About the property

3 bedroom, 3 bathroom with gorgeous views of hills and valley.

You will love our holiday cottage, set in a small hamlet 1/4 mile (on foot) from Garrigill village centre. The whole family were involved in converting an old derelict barn into an award winning 4* cottage. We were able to make it cosy, comfortable, 'a home from home', while keeping some of the historic features of what we now know was an old bastle house. This listing is for a three night weekend or four night midweek break.

When you arrive you will find tea and coffee and milk so you can have a cuppa after your journey, plus some biscuits for you and some for your dog if you are bringing one.

The cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Loaning Head, close to Garrigill village. It is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which features a landscape shaped by nature and by man. From the comfort of the cottage you will see some of the highest fells in the North Pennines, part of the South Tyne valley, farmland and farm animals. You will see miles and miles of hand built dry stone walls, and depending on the time of year you visit you could see a variety of wildlife just a stones throw from the cottage eg red squirrels, deer, hares etc. We have our own hens which can be seen from the cottage windows.

We recommend a walk to Ashgill force, finishing off with a pint or a cuppa in the George and Dragon inn. The post office and general store in Garrigill is open most days too.

Alston has two small supermarkets, two petrol stations, wholefood shop ( you must try their cheeses) Moody Baker, outdoor shop and gift shops, plus 4 pubs, five cafes, two hotels. The streets are cobbled and many tiny lanes can be found leading off the main street. The ITV version of Oliver was filmed in Alston.

The nearest private swimming pool, sauna and hot tub for hire is at Melmerby. This can be booked by the hour for exclusive use. (The Tower house pool). Lots of our guests have used it and recommend it as an addition to the holiday.

Within five miles of the cottage there are three villages with a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Garrigill village has a Post office/general store, pub which serves excellent real ales, an artists studio and a plant nursery.

On the ground floor of the cottage is an open plan kitchen/living/dining room with vaulted ceiling and French doors which open onto the patio and the garden. Also on the ground floor is a bathroom with shower over the bath and a ground floor double or twin bedroom. There is also a boot/drying room just inside the front door. Upstairs is a twin bedroom with adjoining shower room and a double bedroom with en suite shower room. All towels and bed linen are included in cost plus all heating, and firewood for the wood burner. Isaac's Byre is cosy all year round: heated by a ground source heat pump, with the addition of a wood burning stove for those who like to curl up in front of a real fire.

The kitchen is very well equipped and features a range cooker.

About The Owner

We live next door to the cottage so can be at hand should you need us and as unobtrusive as you want too. Our Labrador retriever may poke her nose through the gate to say 'Hi' and our hens can be seen in the garden behind the cottage garden.

In 1994 we purchased a derelict barn attached to our home and began work on converting it back into a cottage in 2009, completing it in 2011. The whole family helped and made a very good job of it.

During the renovation work we had a visit from an architectural archaeologist who was able to tell us that the cottage is the oldest house in the hamlet and was previously a bastle house or fortified farmhouse. Our home was built in 1692 and the cottage was built before it. We don't have a date stone visible.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1994

Gepflegt, gemütlich und in ruhiger Umgebung

Ein schoenes und sauberes Cottage in ländlicher Umgebung. Wunderschöne Aussicht in die Hügeln. Ein perfekter Platz um zur Ruhe zu kommen. Das Cottage ist gut ausgerüstet mit allem was nötig ist um entspannende Ferien zu haben. Die Vermieter sind freundlich und erreichbar. Es ist möglich um in der Umgebung zu wandern und verschillende Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besuchen. Bei schlechtem Wetten kann man in den Lake District oder an die Ostküste ausweichen. Wir kommen gerne noch einmal zurück !
