https://goo.gl/Tb1WP5

In 1956, this former school building held its first lessons in the hilltop village in the heart of the stunning Douro Valley.

50 years later the school building was rescued and in the following years a project was created to transform it into what is now a very high quality construction designed to provide you a taste of the World Heritage Site known as the Douro Valley.

'The House of Learning' overlooks the stunning landscape of vineyards and olive groves of the Douro Valley as far as the eye can see.

Your first reaction is to breath in and appreciate the natural peaceful beauty and yet these wonderful elements are only just over an hour from Porto International airport.

As you read on you will discover that there is lots to do for all the family and all age groups.

We and our super housekeeper Carla are here to make sure you make the most of your visit to the Douro and the North of Portugal.

What makes this holiday home different?

1.Breakfast is freshly made and served for you every morning at a time convenient to you do you can start the day with a smile and no stress!

3. Carla can make dinner at home for you

4. We can provide you many suggestions for places to go for dinner in the local area

5. We can help you plan day trips and excursions for all age groups – both before you arrive and during your stay.

House Description

Internal

The house is comprised of the original school building all renovated tastefully and with very high spec and presented in a quirky fun way with superbly thought out reminders of its heritage/roots.

The other part of the house is a new modern construction and the whole thing comes together in a well presented fusion of traditional and contemporary.

The daytime living space is fabulous!

High ceilings, big bright open window spaces, this huge open plan space is subtly divided into three areas. The quirky fun hallway and 'school themed' part with black board and original school desks provides nostalgic fun for adults and nowadays novelty fun for kids who often can't believe desks like those existed!

The other two areas as you can see from the picture gallery include a good sized dining area, ideal for indoor gatherings to enjoy great food and wine and the spacious relaxed lounge area. Note both these areas are served by a double sided central fireplace, a nice feature at any time of the year but naturally it comes into its own during the winter season.

The kitchen is modern, well equipped and very pleasant to be in if you enjoy cooking as a therapeutic pass time.

There are 4 very comfortable good sized bedrooms all en-suite, which accommodate 8 people. However the twin bedroom has trundle beds allowing for another 2 adults and in the master bedroom there is a cute sofa bed ideal for another person to sleep.

Outside

There is a 'pool house' outside just a few steps away which is a superb entertainment area for all. Pool table, good music sound system and wi-fi are all provided and there is comfortable seating too for you to sit and relax.

All the rooms in the house enjoy wi-fi coverage and are air-conditioned for your comfort.

The pool is a good size for leisure and enjoys superb views across the valley.

Outdoor tables, deck chairs, sun parasols and a built in BBQ are all provided for your comfort. There are even out door games such as garden dominos provided.

A mini 5-star hotel

  • 5 of 5

Think of this house as 4 bedrooms at a small 5-star hotel. The building was creatively renovated into a comfortable house with four en suite bedrooms. The interior design and furnishings are top notch, with spacious and modern bathrooms. The kitchen is large and functional. The dining and living room are great for a group. The view from the house of the valley is spectacular. Great pool, game room and laundry facilities. It is hard to imagine nicer accommodations. That being said, the village where the house is located lacks amenities and is not that interesting. The location is a bit remote, so be prepared to drive 20 minutes or so to access groceries, restaurants, gas, or any activities. The winding roads are a bit intimidating, especially at night. It would be a good idea to do your grocery run before arriving at the house. Carla, the housekeeper, is a fantastic host. She prepared delicious breakfasts for us each morning and was very helpful in arranging dinner reservations and providing activity suggestions. The house next door is also managed by the same group, and the two houses would combine perfectly for a larger group gathering.

Owner's Response: Hello Gay Thank you for your recent stay and excellent review. I would however like to put your comments about driving and access amentities into perspective for other would be guests. You come from near Baltimore/Washington DC - North America where the streets of your cities and small towns only have straight lines - and hardly any bends and were built in only ‘recent’ history. Even your basic ‘national roads’ not highways are HUGE :-) You’ve visited a small European country with a massive history and futhermore you visited a region where there are steep hills to grow the famous Port Wine Grapes on the banks of the river Douro. The roads are actually ‘normal’ for Western Europe and your state of ‘intimidation’ is rather unfounded when observed objectively. Further more the villa (as clearly stated) is actually only 8-9 minutes drive (even driving in reverse!) away from the lovely riverside village of Pinhao, which has a grocers, several restaurants, a butcher, several cafes and cake shops etc etc. It even has the superb Quinta do Bomfim winery famous for Dows and Grahams Port. So in summary, the roads are perfectly ‘normal’ and you clealry were driving extremely ‘cautiously’ - and given where you normally live I’m sure it must have been ‘intimidating’ to you - but I think it’s disengenuous to suggest it is intimidating for ALL people and that there are NO ameneties for 20 minutes (a 100% exaggeration based on your driving capabilities) I just really wanted to make that specifically clear to prospective guests :-)

Gorgeous property in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two nights at this beautiful home in the Douro valley mountains. It is off the beaten path outside of Porto but it is a great house. We had 8 adult guests and fit perfectly. Carla, the host, made us breakfast each day and made us feel at home. It was a great experience for anyone looking to get the more rural Portugal experience while being close to wineries and have a beautiful Mountain View and a great pool.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your stay and your kind review. We really enjoyed looking after you during your short stay. Just for clarification for future guests; 1. The house is not in the mountains - there are only a few 'mountains' in Portugal but not in the Douro Valley - they are further South. The terrain is dramatic hills often terraced which is where the world famous Port Wine grapes are grown 2. The house is indeed private and in tranquil rural setting, but guests should be aware it's only 8 minutes drive to the cute riverside town of Pinhao which even has its own train station. Kind regards Fernando and Carla

The property was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

There were 4 couples that stayed and we all thought it was a beautiful house to stay in. We loved that it had been a school that was transformed into an amazing home. The décor had the classroom feel but done in a very decorative way. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all very spacious. We used the pool table every evening and thought it was great the way it was placed in another building right beside the pool. You capture the most amazing views of the vineyards. Truly spectacular!!!!!

The best part of this wonderful property is the beautiful lady, Carla, that takes care of the house. She came every morning and prepared breakfast for us. She went over and above everything that we could have expected. We just had to ask her anything as far as what we should do, and where we should visit. She guided us in the right direction everytime, and we were able to see and do many amazing things. Carla even drove into the next town to be with one of our guests when he had to go to the Doctor. She called the office and made all the arrangements. There really was nothing this wonderful lady wouldn't do for us.

The only downfall with the house is the drive up to the top where it is located and the driveway up the house. We found we tried to be home before dark so we were not attempting the climb in the pitch black.

Fabulously located villa with the most amazing view over the valley! Everything was really modern and so lovely and clean thanks to Carla and Marta. Loads of great places to visit nearby and Carla is always on hand to help should you need it. Booking and organising things before arrival was very easy thanks to Fernando. Best villa stay we've ever had, would go back again!

Amazing villa in the heart of Douro Valley

  • 5 of 5

The Old School House Villa is amazing, the facilities are great, the bedrooms and bathrooms finished to such a high standard and the living area well laid out, the way the theme has remained is such a lovely touch. There are lots of nice Quinta's to explore nearby and plenty of sightseeing. Estrela looked after us so well, we wanted to bring her home with us! We're hoping we can go back again.
