Balmat Cottage Chamonix

Bedrooms 2
Space 753 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Bedrooms 3, Bathrooms 2, Sleeps 6

Balmat Cottage is a quaint and cozy, two-bedroom Chamonix house available for weekly holiday rental.

The building is on the edge of town and built from traditional stone and wood in one of the valley’s oldest buildings. Balmat Cottage is part of the original home of Jacques Balmat, the first man to climb Mont Blanc.

Balmat Cottage is close to the highway, so access is easy even in snowy conditions and the ski bus stops 100m from the front door and will take you to every lift in the valley.

Being part of an old restored building, Balmat Cottage is quirky and engaging in its look and design, something both the layout and furnishings only add too. It is far from ‘just another’ alpine ski apartment. Instead you have the feeling you are staying in a genuine piece of alpine history, which in many ways you are.

Built around the building’s central stairwell, the ground-floor is open plan and split into three areas: the kitchen, living and dining room.

The kitchen has a fully-equipped, modern kitchen with a four ring induction hob, a full-size oven, dishwasher, washing machine and plenty of crockery and utensils.

The dining room is reached either through a doorway and the dining table seats six people. The doorway allows you step directly from the kitchen into the dining room and serve dinner without having to walk through the living room.

The living room has a large sofa that converts in to a comfortable bed for two people, an open fire place next to a fire place, and a low level coffee table making it a lovely place to relax in the evening and watch a movie or just the crackling flames. Logs are supplied.

The toilet is tucked away under the stairwell.

Upstairs lie two bedrooms, both of which can be doubles or twins, one of which contains a shower and the other a bath, allowing you to shower or bath in the privacy of your own bedroom.

Beautiful charming cottage, very approachable owners who willing let us arrive early and stay late

  • 4 of 5

Easy accessible accommodation for skiing in Chaminox. Charming cottage. More suited to 4 adults or a family with younger children up to 6, due to limited space inside.

Charming and definitely quirky

  • 4 of 5

The cottage has a very charming ground floor which definitely shows the history of the place. The upstairs bedrooms are a little awkward but manageable. The layout is quirky for sure with a shower in one bedroom and a bathtub and sink in the other bedroom. The ceiling is quite low and for taller people you end up stooping a lot to get around the upstairs. The stairs are quite steep and narrow and with the toilet downstairs, navigating at night is troublesome especially since the stairwell light was out while we were there. Hauling luggage up and down takes a little work. The closet rack and shelves were quite flimsy and a surprise since such care was taken with furniture downstairs. Also, there is a washing machine but no dryer so be prepared to drape clothes around the cottage to dry.

Overall we did enjoy the historic feel of the cottage as well as the location. This probably isn't the right place if you are physically challenged.

Comfortable with all the amenities from home.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Balmat Chalet. It is situated on the edge of the more touristy parts of town. We found it had easy access to a few hikes in the area and downtown was a simple stroll down the street. Groceries and bakery were close by. The management company was very accommodating and provided everything we needed to travel with a toddler. Happy to recommend this place any friend travelling to Chamonix. Thanks for a nice stay, Bob.

Great chalet , lovely holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Balmat Cottage (me + 2 friends) at the beginning of March. We had a lovely time here and are happy to go back or recommend to others.

The booking process was easy and safe with several options offered to us in terms of payment methods. We booked through this site in the end as it seemed the safest and easiest.

The management team were very helpful before and during our stay and check-in was very easy. We could arrive at any time of day or night as there are keys at the cottage!

The decor is gorgeous – rustic / alpine, but with a modern twist -  and the rooms are very comfortable.  WiFi was free and unlimited and it was easy for us to connect our laptops to the TV - we had Netflix and French TV.

We were walking in and out of town at night and it was fine, but the bus stop is outside anyway.

We’ll be back in Chamonix again and would definitely book Balmat Cottage again.

Great stay in comfortable and cosy cotttage

  • 5 of 5

My son and I were really pleased with the cottage. It was well appointed and really cosy with the fire. We felt that staying in and cooking a decent meal was easy. Yet we also found walking into Chamonix for a night out no problem at all.

The cottage is well positioned. You can easily drive to St Gervais or Les Houches, or the other way to the Chamonix resorts. We did both. We had driven from the UK so had a car but there was also a bus stop just opposite the cottage. We never had a problem parking and there was a supermarket and bakery within 5 mins. Overall we felt the accommodation was perfect for us and competitively priced. If you are after your own self catering chalet a little away from the crowds I would definitely give this one a try! Best wishes Chris.
