Rural area par excellence, in the north of the place are less than a dozen houses of permanent housing, which translates into silence and privacy to enjoy the stunning views of the islet of Lagoinhas and the background, on favorable days, sight the island of St. Miguel. On the hill stands the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, the first temple built in the Azores in honor of Our Lady (after the apparitions in Lourdes, France, in 1858), which stands out for being the only chapel in the archipelago with portal facing north. The place North is situated 6 km, approximately the Bay of St. Lawrence, the major symbol of the island of Santa Maria, and 4 km from the center of the parish of Santa Barbara.

In total the archipelago has 30 breeding bird species but, because of its central position in the Atlantic Ocean, there is the observation of migratory birds from the American and Eurasian continents. The Azores have the most important populations of Cory's Shearwaters, Diomedia Calonectris borealis, and terns, pink, roseate tern, worldwide. Among the various species that can be seen in Santa Maria, Santa Maria Estrelinha of Regulus Regulus sanctae mariae is the most popular. The Estrelinha of Santa Maria is the smallest bird in Europe and is marked in the Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal as "critically endangered", and therefore vulnerable.
One of the most outstanding cultural activities of the Azores (although island of peculiarities to the island) are the celebrations of the Holy Spirit. In Santa Maria, the so-called "Empires" in honor of the Holy Spirit are freely distributed the "soup" cooked according to ancient traditions. In this festival there are corners and own rituals worthy of their participation. Empires are held almost every Sunday of Pentecost (seventh Sunday after Easter) and the end of August, and take place in different maids of the island, small rooms which serves the soup to all the people who dare to delighted by this Mariense tradition.
