My name is TRUE. Thank you for your interest in our home, MACON MANOR, which is celebrating its 126th year (1889-2015) on our quiet, tree-lined street in the heart of the beautiful, safe, and culturally vibrant Stuyvesant Heights Historic District in Brooklyn, which GQ Magazine has rightfully called “The Coolest City on the Planet.” We're about a 5-minute walk from the Utica subway station on the “A” (Express) and 'C' (Local) line; the “A” connects you to Downtown Brooklyn / Brooklyn Bridge (about 10 minutes), Downtown Manhattan / Ground Zero (about 12 minutes), JFK (about 20 minutes) Penn Station / Amtrak (about 25 minutes), Port Authority Bus Terminal (under 30 minutes), Times Square / Broadway (under 30 minutes), and Central Park / Lincoln Center (about 35 minutes). There is no off-street parking, but street parking is free, safe, and fairly easy to get right out front.

We are easily accessible via car and several forms of public transportation. Many of Brooklyn’s hottest neighborhoods (Brooklyn Heights [and the Watchtower Facility], Bushwick, DUMBO, Fort Greene [and Barclays Center], Park Slope [and Prospect Park], Williamsburg, etc.) are within 5-15 minutes. JFK and LaGuardia are both within 25 minutes by car, and accessible via public transport. We are just a 1- or 2-minute walk from the best the Neighborhood has to offer (bars, boutiques, cafés, galleries, restaurants — such as Zagat-rated Peaches and Saraghina — and much more).

Yes, you can live like a real Brooklynite in this sunny & spacious Apartment, furnished with the IKEA furniture that you know & love. It is air-conditioned in the summer and well heated in the winter. Free Wi-Fi; original details and hardwood floors throughout. Ideal for large families, groups of friends, and individuals / couples who like a lot of space; it can sleep up to (8) (suggested maximum) or (10) (absolute maximum).

It features:

• A Master Bedroom: (1) queen-size bed with a quality mattress (sleeps 2) (up to [2] more people can be accommodated on an inflatable queen-size Aerobed air mattress for $49 per person per night); sheets, pillows with cases, blankets and comforters; A/C; closet; alarm clock; (2) reading lamps; steam iron & board; full-length mirror; original art; (2) windows overlooking the Garden.

• A 2nd Bedroom: Bunk bed with (2) full-size beds (each sleeps 2); and 2nd closet; floor lamp.

• A Living Room: (1) full-size sofa bed (sleeps 2) (up to [2] more people can be accommodated on an inflatable queen-size Aerobed air mattress for $49 per person per night); a sofa; a fold-away dining table & chairs for (6); a 2nd A/C; a flat screen HDTV with cable (including premium channels such as HBO / Showtime / Starz on Demand, which allows you to watch any movie or program they offer — Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, Girls, Sex in the City, The Sopranos, True Blood, The Walking Dead — whenever you like; there is also a cable channel for video games titles such as “Bejeweled 2,” “Diner Dash,” “Mummy Maze,” “Sudoku,” and others); a BluRay player with library of DVDs for kids & adults; a bookshelf with books & games for kids & adults, including guide books to NYC / Brooklyn; 3rd closet; hot & cold drinking water dispenser; floor / reading lamp; original art.

• A fully-equipped Eat-In-Kitchen: A full-size refrigerator / freezer; gas oven / stove; microwave; coffee maker & grinder; toaster; blender; cooking utensils, dishes, silverware; foldaway wall-mounted table & (2) stools; complimentary coffee / tea / bottled water.

* If you find a Vacation Rental website anywhere in the World that we conclude offers more information than our site (any combination of information regarding a single property and the resources and / or history of the area in which it is located, or local tourism and shopping suggestions, for example), we will reduce the cost of a (3) or more night stay by (1) night.

About Kayla

My name is Kayla. I am an Actor and Teaching Artist. I have been the Operator and On-Site Manager of MACON MANOR since 2016. I moved to New York because of its vibrant arts life, culture and history. After studying theatre and teaching around the country, I wanted to belong to an artist community devoted to the best work in the world.

TRUE, is an Artist / Designer / Filmmaker, and has been the Owner / Operator of MACON MANOR since purchasing the Home in 1999.

TRUE moved from Los Angeles, CA. to New York to be a part of its vibrant culture (and to study at Sarah Lawrence College and The Cooper Union Art School) and then moved from Manhattan to Stuyvesant Heights because he found it to be much quieter and safer than living in Manhattan.

Kayla purchased this apartment in 1999

Why Kayla chose Bedford-Stuyvesant

TRUE purchased MACON MANOR because it offered exactly what he wanted – a Home with all the benefits of living in NYC without the less pleasant aspects of living in Manhattan, primarily: Apartments with much more space; a Block that is much quieter and safer; and a Neighborhood with a much greater sense of Community, in which we actually know our Neighbors and the Owners of the local businesses. All this just a 5-minute walk from an express train that can get you into Manhattan in just 12 minutes!

