Our house is in a village in East Sussex on the Ashdown Forest. We live in a beautiful late Victorian house (1898) with large garden in a quiet private road with off-road parking bordering a 36-hole golf course (on which you can freely walk) on the Ashdown Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But also the former hunting ground of Henry VIII. We are in the middle of Winnie the Pooh country. This area of England is called the Garden of England, for all its National Trust gardens, stately homes and private open gardens. We are near Wakehurst Place, part of the famous Kew Gardens and Standen (William Morris designs). It is just a 40 minute drive to visit the South Downs and walk the Seven Sisters (white cliffs) or see the old town of Lewes with its famous opera house Glyndebourne. All well worth a visit. The restored steam Blue Bell Railway is an 8 minute drive. The Seven Sisters (White Cliffs) coast is a 40 minute drive. If you like walking, two long distance footpaths cross our village and many other footpaths are around. We are on the cycling route connecting Paris to London. The train station is an 8 minute drive away. It takes 55 minutes by train to London Victoria or London Bridge station. Our friendly, vibrant village has two convenience stores, several health food stores, a biodynamic farm (opening for visiting and with a great farm shop), many coffeeshops and three pubs. All at walking distance. The golf, tennis, football and cricket clubs are within a 5 minute walk from our home.
There are ample country lanes for cycling the rolling hills of Sussex and we are on the Paris to London international cycling route. If you like walking then there are several long distance paths crossing our village and many public footpaths in the area.
We have a beautiful old house with a lot of atmosphere. We cook on an AGA, so the kitchen is always warm and cosy. Our garden is spacious with a small pond, trampoline, basketball net on the forecourt, south facing terrace, vegetable garden, greenhouse, rose arches, a 20 meter deep well (which has sufficient protection), a sandpit and direct access to the Ashdown Forest.
This property lends itself ideally to a large family gathering or holiday.
Please note, we only rent our house out for a minimum of 7 nights.
We are a continental European couple living in England since 1985. Our four children have flown the nest and we like travelling. Michael is retired, Henriette is an author and the founder of Reflections of my Friends. We have a beautiful old house with a lot of atmosphere right on the Ashdown Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We like gardening, singing, walking and cooking on the AGA. Please note, we only rent our house out for a minimum of 7 nights.
Henriette and Michael purchased this house in 1991
