About Susan Brearley

Born in Dundee but spent my teens in Fife before spending a few years on the West Coast of Scotland before settling to buy Windrush now 21 years ago . My 4 children were all born here and enjoyed the open countryside along with a menagerie of animals like ponies , chickens , dog and cats ....with the two eldest girls fleeing the nest ( though just to St.Andrews University!) the two boys are very much into their outdoor sports and football trick shots. Sharing Windrush with just our friendly cats now along with the abundant wildlife we are blessed to enjoy ...buzzards, red deer , pheasants .......

Living just next door in the farmhouse I am on hand to welcome you here as well as deal with any issues right away ...though the Holiday cottage is not overlooked and is completely private.

Susan Brearley purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Susan Brearley chose Cupar

If you are looking for a stay in a spacious Scottish high quality traditional home with a modern twist with all modern conveniences the Windrush is the place to relax and feel at home. With so much to enjoy right here , wildlife, recreational area, large garden , walks , cycling etc you may not feel like venturing further . But , given that St. Andrews is a mere 10 mins drive away with the Golf , beautiful award winning beaches , restaurants and boutique shops there is always an excuse to go out . Plenty children's activities in nearby towns . Historical towns and fishing villages .... something for everyone .

What makes this cottage unique

The sheer tranquility and privacy is a major factor in our decision to stay here . The blackest of skies enables fantastic star gazing . In an enviable position ,the open fields around us paint a beautiful landscape view away from the hub of busy lives and allow for some freedom in our recreational area for guests to practice their golf swing ( plans are under way to transform the area into a 3 hole course ) or grab a football and have a kick around with the kids , safe knowing they are not near a road . Best of all is that we can have the best of both worlds as Windrush is not far from the local villages , towns and even major cities to enjoy all that they offer too.

Self-catering at its best!

  • 5 of 5

Spacious, extremely-well appointed cottage with great attention to detail, in the heart of some lovely countryside, . Weather was a bit iffy but the cottage had everything we could need - even an X-Box and Wii for those of us who haven't grown up yet! Susan was very friendly and helpful, and the Welcome Pack was a nice bonus. Warm and well-lit, with a collection of DVDs, books, games, and magazines, this is a great place to get away. Thoroughly recommended.

Wonderful relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a fantastic week here recently with our 2 dogs. Susan, the proprietor met us on arrival and showed us around the property. Susan was friendly, approachable and made us feel very welcome.

We loved the peace and tranquillity of the cottage. The cottage was extremely comfortable and had everything we could wish for. The log burner was amazing and used to full effect.

We would highly recommend a stay at Windrush Cottage.

A superb autumn holiday

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we were made welcome in this delightful cottage. The welcome food pack and guided tour of the cottage were much appreciated, but then after that Susan left us alone ,but we knew she was nearby should we have any problems. The cottage is warm, comfortable and blissfully quiet and for us very dog friendly. All our needs were catered for. We frequently stay in cottages , often 5 star and certainly this one is very well equipped.. including an X box and wii , which my huband and I had a great laugh having a go at ! Nearby Ceres is gorgeous and has butchers , a Spa shop, dog friendly cafe and pubs.. Lots to see and do in the area and also several farmshops selling lovely produce too, if you prefer to eat in. We saw deer in the next field within an hour of arriving, This truly is a special place, I am sure we will be back.

Paradise for Kids and dogs, makes for happy holiday.

  • 5 of 5

This house was fabulous, we were met by Susan on arrival who was very welcoming and gave us details of a few things that may interest the kids, so glad about that we went to the Muddy place and the kids had a ball, and we had a ball too. The house itself is fantastic and I cannot think of one thing that I would recommend to improve the stay. Susan and family live next to the cottage but were never intrusive, but advised that if anything was needed just to pop next door. Thanks for a great stay.

Adorable cabin in the countryside

  • 5 of 5

Lovely stay with lovely host. And sheep everywhere. Cozy with great heating system and nice hot water. Beautiful vistas and all the conveniences of home. St. Andrews Taxi service will come fetch you and bring you into town. Plenty of space. And very close to one of Scotland's best Michelin Star restaurants The Peat Inn.

