Description

Le Mas: 5-star luxury with private swimming pool and stunning views

Le Mas is a characterful 5-star farmhouse and a perfect home from home, full of original beams, fireplaces and thick stone walls. It was completely renovated in 2016.

The large well-equipped kitchen (55m²) is the centre of the house. The terracotta floor tiles lead to the living room (44m²), which like the kitchen has exposed beams, an enormous fireplace with a wood burner (wood provided). If you want to catch up on the news or watch a film there is a flat screen satellite TV with English channels.

There are 5 spacious bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms: 2 on the ground floor; and 3 on the first floor.

Opposite the kitchen is the covered summer kitchen with a dining table and 12 chairs, the perfect place to escape the sun. It overlooks the private swimming pool and the fields and woods beyond.

The Daily Telegraph has been to stay in order to review us and has awarded us 9/10, the highest mark they have given any hotel or holiday home in the Dordogne.

About the property

Le Mas & Le Mazet

This charming 5-star16th century restored farmhouse (Le Mas) and 4-star characterful cottage (Le Mazet) are two detached houses on the property which can be rented separately or together. Both properties have their own private areas of the garden.

Le Mas has 5 spacious bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a large kitchen and sitting room (both with big fireplaces, terracotta tiled floors and beams), a fantastic summer kitchen with views over the private swimming pool and the countryside beyond.

Le Mazet is approached through the garden and has 1 bedroom with ensuite bathroom on the lower ground floor and a lovely sitting room with open-plan kitchen on the upper ground floor. There is a large fireplace with wood burner in the sitting room, and the views are spectacular. Le Mazet has no use of the pool.

Both houses were renovated by Joris van Grinsven (renowned architect and interior designer) in 2016.

We are delighted that Le Mas has been awarded 5 stars by the Dordogne Perigord Tourist Board, on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, and Le Mazet 4 stars. There are only 15 other hotels and gites in the Dordogne with 5 stars. The classification is based on the facilities, space, state of the accomodation and information we offer guests.

The Daily Telegraph has been to stay in order to review us and has awarded us 9/10, the highest mark they have given any hotel or holiday home in the Dordogne.

Le Mas & Le Mazet are situated in Sainte Croix, a hamlet nestled between the medieval towns of Monpazier and Beaumont du Périgord, only 40 minutes from Bergerac Airport.

Jasmine, roses and wisteria climb the stone walls and around the shuttered windows. There are unspoilt views over glorious countryside and to the 12th century village church.

2.5 acres of garden offer you private areas to relax amongst lavender and rosemary, enjoy the wildlife and birds, or dine out under the stars.

There is much to explore in the area. Markets selling local produce and antiques. Castles, churches and prehistoric caves, as well as restaurants serving the region’s specialities (such as truffles, duck and foie gras). There are stunning walks and a well-known cycle route on the doorstep; canoeing down the river, golf, horse riding. We are happy to advise on what to do and where to go.

About Rupert Springfield

Rupert moved from England to Amsterdam when he was 25 and ran his own antique shop for 5 years before going on to be the head of fundraising for the Dutch breast cancer charity. Franck was a theater producer, first traveling throughout Europe producing Cirque du Soleil for 7 years and then producing musicals and events in the Netherlands.

We decided in 2015 to leave the beautiful city of Amsterdam and our careers and to move to the Dordogne - swopping one UNESCO World Heritage site for another!

When we drove up the long drive to Le Mas for the first time, we realized how special the place was and how amazing it could become. We love its history, character and charm and the beautiful countryside all around it, with all the wildlife, peace and tranquility it offers. This part of France is not only beautiful, but has exemplary food and wine, culture and history.

We have converted a tobacco drying barn on the property into our own home and renovated Le Mas & Le Mazet, and are very proud of how beautiful and comfortable they have become. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Why Rupert Springfield chose Sainte-Croix

Having come on holiday here several times, we were attracted not only the beauty of this area, but also by the quality of life it offers. It's easy to become part of the community, the local food and wine is delicious, there is history around every corner, there are lots of cultural activities and the weather is fantastic!

When we found Le Mas & Le Mazet, we fell in love with everything it has to offer us and what it has to offer our guests. Tranquility, beautiful views, an authentic and characterful Perigordine property with history, and above all comfort. We look forward to you enjoying all of this on your holiday!

What makes this house unique

From the moment you turn off the road and start up the long drive through the woods, between the fields and through the gates, you enter a special place. Le Mas & Le Mazet are understated and informal, their charm and character are infectious. Just sitting in the sun on the centuries-old stone steps, looking over the pool and the countryside beyond, hearing the church bells tolling across the fields, is enough to allow you to forget your worries and your work!

All of the small details add much to your experience of the property. The warm colour of the walls, the stone basin in the kitchen where generations have washed, the well where they drew water and the stone fireplace where they cooked. The cobblestones outside the kitchen where the cows were led to be milked. The openings high up in the walls for doves and owls.

The space, the tranquility and the beauty of the property make it very special.

Exceeds expectations!! ( which were high!!)

  • 5 of 5

Have to agree with previous reviews ...this is a very special place! The attention to detail and extras provided are just perfect. The bedrooms and bathrooms are all lovely, so no fighting over who gets the nicest!!! Spotlesslessly clean everywhere. The whole atmosphere of Le Mas is just really tasteful and peaceful, which helps you to relax straight away. It's a great spot for young and old...Rupert and Franck have thought of everything and there are no hidden extras! Thanks for a really warm welcome ...and hopefully we will be returning in the summer to take advantage of the fabulous pool and summer kitchen.

