Although not one of the more well-known dales, Dentdale’s reputation for being one of the loveliest is guarded by those in the know, to ensure it preserves its stillness and beauty. It is a farming community with scattered homesteads following settlement patterns dating back to Viking times but the smallness of the dale allows for such diverse landscapes, from the open windswept country of the fells and tumbling brooks, through to the wildflower rich hay meadows and riverside pastures, to be accessible within short walks of each other, and directly from the cottage.

For walkers, the Dales Way long distance path runs along the length of the valley, and the Three Peaks and Pennine Way are easily accessible (the cottage looks out onto the lower slopes of Whernside); numerous other routes will provide endless ideas. There are lots of other outdoor activities to enjoy including two national cycle ways which pass through Dentdale.

The area is one of the most important in the United Kingdom for its rich and diverse flora and fauna and is home to a wide range of species, many of which are rare or scarce nationally. The cottage lies two and a half miles east (a pleasing walk along the River Dee) from the village of Dent, with its delightful cobbled streets, village store, two tearooms, two pubs, craft studio and heritage centre. East of the cottage, the valley winds its way through Cowgill, on its way to Dent station, under five miles from the village. Dent is the highest railway station in Britain, on the famous Carlisle to Settle Railway and a ride on the line can take you to Carlisle or Leeds with amazing scenery en-route. Between the cottage and Dent Station lies one of the most remote breweries in Britain – The Dent Brewery, brewers of award winning ales that can be bought in any of the three pubs in Dentdale.

Further afield are other beautiful dales and picturesque towns with colourful histories, such as Sedbergh (eight miles), the book town of England, at the foot of the Howgills or, in an easterly direction, Hawes (ten miles) in Wensleydale. Dentdale's position in the West of the Yorkshire Dales allows for easy visits to the Lake District, just twenty miles away.
