorporate an additional element, ‘The Hermitage’, a luxurious, self-contained holiday hideaway where others could come and stay to discover and enjoy all the magic of Ventnor which has so captivated me over the years. Her discreet, tucked-away location, makes her an appropriately named retreat.

What’s So Great about Ventnor…?

Despite a beguilingly tranquil ambience, The Hermitage is just a three-minute walk from central Ventnor with its array of restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes. In trademark style, Ventnor effortlessly mingles its enviable plethora of superior quality restaurants. From friendly, classic seaside establishments, easily catering for every palate and preference to very fine dining and bistro, Ventnor has become known as the food capital of the Island. This alluring mix extends out from the compact but eclectic shopping area right along the water frontage of Ventnor's iconic, blue-flag beach. Although it has enticed seasonal visitors in significant numbers for over a century, Ventnor also has a thriving and energetic non-tourist community so its businesses are open all year round, making it worthy of a visit at any time of year.

The Isle of Wight is renowned for its magnificent coastline, and this is easily accessible on foot from Ventnor seafront. A short walk towards the east quickly brings you to the picturesque village of Bonchurch and onwards, if you wish, through Luccombe to Shanklin. Alternatively, heading west takes you on an equally stunning coastal route to the uniquely idyllic enclave of Steephill Cove, where you might stop to savour the view and notable local restaurants or continue on to St Lawrence, Castle Haven Cove, Niton and, eventually, St Catherine's lighthouse. Whichever way you walk, you will find an abundance of wildlife and spectacular views.

What makes this apartment unique

Aptly, given her history, The Hermitage proudly boasts open views across the town rooftops to the ocean, and also, away to the right, takes in the magnificence of St Boniface Down, the highest point on the Island. Whilst the walk from The Hermitage to the town and sea is by no means flat, the views make the moderate effort well worthwhile. The Hermitage has her own walled courtyard to the front, ideal for morning coffee, along with independent access to the southwest-facing rear garden (with barbecue) and balcony, affectionately known as ‘The Champagne Deck’, with its fabulous sea views which perfectly complement a relaxing sundowner. The balcony and garden area are also accessible by myself, but ultimate priority is given to guests.

I have absolutely loved my stay at The Hermitage. I have felt totally relaxed and away from it all whilst here, and I don't want to go home!

Beautifully decked out with high quality fixtures and fittings. I have especially loved the bed and bedding, which meant I slept very well. The attention to detail and decoration is excellent throughout.

The Hermitage is very well situated and within easy walking distance of all the amenities. You must go to the Ale and Oyster, fab food! And in Perks you'll find a warm welcome and very reasonably priced drinks.

I can't wait to come back in March 2016 or my birthday weekend.

The Hermitage has been carefully furnished with the aim of combining a 'home from home' feel with an air of comfort and luxury. Occupying the entire lower ground floor, with private street access to the front and garden access to the rear, it incorporates a welcoming sitting room, soothingly decorated bedroom, well-equipped kitchen and beautiful bathroom with shower and large Jacuzzi spa bath. Naturally, the apartment is kept spotlessly clean and is embellished with special touches such as luxurious bedlinen, bathrobes, high-quality bath towels and separate beach towels. To further enhance your beach visits or walking plans, I have also provided a picnic basket with thermos and picnic rugs. For those who wish to remain in touch with the outside world during their Hermitage stay, complimentary wifi is, of course, included. Perfect host, location and accommodation

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend trip to the Isle of Wight, and will definitely be returning!

Accommodation: brilliantly decorated and romantic/cosy apartment with stunning views on the balcony. Equipped with everything you need to make your stay enjoyable, from a picnic bag and blanket to kitchen utensils and board games!

Host: Lesley is on hand for any questions or problems you have during the stay, as well as very good local knowledge of places to visit for the day and to eat/drink. From arriving we had a homemade tea in the oven, and were made to feel welcome throughout.

Location: plenty to see and do in Ventnor, including a walk down to the steep hill cove, seeing the views up Ventnor downs and taking a 30min drive to see the landmark attraction of the Needles Battery.