Fabulous property and warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from celebrating my husband's 50th birthday at Le Mas and have had an amazing time. We are lucky and normally stay in lovely hotels and have always been a little wary of self-catering. However, Le Mas and Rupert and Franck have restored our faith in it and have shown how it should be done. The pool area was beautiful and the outdoor kitchen and eating area fantastic. We spent many evenings drinking and eating there until the early hours. In the house everything was spotless and every need provided for. Every detail had been carefully considered and the place felt like a home from home. The beds were some of the most comfortable that I have ever slept in and all of our friends remarked upon the same. Rupert and Franck were superb hosts, leaving a lovely welcome pack for the first night and on hand to give advice about the area - their restaurant recommendations are to be followed! They are , rightly, very proud of the special place that they have created at Le Mas. All of us are looking forward to returning and would not hesitate to recommend Le Mas. Thank you Rupert and Franck.

Perfect relaxing holiday in stunning setting

  • 5 of 5

A wonderfully restored farmhouse in a beautiful and quiet setting. The hosts have thought of every detail to make your stay as relaxing as possible from providing excellent kitchen facilities and equipment to loads of games for children to a full welcome pack that means no trips to the supermarket immediately necessary. The pool has wonderful views and there are no arguments about rooms as they are all excellent. Rupert and Franck are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. We hope to return!

Stunning, top quality property in beautiful locati

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Le Mas and wanted to say just how impressed we were with not just the property, views and location, but with your attention to detail and care with which you run it. It is so refreshing to find such a clean, beautifully designed and well equipped home to adopt for a week and a wonderful bonus to meet two such lovely guys at the same time. We honestly couldn't recommend Le Mas et Le Mazet with any greater candor.

Schitterend

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Le Mas and Le Mazet are situated in the south of the Dordogne, slightly away from the summer traffic jams and not far from the neighbouring departments of Lot et Garonne and the Lot. The area offers so much to explore – châteaux, bastide (medieval fortified) towns, food markets and night markets where the locals sit at long tables enjoying the prepared food, antique markets, wine tours, prehistoric caves and more besides.

Here is a selection of activities you can do when at Le Mas & Le Mazet. We are more than happy to advise you on routes, rentals and directions, to make bookings for you, and to provide you with maps.

Gentle countryside walks: enjoy country walks right on your doorstep, either through woodland and across fields or along the country lanes to the medieval village of Montferrand de Perigord (20 mins away) or to the 12th Century church at Sainte Croix (20 mins away). There are walks all around, for instance from Monpazier to the megaliths.

Hiking trails: there are nearby trails to suit everyone, from the Grand Randonnées such as GR36 and GR6, to circular walks (5km to 40km) around Monpazier which are signposted.

Bike hire: if you're not bringing your own bike, they can be hired from BikeHireDirect through us, who bring and collect the bikes/helmets/locks etc. to and from the property, giving a great service. We get a small commission which will be passed on to you.

Cycling: the property is just off cycle route 26, a 70km loop to Monpazier, Cadouin and back. There are many other cycle routes nearby bringing you to the hidden gems of the Dordogne, away from the tourists.

Canoeing: you can rent canoes (1 to 4 people) in different locations, in the Dordogne or Vézère valleys. The rental company will meet you at the end with a minibus to bring you back to the start. Canoeing is a fantastic way of experiencing the beauty and grandeur of nature and the châteaux along the valleys.

Swimming in the river: you can swim in the Dordogne river at Le Buisson (25 mins drive) where there is a 800m-long, supervised beach.

Barge rides: you can take a barge along the Dordogne with châteaux perched high above you, from either Beynac or La Roque Gageac. Alternatively you can hop on a barge in Bergerac and hope to see herons, kites, kingfishers, cormorants, coypus and turtles.

Horseback riding: local equestrian centres offer the opportunity to go horse riding - you might even imagine yourself as a Knight Templar in the Middle Ages!

Golf: there are several golf clubs where you can play: Lolivarie golf club (30 mins drive); Château les Merles (30 mins); and La Marterie (50 mins).

Markets: there are local markets in Beaumont on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and in Monpazier on Thursdays. There are extra markets in the mushroom and truffle season, and night markets in the summer.

Wine tours: there are wine routes, vineyards to visit and events. Everything you could possibly need to enjoy the great wines grown around Bergerac.

Concerts and festivities: there are regular concerts and festivities, often linked to Saints' days. We will let you know what's on the period that you're staying.

Night time guided tours by torchlight: in the summer, from around 9pm, take a torchlight guided tour in Monpazier, Beaumont du Périgord and Cadouin. Guided tours during the day are also on offer.

Prehistoric sites: more than 50 caves and rock shelters, traces of settlement, burial places have been discovered in the Perigord. You can visit the National Prehistorical Museum in Les Eyzies, numerous caves and old settlements and of course the cave paintings at Lascaux.

Châteaux: there are reported to be 1001 châteaux in the Dordogne! The highlights are Biron, Beynac, Castelnaud with activities based on its collection of weaponary, and Milandes - the home of Josephine Baker which now hosts falconery in its gardens.

Gardens: there are two magical gardens worth visiting, if you have the time: the classical Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac and the overhanging gardens of Marqueyssac.

Natural caves: the caves of Maxange (18km) are exceptional because of size and quality of their stalactites and stalagmites, and the eccentric cyrstallised panels which are remarkable.

Hot air ballooning: Montgolfière du Périgord just outside La Roque-Gageac (40km) arranges flights.
