About The Owner

I am an astronomer from England who has been living in Tenerife for over 30 years. My wife is from the village of Güimar. She was born in this cottage which belonged to her family, and where her grandparents lived. Her grandfather left her the cottage in his will. After inheriting the house she has modernized it and it is ready for letting.

Why The Owner chose Güímar

We have been living in Güimar for over 18 years, where we have brought up our son. We have very warm relations with the district of La Hoya and the kind local people who have known my wife since she was a little girl. The area is spectacular, as Güimar is near the foot of the highest mountain in Spain, Mount Teide, but with great views of the sea and the surrounding country. The local wines, especially the white wine, are a great speciality to be sampled in the numerous local bars and restaurants. The house is quite small, highly suitable for a couple, or a couple with a child, and sleeps up to 4 people.

Clean, well equipped traditional style house, quiet area, great value

  • 5 of 5

Our house was spotlessly clean and very well equipped with a nice terrace/balcony on which we could have our breakfast. There were useful supplies in the kitchen such as tea, coffee, sugar, honey and John, our owner had left a welcome bottle of local wine. John also gave clear directions and was very prompt to answer any queries. It was on the edge of the town of Guimar looking out to some farmland and was very quiet. The beds were comfortable. It felt like a proper home rather than generic accommodation and we enjoyed our stay there. Thank you to our host.

Owner's Response: You were the kind of friendly responsible holidaymakers who are especially welcome in our cottage. It is easy to be a good host to you, and we would be very happy to welcome you again if you choose to revisit. If you think of any suggestions for improvements we would of course be very pleased to receive them. Thanks for you kind report.

Unique and lovely place to experience a bit of Tenerife life

  • 5 of 5

This traditional village home has been lovingly restored with modern comfort and convenience at it's heart. Everything is meticulously provided for living there fully. There are wonderful spaces both indoors and outdoors with a roof deck, a terrace overlooking the valley all the way to the sea--at the bedroom level, and a small open courtyard on the main level. John is an exceptional host, from the first booking enquiry, he took great care of details, making sure we had good directions and a guide to welcome us to the house. The rest of Tenerife is easy to reach from Guimar. We found we really enjoyed staying close and exploring this friendly village and surroundings. Staying here was an exceptional experience in every way and we hope to return for a longer visit.

Charming village house

The house is in a quiet position with attractive views all around. It is well equipped and furnished and only a short drive from the centre of Guimar where there are plenty of shops and restaurants.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this kind summary. We aim to keep improving the cottage as we have been doing gradually since we renovated it. We welcome guests who appreciate the tranquility of the countryside but where they can easily get down to the sea when they wish

Great house, great location. Host out of this world.

Spacious, clean, has everything we need and more. Near to the city if you want that, but quiet and country-like when you get home. Groceries nearby and a wonderful Sunday farmers market.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for your review. One of the pleasures of running the cottage is that one meets a variety of very interesting people who enrich ones life. This has certainly been true of Ray and Kerry Duperron, whose world travel experience gave very agreeable conversation. It was great to have you visit.

Traditional house with great character and with exceptionally helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

Staying in this cottage is about as different from typical tourist resort accommodation as one could imagine, and for us, far preferable. The house is at the upper edge of the town of Guimar, with good food shops and restaurants catering primarily for local people. The town is 3km from the autopista del sur, providing easy access to the airport and the east and south of the island, and also has a road leading up to pine forests, Las Canadas and El Teide. The Puertito de Guimar, 2km below the autopista, has nice beaches and places to eat.

Parking for the house is at the bottom of a short paved slope that also gives access to three other houses. Living room, kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor, with bedrooms above, reached by an uncovered stone staircase giving on to a small terrace with a place to sit outside and enjoy the impressive view. Furniture and equipment are fine, the house is carefully maintained, and there is a good WiFi connection. Owners John and Leo are extremely helpful in every way, and can be contacted at any time during one's stay by landline phone.

We can't remember getting better value for money in our long experience of Tenerife, and are highly likely to return.

Owner's Response: The Ashmoles were very special guests in our cottage. Before their arrival we had checked on internet and knew that they were scientists who had studied the Canary Islands, in particular Tenerife. However on meeting them we discovered just how much they do know about Tenerife, and in fact were lucky enough to obtain a copy of their book "NATURAL HISTORY OF TENERIFE" which has just been published and is a magnificent guide to many aspects: geology, botany and zoology, with beautiful photographic illustrations. This is an example of how one can benefit in an unexpected way from receiving guests. They proved as charming as they were active, and we would be particularly pleased if they chose to visit us again.

We spent a week staying at the cottage in Güímar. We found the place, clean, tidy and well supplied. We tend to go out hiking most days so like the option of cooking when we return. The kitchen had everything needed for preparing meals, plus John had provided a lovely selection of supplies to get us going.

The accommodation is simple but very comfortable. The central area is open and has stairs leading up to a lovely balcony outside the bedrooms. The views from there are fantastic, with Gran Canaria visible out to sea in one direction, and the Güímar valley in the other. The location is great, being tucked away enough to have a more rural feel, yet Güímar and access to the main TF-1 highway are close by. The Port of Güímar is just 10 minutes’ drive away and has a nice beach front for swimming and black sand beach. There is also an interesting short hike to the east of the port through some lovely coastal, volcanic and cactus populated landscapes.

There is good access to other parts of the island, and we found it easy to get to the hiking areas, especially the north-east corner where the wonderful Anaga mountains are. There is also a good road close by taking you up to toward Teide National Park. Being on the southern side of the island, the property enjoys a good deal of sunshine.

What makes this a real 5 star review however was the hospitality extended by John and his wife. From meeting us in Güímar on our arrival, taking us to the supermarket, checking there were no problem, and sharing his passion for his work as an Astrophysicist made this holiday very memorable and unique. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: This review is very kind, so kind that I have to say that it sounds as if we don't really deserve it! We do try very hard to cater for the real needs of our guests, and we feel that the house, which has great sentimental value because my wife was born there, is really very pleasant indeed. In this case it was easy to help you, Maggie and Colin, because you were good to talk to and treated the house with respect. It was a pleasure to receive you, and it would be a pleasure to see you here again.
