3 bedroom cottage next to the beautiful Gelt Woods, a perfect get-a-way

Opened in May 2014, The Old Hare & Hounds is a three bedroom holiday cottage in the quiet hamlet of Low Gelt near Brampton in Cumbria.

Once part of the Hare and Hounds Inn, the cottage has been stylishly converted into a comfortable and modern holiday let for families or groups to enjoy. It features a large lounge / dining room with wood burning stove, a well supplied kitchen, free internet access and three en-suite bedrooms, one of which has been converted for easy access.

Directly opposite the cottage is Low Gelt Bridge, the main entrance to Gelt Woods, one of the hidden gems of Cumbria. Gelt Woods is a delightful deciduous woodland which winds its way along the valley of the "mad" river Gelt. The walks through the woodlands loop through a landscape of crags and riverside paths, abundant with bird life and the occasional deer. If you are lucky you may also see a red squirrel as we are one of the few places in England where they still survive. For cyclists, route 72 - Hadrian's Cycleway, goes right past the door, leading on to the wild and fascinating Hadrian's Wall.

Low Gelt gives easy access to the A69, the main east / west road from Carlisle to Newcastle, making the Old Hare & Hounds an ideal base to explore the Roman forts of Hadrian's Wall and the border country between England and Scotland. The North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty is nearby and Keswick in the Lake District, Kielder Forest, Newcastle and South West Scotland are all no more than an hour's drive away.

The Old Hare and Hounds has been completely renovated during 2013 / 2014 with all new furniture and fittings to give you that little bit of luxury you deserve on your holiday. With all three bedrooms being en-suite it is a perfect location for couples, families or groups of friends.

For off-season breaks the combination of a wood burning stove with fuel provided, underfloor heating / radiators, double glazing and modern levels of insulation provide a cosy atmosphere throughout the cottage. The heating runs using an air source heat pump with all electricity being included in the booking price.

It has a shower, washbasin and toilet and an electric heated towel rail. The upstairs a good sized en-suite bathroom has a bath with overhead shower, washbasin and toilet. Attached to the twin bedroom is a small en-suite shower room with washbasin and toilet

The master bedroom has a king sized double bed and a single / day bed. (Please be advised that whilst the cottage can sleep seven the lounge/dining room has been designed for six adults in comfort). The "attic" style twin bedroom has two single beds.

A superior property in a great location

The property has been completed to a very high standard with great attention to detail. This also extends to the facilities available, again a very extensive range of needs have been thought of and catered for. With outstanding local and quite private walks in Gelt Woods we were only disappointed with not sighting a Red Squirrel; more probably to noise our dogs made playing in the woods and stream! We had an excellent week and would recommend the property without reservation.

5 star holiday cottage.

This cottage is well equipped and is a well presented property. We all felt instantly at home and had an amazing Christmas stay.

We took full advantage of the local nature trails at the near by wood and looking forward to booking this property again.

Fantastic stay

This is a really family friendly place to stay. Travel cot, high chair and stair gate available. The house is immaculate inside and has lots of space. The owner has thought of everything you might need. The woods outside are fantastic for exploring. You are in easy travelling distance to Hadrian's Wall. We also visited Lanercost Priory which was lovely. Brougham Castle was amazing for the children with lots hiding places and views over the landscape. Lowther Castle had the most perfect picnic area and adventure playground. Great fun had by all and I highly recommend staying.

Fantastic, a great base for walking, bike riding and exploring Hadrians wall and all the other interesting places to visit.

Not just locally but further afield like Alnwick Castle and Beamish (what a great day out so much to see!)

Great walks across the road by the river. (dog loved it)

The property was as described with great facilities, clean and very well maintained.

I would recommend this property to anyone who has a sense of adventure!

There is also a local pub/restaurant 5 minutes up the road with excellent food, dogs very welcome!

Extremely comfortable and well appointed property. Very clean and spacious

The cottage was everything we hoped it would be, the beds were comfortable as were the sofas and chairs in the lounge. Bathrooms are spacious with good showers and the whole cottage is maintained to a high standard.

The location is great with plenty of walks from the front door, which meant that we were able to keep driving to a minimum. Hadrians Wall, Carlisle and Brampton are all very close.

The Old Hare & Hounds is two miles south west of Brampton in Cumbria. We are about 400 metres off the main A69 link road between Carlisle and Newcastle, far enough away from the main road to give a tranquil feel but close enough to give easy access to Cumbria, Northumberland and southern Scotland.

The pretty market town of Brampton was founded in the 7th century as an Anglian settlement, since when it has been a staging post in the ebbs and flows of both English and Scottish history. Much of Brampton consists of historic buildings built of the local red sandstone, including the octagonal Moot Hall (built 1817) and St Martin's Church, designed by the pre-Raphaelite Phillip Webb (built 1874-8) with stained glass windows by Edward Burne Jones.

Brampton has a bank, post office, two small supermarkets (a large Tesco superstore can be found next to the M6 / A69 junction), and a good selection of other local shops. There are several good tea shops, pubs and restaurants in and around the town, and plenty of take-aways to allow you to treat yourself. Closer to home is the Lane End Inn, about half a mile walk from the Old Hare & Hounds.

In 2011, Brampton became the 66th town in the United Kingdom and the second in Cumbria to gain Walkers are Welcome status.

Immediately outside the cottage a small bridge over the river Gelt leads to the Gelt Woods car park and access to the woods themselves. Gelt Woods are a favourite with locals, due to the charming views and the ever-changing nature of this hidden river valley. A number of paths follow the river valley upstream past past rock-cut sandstone cliffs. A short distance up the valley are a number of large sandstone cliffs which, on closer inspection, still show the quarry marks left by the Roman soldiers who extracted stone from them for Hadrian's Wall.

The woodlands is a haven for wildlife and part of it is an RSPB nature reserve. If you are lucky you may see red squirrels and well as the occasional deer in the forest. Recently a badger was spotted walking past the front door of the cottage!
