4 bedroom well equipped character cottage

OPEN ALL YEAR Smugglers is a pretty and cosy early Victorian Cottage in the centre of Ventnor, sleeping 7 people comfortably, plus a cot if required. There is a large double bedroom with a single room attached and a double room with a twin room attached. Both doubles have king sized pocket sprung beds. There is a shower room, and a family bathroom fitted with a toilet, basin & bath with shower attachment. Downstairs there is a comfortable living room with a wood burning stove, leading to the dining room and newly fitted kitchen. The courtyard garden has seating area as well as a quirky outside toilet! At the side of the cottage is a useful covered passageway that lends itself perfectly to storage of pushchairs, bicycles, Wellington boots, kayaks and surfboards. The double doors open onto the road for easy loading and unloading. There is no parking at the property, however there are two car parks and free roadside parking which is less than 5 minutes walk away. Buses run every half hour through the day from a bus stop moments from the cottage (outside Boots in the High Street) and hourly through the night.

We regret that, due to the steepness of Tulse Hill and the roads around Ventnor, the property is not suitable for the infirm.

Smugglers is in the centre of the lovely seaside town of Ventnor. Moments from the high street, it is a short walk to Ventnor's restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, as well as the beach and the Esplanade. The pretty villages of Bonchurch, Niton and Shanklin are also close by. Ventnor golf course is less than 1.5 miles away, with the most stunning views across glorious countryside to the sea. Only a short drive away is Queen Victoria's beloved home Osborne House, the historic Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle as well as family attractions like Blackgang Chine and the Donkey Sanctuary. The wilder beaches to the west offer diving, paragliding, surfing and kayaking. For walkers, there are over 500 miles of very well signposted footpaths on the Island, more per square mile than any other English county! It is not far to The Needles and Alum Bay, Tennyson Down, Newtown Nature Reserve and much more. Yarmouth and Cowes are no more than 30 minutes by car, for those who love their sailing.

Alun and Sheelagh both hail from Wales, Sheelagh from Aberystwyth, Alun from Newport. We have both lived abroad during our working lives but wanted a base back in the UK that we could return to whenever we had a spare weekend. We fell in love with the Isle of Wight when visiting relatives there. Our goal, in sharing Smugglers with guests is to provide a home-from-home. A place where you can immediately relax, feel at home, and start your holiday. We hope to have you as our guests and look forward to meeting you.

Why Alun & Sheelagh Crewe chose Isle of Wight

We spent a long time looking for our perfect getaway retreat on the Isle of Wight. We had homed in on Vetnor as one of our favourite places to be. The strong community feeling and lively town centre, the beauty of the beach and the famous 'microclimate' that promotes almost tropical weather and the friendly welcome in every pub and restuarant we entered. All of these things led us to focus our search in Ventnor. We looked at, literally, dozens of houses before falling in love with 'Smugglers'. It's character and homely feel together with being on a quiet street yet only a few yards from the town centre made it an obvious choice. The previous owners, Matt and Sally Clark, had sepnt a lot of time restoring and improving the cottage with high-quality modern appliances and decor that didn't detract from the 200 year-old character. It's a philosophy we intend to continue.

What makes this cottage unique

Smugglers is a 4-bedroomed cottage only 50 metres from the town centre and 400 metres from the beach, yet in the very quiet street of Tulse Hill. It was dubbed 'Smugglers' because of the strange trap door in the back bedroom which we imagine was used when the Revenue Men came to call. It has a private enclosed rear garden with patio and chairs for outdoor dining and cozy log-burning fire for cool evenings. The kitchen is well-equipped with high-quality appliances and there are games, DVDs, Freesat and high-speed wireless internet connection for your entertainment. The central position means that the nearest restaurant (Foggs) is only 30m away and the nearest pub (The Crab and Lobster) only 100m.

Enjoyable stay

Enjoyable stay. We appreciated the little welcome pack upon arrival. The cottage was close to the high street, groceries and parking (we purchased a 4 day permit which allowed us to park at most other car parks on the island). Cottage was well equipped and very clean throughout. Good Internet for the kids! We were a little disappointed at not being able to bbq on one of the sunny days, and also found the shower a little small with very little pressure. Enjoyed Spyglass on the Esplanade but had terrible fish and chips from Ventnor Haven Fishery (all batter and rocks for chips). Overall, a great time was enjoyed by all.

We're investigating supplying a gas barbecue as the previous charcoal one caused us problems with the time between changovers in the summer. Sorry this wasn't available for your stay. Excellent location. Everyone loved the cottage. Facilities great.

All my family loved the cottage. And its situation was excellent, shops very close beach 10 min walk there 15 back. Highly recommended. Also really recommend

the weekly parking pass. Could use all over the island without having to find change or calling up all the time.

Cracking house and location 5 stars

As recently stayed here for 4 nights and was not disappointed lovely house and perfect location for shops pubs and eateries.The lovely walk down to the promenade with a lovely visit to the spyglass inn and u are sorted for the day .... great food with large portions and good choice of beers etc would highly recommend.

Well equipped and great location

We really enjoyed our stay here. Very friendly and responsive owners. Spacious house n well equipped kitchen with a nice yard.

The only thing is no parking in front of house but it wasn't far from house. Overall very good house and would love to be back here again.

Very comfortable cottage fully equipped. Great location, handy for shops and beach. We paid for a car park permit which was well worth it as you can park in most car parks on the island. Recommended+++
