About Nancy Reid and Bob McDowell

Hi! We’re Nancy Reid and Bob McDowell, your hosts at Villa Calista!

We hope you enjoy your stay at our home in Aspro, Crete and come to love the island as much as we do.

We live on the east coast of Canada, but spend most of the winter in our beloved Crete. We are both avid history buffs (Nancy is a retired Greco-Roman archaeologist), travelers, and animal lovers.

We are having the time of our lives exploring all Crete has to offer and we know you will too.

In the spirit of Greek philoxenia, we welcome you to our home!

Nancy Reid and Bob McDowell purchased this villa in 2014

Why Nancy Reid and Bob McDowell chose Chania area

We chose this property for our retirement home, as it has everything we were looking for - quiet privacy, comfort, and close to the amenities in the towns and villages. We love the peaceful setting of the sleepy old village of Aspro, but we also love the lively villages and towns of Almyrida and Kalyves close by. When we need a taste of nightlife or shopping, the city of Chania is less than a half hour away.

Our villa is perfect for those seeking a quiet, secluded place to stay while exploring the wonders of Crete. It's great for gentle hiking, cycling and exploring. Surrounded by lush olive orchards, you can enjoy the peacefulness of the Cretan countryside, where the tinkle of goat bells, bird song, or distant church chimes are the only sounds. Enjoy our gorgeous views of the Cretan Sea or the mountains from the terrace and balcony. Wander through our orchard garden, snooze in the hammock among the wildflowers, or plan your excursions from the comfort of our outdoor terrace. A Blue Flag beach is only 2 minutes away, with many others within a short drive. Shopping, dining, banking, nightlife are all to be had close by. From the villa, you can visit fascinating archaeological ruins, enjoy your pick of great tavernas and cafes, explore charming historic villages, or access some of the most famous beaches in Europe. Winery tours, cooking classes, sailing, biking, hiking, caving - are all options to consider when staying here. Then again, it's hard to resist lounging by our private pool!

What makes this villa unique

When our guests enter the Villa Calista, they are immediately drawn to the "avli" or covered terrace just off the kitchen, with its spectacular views of the Cretan Sea. and the magnificent mountain range. The avli is sheltered from the strong Cretan sun and is always kept cool by mountain breezes. It features large lounging areas along with a dining set for meals al fresco. The avli leads to our private pool and terrace with comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. Imagine yourself relaxing here with a cool drink after a full day of sight seeing!

Follow the stone path down to the lower olive orchard, where you'll find apricot, fig, orange and lemon trees, along with fragrant lavender and rosemary bushes. Depending on the season, there is an ever-changing assortment of colourful flowers. We've tucked the hammock down among the shady olive trees - a perfect place to steal a nap or read a book on a lazy afternoon!

Hikers and cyclists will love the many lanes and pathways in the area and our little village of Aspro itself is worth exploring for its fascinating remnants of Turkish architecture.

We love the location of the Villa Calista as it is perfect for making day-trips to the many wonderful historic villages and towns in the region - just 25 minutes from Chania; 45 minutes from Rethymnon; and about an hour and a half to the larger city of Heraklion and the amazing archaeological site of Knossos just beyond.

We're happy to help you plan your excursions and offer more information and lots more photos on our website. www.villacalista.com

Exceptional! 5/5 -
(15 traveller reviews)

Secluded comfort; 2-bed/bath villa, amazing views, pool, close to Almyrida beach
average rating of 5.0 based on 15 reviews

it was a 5 glorious day visit.

  • 5 of 5

I must say that my hosts outdid themselves to make my visit as wonderful as it was. Apart from a few hours of "liquid sunshine" (rain), the weather could not have been better. The villa was just perfect with all the mod cons. pool was great and I used it frequently.

The scenery around Villa Valista is breathtaking with mountains and the sea in plain view.

The villa's location is not far from a beautiful village when one can find many nice tavernas and mini marts. There is even an English butcher where I was able to get great meats.

For sure I'll plan to return and I unreservedly recommend it to any who want "to get away from it all".

Great views, quiet, well appointed with all the necessities for a self contained property

  • 5 of 5

Property exactly as described and shown on website. Excellent details on how to get there, how to operate all equipment on property. WiFi excellent. Beautiful views both of mountains and the sea. Away but close enough to nearby town of Almirida, where most restaurants and supermarkets located. Pool and outdoor areas fantastic for parents and our young girls. Indoors appointed well and comfortable. Surrounded by olive trees and only the goats would visit, so very private and quiet. Highly recommend this property, we really enjoyed our time here.

What could be improved, only minor stuff. Softer pillows would have been nice. We were also read the rules from the housekeeper and made to sign that we had understood them, kind of made us feel like school kids. Gardeners even though they were polite, came around from side passageway , straight into kitchen area to tell us they would be in garden - they should have knocked front door.

