About the property

Crofts Mill, Ballater

Crofts Mill is the original Mill at Crofts Farm, the home farm for Glen Muick House.

Glen Muick is a beautiful 15 000hA estate on the Eastern Cairngorms between Balmoral and Glen Tanar.

Grouse, Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles, Osprey, Red Deer, Roe Deer, Otters and much much more are found in abundance on these estates.

The Mill is south facing with views south down Glen Muick to Lochnagar and The Coyles of Muick. North are views up Gairn Shiel and Morven.

Crofts Mill is a large solid traditional 18th Century Mill building over 3 floors and was restored in 2008. All the rooms are generously proportioned and no new window openings were required. All the original 2foot thick stonework has been kept with the original window and door openings used.

Enter into the large dining kitchen with a 6 seater dining table looking out onto 8foot wide patio doors, these lead out onto the patio with picnic table and benches.

The kitchen leads up to the sitting room with north and east facing windows and a southerly large 5' wide window which would have originally been the loading door the cart would have delivered the barley to the Mill. Leather sofas, 48" tv, dvd, denon hifi.

Upstairs are two double bedrooms both with ensuite.

Downstairs is a twin bedroom and utility room with freezer, tumble dryer, ironing board, internal clothes line, boiler and washing machine.

Comfortable and cosy

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely relaxing family holiday, complete with our dog, at Crofts Mill and left after a fortnight feeling thoroughly refreshed. Plenty to do and see in Ballater and the surrounding areas. Accommodation had everything we needed and we especially liked the limitless supply of hot water and the sumptuous deep bath in the master ensuite. Crisp cotton bed linen and fluffy towels were also appreciated. Patio doors opening out from the kitchen to the garden allowed for a very pleasant dining experience just about every day as the weather was so kind to us. We liked it so much we have already booked our next visit!

Spacious accommodation in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

There were some minor flaws but nothing important enough to detract from our overall delight with our stay. The barn next door was being renovated meaning some windows looked on to a building site. This will obviously be temporary and there was no troublesome noise. The furthest upstairs bedroom lacks wardrobes and the double bed is against the wall on one side.

These issues were more than compensated for by the general high quality of the mill. The sitting room is spacious and well furnished and the kitchen/dining room very well appointed. Everything you can think might be required is provided. Downstairs there is a clothes drying area as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The garden is well tended with an outdoor dining area and BBQ. The surrounding woodland was full of birdlife, we were lucky to have a pair of Redstart ten feet from our window. Loch Muick is a 20 minute drive away and of course Ballater is only two miles away. The new supermarket is well stocked, there are several restaurants including fine dining in the newly opened Rothesay Rooms.

In summary the Mill provides high quality accommodation in a rural setting with good access to the many attractions of Deeside.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 nights here over the February holidays.

The accommodation was immaculate and comfortable. The location was fantastic: peaceful and beautiful. Correspondence with Clare and Dan was quick and helpful. They were particularly kind to post back a child's jacket that we had left behind. Look forward to going again!

Lovely mill house in quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Lovely mill house in quiet location. Cosy and homely. Would love to visit again and would definitely recommend.

The Balmoral cairns walk is a lovely 3hr stroll through the estate forest visiting numerous 19th century cairns on the way.

Lovely well-equiped house in a very quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Very good location with a lot of good-quality equipment. Owners give a lot of advices for shopping and knowing the area. Very good spot to travel around (Cairgorms, Carthes Castle, Aberdeenshire...). Very quiet .. the only neighbours who made noises were the sheeps :-).

We spent a wonderful week there.