We will be back in 2018 for sure, very likely to become an annual family trip!

Lovely welcoming and comfortable stay

Lesley, the owner, met us and showed us around her beautifully decorated apartment, explaining things we needed to know in detail. She was a fountain of knowledge about the area, particularly when recommending places to eat!! There are some lovely restaurants within walking distance, particularly if you are a seafood lover. Nothing seemed too much trouble for her.

A plus point for me was the king size bed, which was extremely comfortable. Although ours was only a brief stay, we did manage to sit out in Lesley's beautifully kept and tendered garden with its stunning views. The camera certainly doesn't lie and it was every bit as lovely as the photos suggest. We were able to park right outside the property with no difficulty, but unless you want to go outside of Ventnor, you really don't need a car. Be prepared for hills though!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend "The Hermitage" for either a short or long stay.

Beautiful apartment, garden with stunning sea view

The Hermitage was everything we had hoped for and more... The apartment was beautiful, immaculate and the attention to detail really made the difference. Situated on a quiet road in the heart of Ventnor it was a 2 minute walk into the town and was the perfect starting point for some glorious coastal and countryside walks. After a fabulous day out a soak in the whirlpool bath was a great way to relax. Our host was really lovely, we felt very welcome and she gave us great advice on the best walks, pubs and restaurants in the area. It has to be said we had some great food, the IOW has such a lot to offer!! Places that stood out for us were the Cantina (great breakfast), the Bonchurch Inn where we had a stunning evening meal and a great pint in 'Perks' the local pub and all just a short walk from the apartment. The Hermitage was just perfect, the garden and views are beautiful and the IOW is a great place to go! We will definitely book again, thank you for a great holiday!

Gorgeous decor, luxury bed. Could not want for anything more. Charming Hostess. Highly recommend.

We arrived and " Hermie" was ready for us . We were greeted by Lesley who was so welcoming. She showed us around and left us to it , saying that she was at the other end of the phone if we needed her. Lesley lives upstairs and she really is so helpful but does not intrude. We could not have asked for more. The decor is so cute. The bed is truly comfortable which is so important when suffering with back problems. We wanted for nothing. Towels, robes, quality bedding, tea, coffee and local produce. I highly recommend this accommodation if visiting Ventnor. The restaurants are amazing. . We did not have one disappointing meal during our stay. We will return soon .

Ventnor is a town that defies comparison with most other seaside resorts in Britain, let alone those on the Isle of Wight. One cannot fail to be mesmerised by the remarkable vista of the downs and cliffs that buttress Ventnor to the north. Rising to nearly 800 feet, they are almost mountainous in elevation, and occasionally mist-capped just like real mountains. The effect is to turn the town into a giant amphitheater, opening out southward to sun and sea. The sea becomes the stage set and the rising terraces the seating galleries. It is this very unusual topography that impart Ventnor and the Undercliff's distinctive winter climate, one in which all manner of plants can be in bloom in the depths of winter and tiny lizards can be seen basking on south facing walls or rocks on a sunny December day.

If you prefer to be on the sea rather than admiring it from the land or the top of St Boniface Down, then sea safaris and mackerel fishing are available from Ocean Blue Quay at the Ventnor Haven

Perfect for first time 'fishers' who want to catch some fish for the BBQ! If you are more experienced, then fishing anywhere along the front at Ventnor will produce a catch, either side of the bay is good, but be careful as it is quite a snaggy venue. Plugging and spinning work well. Ventnor is a good area for Bass, Wrasse, and mackerel, plus rays.

Ventnor Park is a beauty and worth a visit. This is a beautiful spot to relax, listening to music, with a picnic. Bands play here at the traditional Victorian bandstand (that was salvaged from the long-gone pier) and a variety of acts play here throughout the summer at weekends. A little stream runs through the beautifully kept grounds and this is home to a friendly family of ducks (well fed by Ventnor residents). There is also an outdoor gym here, if you’ve over-indulged on the cream tea front. Plus there’s a great putting green and little café. In the summer, the Park also becomes part of the Ventnor Fringe festival, and is used for family fun and art shows.
