Good location, can you fit in with the locals?

  • 4 of 5

This well-located property is in a street just inside the Venetian city walls. Everywhere within Heraklion city centre is within an easy and enjoyable walk. This is where you should be if you want to experience living in a city several thousand years old. Be aware that many of the streets are not suitable for modern vehicles and large parts of the city centre are (thankfully) pedestrianised. The alleys off this "street" can only be accessed on foot which makes this a cut-through (just) for cars and (more sensibly) for motorbikes. Within the flat none of this will bother you but if you have a hire car you will be disadvantaged. There is no public parking except the streets and brown field sites where you will pay. There is one at the beginning of the street. Pay your fees each day (£5), explain when you want your car and they will advise on where to park. After we damaged our hire car (a 4WD truck, yes really!) trying to get up the street to the flat, we parked it and wheeled our baggage up the street. Don't take heavy bags, you will need to lift them up a staircase to the first floor flat. This is not an affluent area, many of the properties are derelict and grafitti is everywhere. We experienced no personal security issues in these alleyways. The two rooms of the flat have stone walls which insulate against noise and heat. Air conditioning in the main room is invaluable. The fourth wall is largely single glazed windows and shutters for privacy and protection against the sun. Noise streams in and out of these (Heraklion centre is under the flight path). This and surrounding properties occupy segments of the open space between them. In the southern mediterranean, people (and their dogs) spend mornings/evenings outside or inside with their doors and windows open. If you are not ready for this, go and lock yourself away in a hotel bedroom somewhere. At night the higher you can get, the more chance of a breeze. Above the kitchen/bathroom there is a table and chairs, great when the sun goes down but if there is a tremor, you'll wonder whether being so high was sensible! Everything works (immersion heater for hot water, wireless internet router, oven etc) so long as someone in the flat below remembers to turn on the pump for your water supply! We enjoyed some great meals from the kitchen (suggestion for improvement: a chopping board). This is a place for travellers interested in experiencing, for a time, life as the locals live it. Enjoy!

Authentic Cretan Apartment

  • 4 of 5

We were two and stayed here for a week in October 2016.

From the street there is a lockable front door which leads to a small private courtyard with many plants in pots. The apartment is on the first floor and is reached by a flight of stone steps - when we stayed the lower apartment was occupied by a family member of Manolis and Evi. At the top of the steps is a small balcony with entrance to the living room and bedroom on the right, the kitchen and bathroom on the left. Further along the balcony is a spiral staircase to the roof terrace.

The living area is very well decorated with its stone feature walls and has all necessary mod-cons, air-con, wi-fi, and TV, etc. The bedroom is well sized with plenty of wardrobe space and a very comfortable bed.

The kitchen and bathroom are opposite the living area which means going outside to use these facilities. We didn’t find this to be a problem. The area is well lit at night with a light operated from the living room. The kitchen and bathroom are small but they are both manageable.

We used the roof terrace a few times to relax in the sun with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine after a day’s sightseeing.

The apartment is very well placed near the centre of Heraklion with most places being less than half an hour’s walk away. Eleftherias Square with its restaurants and cafes is about 10 minutes away, the Archaeological Museum is here too. The bus station is about 20 minutes walk away, and buses to Knossos and other major towns run frequently from here. The Venetian Walls are about 5 minutes away and the Venetian Fortress about 25 minutes.

Manolis and Evi are excellent hosts, Manolis picked us up from the airport when we arrived in Crete. They are both very helpful and Manolis responds quickly to emails.

Only Made for Two

  • 4 of 5

Manolis was a very gracious host and picked us up at the bus station. The stone apartment is very quaint and has a very traditional feel. The property is located very close to the city center and all amenities. Best place for coffee is Coffee Island on the corner of Pediados and Evans. The property bathroom and kitchen is separate from the bedroom/living room section of the apartment. It seemed very quaint at the time but the all night rain made walking to the bathroom in the rain very inconvenient. Kitchen items are very sparse and the sofa bed is not suitable for adults. Manolis lives 15 kilometers from the apartment so if you need something you wait until the next day.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, thank you for taking the time to post your feedback from your recent stay. Its a self catering accommodation and we had provided the essentials for your 2 days short stay. It is clear at the description that the bath room and the kitchen is opposite the entrance of the apartment. The kitchen is fully equipped for 3 persons and everything is brand new. Sofa bed in the living room is a new double sofa convertible to a double bed, suitable for all ages.

gemütliche Ferienwohnung mit kleiner Dachterrasse in Iraklions Altstadt

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

A recommander !

small, clean appartment; central location

  • 3 of 5

We stayed here for 4 nights in aug 2016.

It is a clean and complete appartment in the old centre of Heraklion. A 5-10 min walk to the atmospheric centre!

Instead of the description on this website there was only 1 bedroom with a 2 person bed (website says '2 bedrooms'!). The second bed is a 2 person 'sleep couch' in the living room which is not that big you can leave the bed as it is at daytime.

As descriped the appartment is equiped with all neccesary things as Wifi, airco, kitchen armature etc. To reach the kitchen and bathroom (also toilet at night) you have to go outside. Not a big deal for us but good to know. There is a very small balcony you can only reach by a narrow staircase (not suited for children). As you are in the centre of Heraklion the views are only tops of houses and chimneys: not a beautiful view.

The owner was very kind and helpfull with practical advise. He met our appointments correctly.

For the ones who do rent a car (we did only 2 days before leaving Heraklion) parking is a problem especially during evening when all residents come home. When you park at the paid parking place: make clear when you want to leave the parking because otherwise they park other cars behind yours!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback from your recent stay. However, we would like to remind you that it is clear in the description!!! that is one bedroom apartment with terrace and that the bath room and the kitchen is opposite the entrance of the apartment. Guests who are reserving Heraklion apartments have other interests, to visit Museums, Archaeological Sites, the culture of the town, etc, and not to be at the terrace and looking at the chimneys. There is a big public parking place, free of charge, just 100 meters from the house, where you always find parking place available. I feel sorry that you did not find it.