Manhattan is the most amazing place on the Planet – but it’s a really, really good thing to be able to retreat from its hustle and bustle at the end of the day, to go someplace where you can actually sleep through the night.

What makes this apartment unique

The Homes in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District were built for the wealthiest people of the day in the late 1800s, when everything else in the area was undeveloped farmland. Throughout the course of the 20th century – as public transportation made it easier for the working class to get deeper into Brooklyn – the wealthy fled, and their Homes transitioned into the hands of the middle-class.

Living in one such Home, and having the chance to lovingly restore it and share it with Travelers from around the World is a very unique opportunity, one that we cherish.

Wonderful stay in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

My wife, her daughter and I stayed at Macon Manor for four days in September 17-21, 2008. We were looking for an apartment in New York for a short family vacation after the WYSTC 2008 Conference and we found Macon Manor in Brooklyn to be the perfect place.

The whole Bedford Stuyvesant area is lovely, especially around Macon Street with all the treed streets and nice brownstone buildings. People are very friendly and much more polite than in London or Paris. The 5-minute walk to and from the Utica Ave subway station, through Fulton Park, is very nice, and my wife was telling me "I felt safer than in the métro in Paris".

True (the apartment owner) recommended the nearby café (Bread Stuy) and restaurant (Peaches Brooklyn), where we had excellent breakfasts and a great dinner on our last evening. Peaches does not have a liquor licence so they sent us to a little wine store a block away, where I found a very good rosé Rioja that went very well with our pork and beef ribs (both cooked to perfection). The service was great, performed by the ever smiling staff.

I highly recommend Macon Manor, very well maintained and nicely furnished by True, who also thought of filling up the fridge with water bottles, and the kitchen with coffee and tea, all very much appreciated on arrival and during our stay (like the numerous books in the living room that taught us the history of the Brooklyn bridge and helped us plan our visits).

The apartment was much better than others we rented in the US or in other countries, and next time I or my family go to New York for work or for a holiday, we'll return to Macon Manor for sure. We'll just book the 3rd floor apartment for a change next time.

Staying at Macon Manor in Brooklyn is a great and much cheaper alternative to any hotel or apartment rental in Manhattan. It gives an easy, safe and fast access to all New York tourist attractions and business districts, while offering the unique and original character of the Bedford Stuyvesant area in Brooklyn.

Staying at Macon Manor was great! Like the description, it was close to the subway station and plenty of stores and places to eat nearby. We made ourselves right at home!

Totally recommendable. Travel to downtown Manhatten takes a bit of time but the price is makes up for this.

Clean, old character, handy to NYC

  • 4 of 5

First impressions count, and the first impression was a quaint, charming, older property. Once we'd stayed a few days, the minor flaws began to show. A tiny kitchenette with aging , worn particleboard benches but everything worked. Shower had inconsistent hot water, either scalding hot or too cold, and a shower head fixed by string! These are however minor issues. The property is a 7ish minute walk to the subway for easy access to Manhattan and other sights. Didn't get to meet the hosts but spoke to them and they seemed really nice. Comfy beds, TV, full sized fridge . Overall a decent spot for the money.

Good Stay in Brooklyn

  • 3 of 5

Prior to our arrival, True provided a good deal of information with regard to the apartment and NYC. This was much appreciated. The apartment was clean and comfortable. It was a short walking distance to the subway station, delis/markets and restaurants. Our family had a great time in NYC, with a pleasant place to stay in Brooklyn.

Built in 1889, MACON MANOR is located on Macon Street in the heart of the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District of Brooklyn, New York.

As you may have read in such publications as New York Magazine, the New York Times, and Time Out New York (among many others), Stuyvesant Heights – and the larger working-class Community of Bedford that are commonly referred to as “Bedford-Stuyvesant” or “Bed-Stuy,” known worldwide for their magnificent architecture, rich history, green blocks, flourishing Community Gardens, and as home to countless significant cultural figures – are in the flowering of a new cultural and commercial renaissance (we have a growing collection of books discussing this history which we keep in each Apartment).

Bars, boutiques, cafés, galleries, restaurants, and shops are popping up faster than one can keep up with, and there is an influx of new residents who are turning this historically Black, family-oriented Community into a truly diverse enclave of progressive people of all backgrounds (for example, in the decade between 2000 and 2010, the white population surged 633%).

Despite this tremendous transformation, however, it maintains a charm that can be experienced by strolling down one of its many quiet, safe, leafy, beautiful blocks.

In addition to those activities listed above, our Community also hosts: Art Shows, Chess Tournaments, Farmer's Market, Garden Parties, Live Music, Outdoor Film Screenings, Parades, Poetry Readings, Street Festivals, Wine Tastings, and much more.