But these are only minor points for what is an excellent property and I am sure anyone who stays here will be extremely happy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for being such great guests. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay at Villa Calista. The list you were asked to verify on your arrival was to ensure you knew how things worked in the villa in detail - this is done more to protect you from causing inadvertent damage. We've never had to retain a damage deposit yet! Pillows are brand new each season, but next year we will make sure there are two options for people who prefer softer pillows and smaller pillows for the children. We really appreciate your feedback and hope you'll come again.

Fantastic view and lovely villa

  • 5 of 5

We (2 adults, kids aged 11 and 13) had a great stay in Villa Calista. The house, terrace, pool, garden etc. is well maintained and we felt "at home" right away. The view is absolutely stunning. The contact person, Shirley, was very friendly and recommended both restaurants and sightseeings. Sheets and towels were changed once during the week. Before arriving the correspondance with Nancy was very easy and she returned quickly on any questions that came up. Deposite was returned a few days after we left the house.

A recommendable place to stay.

Not enough superlatives for this place

  • 5 of 5

From the geckos on the hot stone walls to the hammock in the olive grove to the ethereal blue glow of the pool at night: this place was magical. So magical, in fact, that I left several articles of clothing there, to give myself a reason to return. (The clothes-leaving was, in fact, accidental--but the magic was real.) Thank you, Nancy, for making this place a home for others--and thank you for all the time you took answering my jittery, pre-trip questions. We really do hope to return, someday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words and for being such great guests! It was a pleasure to be your host and your pseudo tour guide. Can't wait to read your books. Love our shared interests in Crete, mythology, history and robust wines. I've found a friend.

A Villa Worth Killing For.

  • 5 of 5

Other reviews have summarized the more obvious attributes of Villa Calista: the orchards, the view, the pool (an absolute godsend after a hot day's hiking, a luminous alien bean of brightness at night). The well-appointed kitchen, the overall spotless maintenance. All of these accolades are well-deserved, and I will not waste your time repeating them here. Instead, I'll list a few of the less obvious features of the place:

1. Geckos. Adorable skittering lizards that you will never catch, and which are probably responsible for keeping the bug population down (at least, we were never plagued by insect bites).

2. The stars. We spent hours on the rooftop terrace, staring up at constellations you'll never see in the light-polluted environs most of you hail from. We even saw a UFO (either that or some kind of aerial dogfight in the stratosphere).

3. A hammock. Down in the olive grove. Holds two comfortably, assuming they're intimate. Once you get in, you'll never want to leave. Except to get into the pool.

4. Centuries-old ruins, visible from the terrace.

5. An alleged badger/family of weasels. We never saw them, although not for want of trying. Apparently they hang out just across the property line.

6. Goats. They wander by occasionally. They have strange, octopus-like eyes. They rock.

If none of these small wonders turn your crank, you can still luxuriate in what has to be the most relaxing, comfortable, and gorgeous hideaway I've been to in decades. We hope to return, sooner rather than later.

In fact, we briefly considered lying in wait for the next residents and killing them so we could have their slot.

Owner's Response: Aha! You have found our secret pleasures! On your next visit, you will have to meet Dimitris, the old shepherd. He's worth a whole book! Thanks for the lovely comments. Your family added colour and character to our Calista!

The perfect place for a Cretan holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely two week stay at Villa Calista and it certainly lives up to its name! The property is stunning: expansive view over Souda Bay and the White Mountains, a new (2015) pool, lovely landscaping including an olive grove, and an outdoor shaded terrace for relaxing or dining.

The house is modern, spotless clean, comfortable and has everything you need. Every room has large windows that open up facing the amazing view. Both bedrooms open up to a 2nd floor balcony. Since it gets very hot here the efficient, new air conditioners work beautifully. After a hot day exploring Crete it is a relief to come back and enjoy the cool villa. It is not a problem to turn them off while you're away, once turned on they cool things down quickly. Also, a refreshing dip in the pool and a spot in the shade is a perfect antidote to a long adventurous day!

The owners Bob and Nancy, have thought of every detail to make your stay comfortable. Upon arrival we were greeted with a welcome basket of goodies and some essentials including fresh local bread! They even left a Villa Calista beach bag for us on the bed. Shirley, the property manager, is a warm friendly host always available if you need anything or to answer questions.

The location of the villa is perfect. Secluded but close to the beaches, mountain villages, Chania, and other sites of interest.

We have rented several Homeaway properties in the past including Costa Rica, Grand Cayman, and the Florida keys. This was by far our best rental experience yet. Do not hesitate to book, you will not be disappointed!

The tiny village of Aspro is just on the outskirts of the beach resort town of Almyrida (2km).
