Space 16,145 sq. ft.

Minimum Stay 7 - 30 nights

About the property

3 ensuite bedrooms, large lounge and kitchen, air conditioning and free wifi

The lounge/dining room is at the rear of the gîte looking out over the garden. The large double glazed windows on two sides of the room, give plenty of natural light. There is a chestnut floor and large wooden beams. English TV, DVD player and a selection of DVD's, books and games are included. Free wifi is available. The fully equipped kitchen area is to one side of the lounge. There are two sinks, a cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. There is a washing machine in the small utility room to the rear of the kitchen. There is plenty of cupboard space and a wine rack!

There is a large double bedroom and two medium sized twin bedrooms, all with en-suite 'wet room' bathrooms. Each en-suite has a mixer shower with thermostat, a toilet, basin and heated towel rail. The larger en-suite also has a bath with thermostat taps and hand held shower.

With summers that have reached the upper 30 degrees and winters down to minus 20 degrees, we have given some thought to cooling and heating. We have installed new technology heat pump air conditioning units, with eco friendly refrigerant which can both cool and heat. They are operated with a simple remote control.

The owners old farm house is next door and together with the gîte are on a one hectare (about 2.5 acres) site. The gîte has its own garden and patio with seats, tables, and barbeque. The swimming pool with sun beds and chairs is in the main garden area. It is only shared with the owners. It is approximately 5 by 10 meters and has roman steps one end and a sloping bottom. The depth ranges from 1 to 2 meters. The pool meets the very strict French safety standards. It has a thermal cover and the temperature mid summer reaches 30 degrees. The water is kept pure with bromine, which is much kinder to the skin than chlorine. In the main garden there is a large grass area for ball games. There is an outdoor table tennis table and bicycles are also available

Close at hand are the village tennis and boule/petanque courts and this area also has a picnic table and a small, children's play area.

For the young children we have available a cot, high chairs, garden toys such as a slide and other similar items.

During the renovation process we have made sure that the gîte is fully wheelchair friendly. The main access to the gîte is by ramp into the lounge area. All the rooms are on the ground floor and there are no steps or changes in level. There is a high level electric socket in most rooms and lots in the kitchen area. The kitchen also has a low level, wheelchair accessible sink with a view over the garden. All the bathrooms are wet rooms with no shower trays. The basins are wall mounted and allow wheelchair access. There are grab rails by the showers and toilets.

We have the benefit of a special climate region, with less rain and warmer temperatures than the rest of central France.

The nearest local town is Civray, about 5 minutes by car which is an old town on the river Charante. The Romanesque church in the town is one of the oldest in France and the restored pre-reformation painted interior is superb. The market in the town is the best local market (food, clothing, leather, souvenirs etc) in the area with several pavement cafes. There are also several big supermarkets on the outskirts of the town. There are many interesting events during the year, amongst the best of which is the night market usually the first Friday evening in August. Other events include Bastille Day (14th July) celebrations, which usually include a large antique and bric-a-brac fair and end with fireworks. There is also the local agricultural fair in late August, amongst the attractions of which are the local Poitou donkeys.

The beautiful countryside is calm and tranquil but still with plenty to do. From the local markets, bags of roman heritage, wonderful food and wine to Monkey world, Futuroscope, Puy du Fou and the towns of Cognac, La Rochelle and others.

Relaxed surroundings that met or surpassed all our needs

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, this gite is far more spacious and light than you would guess from the photos. It is wheelchair friendly with access ramp, wide internal doors and three spacious ensuite wet rooms all with showers and one with a bath. Plentiful hot water. The double room is particularly spacious with a walk-in dressing room. Our three year old grandson loved running up and down the long corridor, at one time chasing a mouse (the setting although in a village is very rural!). The gite has comfy old-style furniture, and good wifi coverage. There are two small fridges, one with a small ice box. For six guests fridge space might be a bit tight at times. Washing machine and dishwasher both worked well and plentiful supplies of detergent etc. There is a small tv with British channels via satellite. The open plan living area works fine for families (we had one week of our fortnight with 6 persons and the other week just two adults.)

The garden was superb. Long and private with a long lawn and patio with table and chairs and seating area with bbq at the far end which, along with the hedge/shrubbery gives a real sense of privacy from the owners' garden. That said, David and Jeannette were super hosts; warm and welcome on our arrival, helpful and on-hand without being at all intrusive. The excellent and super clean pool is beyond the garden and again shrubs (and the distance from the house and gite) provide a nice sense of quiet and privacy. The pool is shared with the owners (and their family when present) but this was never a problem.

Civray is an attractive small town just a five minute drive away with SuperU and Lidl supermarkets together on the Saint Gaudent side of town.

The village of Lizant is 4km from Saint Gaudent and has a very pleasant bar/restaurant. You can even walk there (55 mins) along pleasant tracks through pretty farmland and woods.

There are kayaks/canoes & tree canopy adventures to be had a short drive away at Taize-Saize, leaflets of walks obtainable from Tourist Office in Civray. Plenty of pretty villages and small towns to explore; a half day of VeloRail fun enjoyed by the whole family an hour or so away at Confolens.

Saint Gaudent is a small and sleepy village with no shop or bar but a small playground with seesaw etc for little ones and a tennis court.

If you want modern luxurious style & large flatscreen TV then this gite isn't for you; but for a super relaxed and spacious holiday base this would be hard to beat. Very recommended.

The property was incredible with every comfort taken care of

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week. We are a family of five; with three boys aged 5, 8 and 11 so the property suited us just fine. The cottage was just perfect. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable, each with huge en suite wet rooms. The air conditioning units in each room were a Godsend, as we had a very hot week. We loved the open plan living space; ideal for family meals and evening games. The WiFi was really handy (yes I know we should manage a week without technology, but there you go) and I'm ashamed to say we found having UK TV handy too (CBBC kept our early risers quiet in the mornings).

There's a large private garden which gave some great outdoor space. The patio and BBQ area was lovely. The pool is shared with the owners and sits within their garden, but we used it a LOT and this never seemed to be a problem. The owners stipulate that children always have to be supervised when at the pool, but to be honest we wouldn't dream of sending them to the pool on their own anyway.

St Gaudent was a lovely village and the larger town of Civray is only 5 minutes down the road by car and has decent sized supermarkets and a great, French town centre.

All in all we had a brilliant week and would recommend this cottage for any family that want to experience a slice of French life.
