About The Owner

Bob and I lived in Chelsea and worked in Manhattan when we became weekenders in Westbrook. Bob, an architect and sculptor, designed and built an artist's studio for himself which was completed in 2003. Since retiring and moving to Westbrook year round, we rebuilt the main house while we lived in the studio. It was such a unique experience that we decided to share the studio with guests during the warmer months of the year (May - November). It's been great fun for us, and we have enjoyed sharing it with visitors from all over the world. Our visitors have enriched our lives as well as theirs!

The Owner purchased this house in 1996

Why The Owner chose Westbrook

We were looking for a location on a salt marsh where 'life begins'. The five acres provided a place where Bob could pursue his passion for sculpting outdoors and Ilsa, an avid cook, could pursue her passion and grow our own produce. The site provided space for almost everything that we could dream of. We built a 75' by 5' raised bed vegetable garden and an artist's studio. An open meadow is the home of sculptures and wildflowers. This is truly a place to live with nature...but we do miss Manhattan!

Westbrook Artist Studio a Delight

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this delightful riverside retreat thanks to our gracious hosts Bob, Ilsa and Tilda the sweet Lab mix. We enjoyed the stay and would highly recommend it. It is a birder's paradise along the Patchouge River. It is a beautiful spot overlooking the river and salt marsh. The place has a real zen quality to it and is bound to leave you as happy and rested as it did us.

A Treasure Close To Home

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the marsh studio was truly a wonderful experience . . . one of our best vacations ever! We arrived in the rain and were so captivated by the contemporary design, sculptures and various works of art that we soon forgot about the rain. Ilsa and Bob are wonderful hosts. A bottle of wine, orange juice and the makings for coffee were very much appreciated. Their dog, Tilda, (a lab/something?? mix) was a fine greeter . . . energetic and loving and an added bonus for us.

We decided to stay local this summer and were amazed at all there was to do in the Westbrook area. We saw a great concert at the Kate Theater in Old Saybrook and a few days later we went to the Goodspeed Opera House to see a wonderful musical. Both theaters are unique and conveniently located. The Chamard Winery in Clinton and lunch deckside overlooking the vineyards was great. We had a terrific waiter and the food was delicious.

There are so many restaurants to choose from . . . The Boom at Pilots Point Marina has the view of the boats and the sunset, Lenny and Joe's was a favorite for eat in and take out. We love lobster so the Lobster Landing in Clinton was a great choice for hot lobster rolls and butter. For times when we wanted to stay put . . . the kitchen at the studio and outside grilling made dining in fun.

West Beach was great for Barbara who LOVES the ocean and the fishing/crabbing and kayaking on the tidal river was Duncan's top of the list relaxing activities. Just sitting on the dock with a morning cup of coffee was so special.

There was more that we did and much more to do next time and there will be a next time. Simply put, being there was WONDERFUL!!

Wow!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the contemporary studio for a week, and really enjoyed it. It was everything it advertised and more! Ilsa and Bob were the perfect hosts. It was a peaceful location and creative in its' use of space. So much nicer than staying in a motel. We hated to leave! Hope we can stay again next summer.

Beautiful, Peaceful, Private Outstanding Hosts

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a few days in this unique space to celebrate our one-year anniversary, and it was an experience we'll remember well for a long time.

The studio (really more of a small home) is a beautiful work of contemporary architecture, designed and built with loving attention to detail and smart, creative use of materials. For example, the floor boarding is sawn from the trees that were cleared from the land where the house now stands; the front wall of the great room is made of a corrugated semi-translucent composite that provides privacy while filling the space with daylight and shadows from the surrounding trees. Expansive views of salt marsh and verdant grounds from multiple angles. Spacious and comfortable for 2 and would easily sleep 4.

Bob and Ilsa were uncommonly hospitable and gracious hosts, and they paid thoughtful attention to small things to make us feel at home. We arrived late on Friday night, and the fridge was stocked with fresh cream and orange juice for the morning. Beyond that, while we had total privacy, we had the opportunity to meet them for a little while, which really added to our experience. They're very cool people with great stories to tell.

Would absolutely recommend this place to friends. Feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay someplace so special.

A Wonderful Time

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 2 grown sons arrived and were welcomed by a nice bottle of wine from Ilsa & Bob. There was even OJ and coffee for our first morning, which was great! The studio was very clean and welcoming. Begin from the CT coast and Westbrook for many years our week was filled with a flow of friends and family. There was ample room for gatherings and the outside table and chairs worked out perfectly. We kayaked often from the dock to Westbrook town beach and even up the river north a bit. The sleeping loft offered nice privacy and the boy’s enjoyed having the larger space in the living area at night. The art both on the walls and around the studio created a great environment. We would highly recommend this property and are thankful for meeting such warm and gracious hosts as Ilsa & Bob.

Great time!

What an amazing experience! Ilsa and Bob are so warm and inviting and their property is just magnificent. We basked under the sun at the beach (very close by), ate at all of their favorite restaurant recommendations, and even got to spent a wonderful evening getting to know Ilsa and Bob. Because our stay was during the 4th of July, we were able to see fireworks too just across the river outside of the studio. It's a divine destination and truly a unique and fun studio. We also fell deeply in love with Westbrook. We'll be back for sure.
