What a hidden gem! We rented the whole house for a family holiday - 11 people. There was so much space in the house, with all rooms ensuite and everything clean and well kept. Indoor and outdoor eating areas and a large garden. The house can be split in two separate dwellings for smaller groups.
It is nestled between the mountains and the coast in a collection of small villages. Very peaceful indeed (except for a few mooing cows!). There were a mixture of Spanish tourists and pilgrims to Santiago when we visited giving it that unspoiled feel. Only a few kms from the great beach and small town of Comillas and of plenty of places to explore; Picos mountains, Oyambre golf and enormous beach. We didn't get a chance to see the nearby prehistoric caves or other beaches, and would love to come back to explore more. Richard and Carmen live next door and are wonderful hosts because they have all the knowledge and advice if required, but are not intrusive at all.
Thank you Richard and Carmen, and we can't recommend it enough!
We rented the whole property and enjoyed a truly relaxing stay. The garden was large and peaceful with lovely views and there are various seating areas, including a large 'garden room' which was useful once when the wind blew us away from the outdoor table! Carmen and Richard were excellent hosts, they left us alone but were full of useful information when asked and Richard even dug out a bicycle when he heard my husband likes cycling! The house is simply furnished in a rustic style, the kitchens are perfectly adequate for a holiday stay and the lady who comes every morning in her bread van was most welcome!
Nearby Comillias is very pretty and Oyambre beach is truly beautiful. It's a wonderful area and we really loved it. The property is great for 2 families/parties to share and we would thoroughly recommend it.
The house is just as described.
It is roomy, peaceful and beautiful with lots of character.
Carmen and Richard are great hosts without being intrusive - they were so kind to us and our 2 girls.
There is heaps to explore once you get to Ruilobuca- beaches, the Picos, Altamira as well as an abundance of charming villages with great restaurants.
I'm sure we'll be back, now we have discovered what a gem Cantabria is!
This is a great combination for a couple of families. I stayed here with my husband, parents and sister, with her husband and two daughters, renting both properties, which worked really well.
Having access to two kitchens and all their contents made it really simple for self-catering for 8 people, and great not having to share bathrooms. Everything worked too.
Since we were renting both houses, we also had access to the whole garden area, lovely for eating all our meals together outside with a fantastic view. We also had access to the barn, which would have been useful if we had had to eat undercover.
I could see it working well for a smaller group renting a single property - my recommendation would be to rent the north half because it has the best view.
Parking space was ample for the two cars we had and would accommodate more if needed.
The restaurant at El Barrio de la Iglesia is walkable - about 15 minutes -and worth the walk if you fancy a night off cooking and not driving. There are a couple of useful supermarkets in Comillas, and a couple of great ladies deliver bread each morning by van to the door.
The beach in Comillas is definitely worth a visit, but the really special one is Oyambra, one of the best beaches I've been to, surf at one end with easy access to some restaurants for lunch, and a safe tranquil channel for swimming at the other. The Picos are also unmissable, particularly the cable car at Fuente De; Santilla del Mar is another lovely place to visit.
Carmen is a great host, available and responsive but in no way intrusive.
We were two families and rent both parts of the house. It was great there. We had enough rooms and we loved to stay in Ruilobuca. There was a big kitchen which was best equipped, a washing maschine and a beautiful garden. Everthing was clean and we missed nothing. The owners Carmen and Richard were very friendly and helpful. They always gave us useful information about restaurants, sightseeing - trips, beaches .... We often went to the sea or hiked in the mountains. There were nice places to vistit very near (Comillas, Santander). The weather was fine and we enjoyed our stay very much.
We spent a lovely three weeks last summer at Ruilobuca. As we are a family of six, we rented the full house, and we found it extremely roomy and comfortable. Our kids loved the stonewalled bedrooms and the wooden ceilings. For them, it was like a magic house. The house has a beautiful garden with lovely views. It feels like in the middle of nowhere, so calm and quiet, but still we were a mere ten minutes away drive from the historic village of Comillas. Weather was generally sunny and good so we mostly stayed outside, and there was also a big porch for family meals and a barbecue.
The property is very well equipped and very well situated to see the area, mountains and beaches. Carmen and Richard were very helpful and were always ready to answer questions about local attractions. Comillas and Santillana del Mar (a beautiful village from the Middle Ages) are a must, but we also visited San Vicente de la Barquera and the Cueva del Soplado (a cave with amazing stalactites). We also went to the beautiful city of Santander, which is an hour away by the highway.
We had a perfect holiday at Ruilobuca and we will definitely be going back!
Ruilobuca is part of Ruiloba distric. The village is a very quiet hamlet and part or rural Spain, is where one can still feel back to simpler days. Surrounded by the most historic and elegant cities of the Northern Coast, COMILLAS is about two miles from the house. July and August is a busy market town with nationals holiday makers. Little shops, antiques, bars, restaurants and magnificent buildings, and of course a lovely beach. SANTILLANA DEL MAR has its famous CAVES and buildings. Santander is about 30 minutes from the house. OYAMBRE PARK has a magnificent silver sand and green dunes spreading over kilometres of coast. LA RUTA DEL CARES in Asturias, is another energetic walk of 25 kms go and back in one go!!
LOS PICOS DE EUROPA is about 40 minutes by car from the house and is famous for its walks and gastronomy.
WALKS AND GASTRONOMY are the most popular activities in the area. Menus of three courses are available from 7 Euros every where!
Other Activities: A full size tennis table and bikes are available in the house. Painting activities are most welcome and suitable, just to learn or practice.
Golf: Campo de Golf Santa Marina, 18 holes, in San Vicente de la Barquera, (twenty minutes from our house), was created in 2001 by Severiano Ballesteros. It is famous amongst nationals and foreign players.
A coastal 9 holes golf course in Oyambre Park is only 15 minutes from the house.