Say hello to the neighbouring lambs and Highland cattle , and perhaps be lucky to spy some deer and pheasants in the garden too. Uninterrupted views across rolling countryside . Lovely self contained garden with patio area with access to field to play ball games or practice your golf swing . Lovely country walks and cycle routes close by along with country pursuits like shooting, horse-riding , water sports and off road driving .

Near to the picturesque village of Ceres and only 7 miles from St. Andrews, the home of golf, Windrush Holiday Cottage is an ideal central base from which to explore not only Fife's delightful towns and coastlines but is within a 25 minute drive to Dundee and Perth and a hop over the Forth bridge to Edinburgh takes a mere 45 minutes. Explore the coastline of hundreds of miles of cycle and walking paths taking in the pretty harbour villages of Elie, Pittenween , Anstruther and Crail and award winnng blue flag beaches.

Fife boasts a wealth of visitor attractions.

Bird enthusiasts can take a short boat trip out to the Isle of May, where you will find a nature reserve where puffins, crags, and many more sea birds can be found. Seals are seen regularly lying on the rocks around the island and if you are lucky you may even spot dolphins or whales.

The East Neuk and surrounding area provides many hidden surprises for visitors, with it's numerous sandy beaches and rock pools that will have children entertained for hours, historical churches and buildings, quaint wynds to meander down and harbours with working fishing boats, there is something which will appeal to everyone. Swimming and other sports can be enjoyed at many centres.

Fife boasts five of Scotland's six 'Blue Flag Beaches' and plenty of other award winning beaches as well.

Other pusuits include watersports, clay pigeon shooting, Scotland's secret bunker, Scottish Deer Centre, soft play centres, Knockhill raceway , aquariums in St. Andrews and North Queensferry , botanic gardens, art and craft galleries etc.

Award winning restaurants only 5 minutes drive but casual coffee shops ( Coffee & Kilts highly recommended ) and pubs can be enjoyed in Ceres & Cupar - The Ceres Inn having great food and a beer garden as well as some fantastic nights entertainment.

Fife Millenium Cycleways

The Cycle Ways offer something for everyone. For the committed tourer, the 105 mile Kingdom Route is a circuit between the Forth and Tay road bridges. There are smaller regional networks in West Fife - including an 8.5 mile off-road section along a disused railway line with links into Devilla Forest - circular routes in the picturesque Howe of Fife, and more being developed in the East Neuk south of St Andrews. As well as Devilla, there are off-road routes in Blairadam, Pitmedden and Tentsmuir Forests, and urban networks in Fife's main towns.

A series of detailed maps featuring each of the routes is available from Tourist Information Centres and other outlets.

The world famous Golfing Old Course , hosting the Open championship this year , and the British Golf museum in St Andrews will be a must see for the keen golfer but with over 70 golf courses within reach, including the recently restored Hickory Golf course at Hill of Tarvit only a mile from Ceres, you will be spoiled for choice.

Ceres itself is steeped in history and boasts the Fife Folk Museum and national trust Hill of Tarvit mansion house however a short drive finds you the delights of St. Andrews Cathedral , Falkland Palace , Glamis Palace , Scone Palace , Stirling Castle and our capital's most famous landmark Edinburgh Castle itself. Nearby Dundee has HMS Discovery and Jute museums and is currently have it's own V&A design museum built.

The local village hosts the oldest Highland Games on the last Saturday of June every year and entry is free to this outstanding Scottish event . The brave men of Ceres were rewarded with this honour after their help at the Battle of Bannockburn from Robert the Bruce. Other local highland Games are held nearby in St. Andrews and Cupar in the summer months also.

This area of Scotland is famous for the delicious soft fruits in summer and early autumn and no visit would be complete without sampling some raspberries , strawberries or the unique 'Tayberry'. Just 6 miles away is Cairnie Fruit farm with it's famous mega maze and childrens play areas and splendid tea room where you can 'pick your own' or just indulge in some cream strawberry scones ...mmm mmmm .'Muddy Boots' also offers locally sourced produce and a fun area for kids with delicious food for all.

There are local farmer's markets in both local towns Cupar and St. Andrews offering the best of local produce including Scottish wines , cheeses and meats.

The famous Wemyss pottery visitor centre is situated next to the Village church in Ceres where you can browse the colourful cats and other unique ornamental gifts.
