The cottage is in the hills above the southern Tenerife town of Güimar. It is surrounded by vineyards and has magnificent views of the high mountains to one side, and the sea to the other. There are local shops and a well supplied village within easy walking distance. It is best suited to walking holidays in the autumn, winter and spring, but the sea is only seven minutes away by car. Güimar is well connected to the southern airport and to the capital city of Santa Cruz by motorway. It also has one of the main access routes to the Mount Teide national park in the island interior. The house is a traditional cottage newly modernized and decorated. It has all amenities including an internet connection.
I am an astronomer from England who has been living in Tenerife for over 30 years. My wife is from the village of Güimar. She was born in this cottage which belonged to her family, and where her grandparents lived. Her grandfather left her the cottage in his will. After inheriting the house she has modernized it and it is ready for letting.
We have been living in Güimar for over 18 years, where we have brought up our son. We have very warm relations with the district of La Hoya and the kind local people who have known my wife since she was a little girl. The area is spectacular, as Güimar is near the foot of the highest mountain in Spain, Mount Teide, but with great views of the sea and the surrounding country. The local wines, especially the white wine, are a great speciality to be sampled in the numerous local bars and restaurants. The house is quite small, highly suitable for a couple, or a couple with a child, and sleeps up to 4 people.
Staying in this cottage is about as different from typical tourist resort accommodation as one could imagine, and for us, far preferable. The house is at the upper edge of the town of Guimar, with good food shops and restaurants catering primarily for local people. The town is 3km from the autopista del sur, providing easy access to the airport and the east and south of the island, and also has a road leading up to pine forests, Las Canadas and El Teide. The Puertito de Guimar, 2km below the autopista, has nice beaches and places to eat.
Parking for the house is at the bottom of a short paved slope that also gives access to three other houses. Living room, kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor, with bedrooms above, reached by an uncovered stone staircase giving on to a small terrace with a place to sit outside and enjoy the impressive view. Furniture and equipment are fine, the house is carefully maintained, and there is a good WiFi connection. Owners John and Leo are extremely helpful in every way, and can be contacted at any time during one's stay by landline phone.
We can't remember getting better value for money in our long experience of Tenerife, and are highly likely to return.
We spent a week staying at the cottage in Güímar. We found the place, clean, tidy and well supplied. We tend to go out hiking most days so like the option of cooking when we return. The kitchen had everything needed for preparing meals, plus John had provided a lovely selection of supplies to get us going.
The accommodation is simple but very comfortable. The central area is open and has stairs leading up to a lovely balcony outside the bedrooms. The views from there are fantastic, with Gran Canaria visible out to sea in one direction, and the Güímar valley in the other. The location is great, being tucked away enough to have a more rural feel, yet Güímar and access to the main TF-1 highway are close by. The Port of Güímar is just 10 minutes’ drive away and has a nice beach front for swimming and black sand beach. There is also an interesting short hike to the east of the port through some lovely coastal, volcanic and cactus populated landscapes.
There is good access to other parts of the island, and we found it easy to get to the hiking areas, especially the north-east corner where the wonderful Anaga mountains are. There is also a good road close by taking you up to toward Teide National Park. Being on the southern side of the island, the property enjoys a good deal of sunshine.
What makes this a real 5 star review however was the hospitality extended by John and his wife. From meeting us in Güímar on our arrival, taking us to the supermarket, checking there were no problem, and sharing his passion for his work as an Astrophysicist made this holiday very memorable and unique. Highly recommended.
The communication with the owner was quick and perfect. The description of the property was accurate. All the rooms were clean and very well equipped. The owner took us for a brief tour around the city of Guimar and showed us all near shops, restaurants and atractions. We stayed for 10 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The house is situated in the vineyards and gardens with a view to the sea. We would definitely like to come back and also we would recomend this property to our friends for a holiday.
The home is spacious, larger than expected from the photographs, and very well equipped. The owners are very co-operative and thoughtful.
There is easy access to the highway and thus all parts of the island, and on the other hand Güimar is not overcrowded by tourists, but restaurants and all necessary shops are close nearby.
We enjoyed very much the fantastic view around from the terrace and at night-to the sky.
Unfortunately our stay was too short (four days) to discover all highlights, but there are many good reasons to come back again.
