Declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2002 for its architectural and artistic, Ragusa has actually Neolithic origins, with the first settlements dated XX century. c. Seventh common for inhabitants of Sicily, with its Mediterranean climate, is located 502 meters. above sea level and is the capital of the province to the south of Italy. Renowned venue for important examples of Baroque art in the district of Ibla, Ragusa in 1693 was completely destroyed by a devastating earthquake that hit the whole Val di Noto. Rebuilt in the thirteenth century, it was divided into two districts, higher plateau Ibleo Ragusa and Ragusa, built on the ruins of a medieval structure. The origins of its name, probably Byzantine Ragous, Rogos, who intended to mean barn, wealth and agricultural land in the area, became Ragus or Rakkusa during Arab rule, turned into Ragusia in Norman times Aragonese. According to other sources the etymology derives from the transformation of the greek, Heraea in Heresium then became a Reusium, Reusia, Rakkusa under the Arabs, and the final Ragusia Ragusa.
