We stayed in Westerly House over the Christmas period. The house was spotless when we arrived and all the little touches like a Christmas Tree in the sitting room, toilet rolls in all the bathrooms, kitchen roll in the kitchen and dishwasher tablets under the sink make this rental stand out from any others we have been to. The property is spacious and comfortable and we felt like our holiday had started from the moment we walked in. Having not been to Bude for some years, we turned to Nick Compton for advice on where to eat, particularly for Christmas day. Nick went above and beyond in finding places that were open and, I have to say, we ate very well indeed! It was lovely to be able to stroll to the beach or into town or indeed to a a number of restaurants. A particular favourite was The Olive Tree by the canal. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property and Elite West Holidays to any of our friends and have already booked a repeat trip. Elite West give some invaluable information on the website regarding Bude but Nick also responds personally to all emails and I ended up feeling I had made a friend. Thanks Nick and we are looking forward to our next visit in March.
The house is very impressive and in a great location on Downs View, looking over the lovely Bude and North Cornwall golf course. It is also within easy reach of Crooklets Beach, just a leisurely five minutes walk away, or an easy stroll to the town (15 to 20 minutes) or Summerleaze Beach (a similar time, unless you walk around at low tide from Crooklets and then it is much quicker).
The house easily and comfortably accommodated our extended family group and we had a room to spare! The quality of the house, its fixtures, fittings and furnishings were much better than we have experienced in the past and it is a techies dream! It was also very well provisioned with herbs, spices, oils and all manner of other things that you might need when preparing a meal in the fantastic kitchen.
Really there is very little to say against the property, other than the WIFI seems to have been set up in such a way that you needed to reconnect every time that your phone (or device) had been in sleep mode. Also, it would have been useful to be provided with a little more detail as to how recycling for the house is collected (we ended up heading to a local bottle bank).
But overall, the arrival instructions provided by Nick (including his excellent booking confirmation letter which gave many great hints and tips) was second to none.
We would highly recommend this house for family get aways, or for groups of friends and we hope to have the opportunity to return one day.
My sister and I stayed at Westerly House for three weeks – we were the first lucky people to try the place out after a major refurbishment. It was recommended to us by our good friend Nick Compton at Elite West Holidays, and as usual his recommendation was faultless.
Here are three reasons why:
Firstly, location. Westerly House is perfectly situated for anyone coming to Bude to be close to the sea – you can see and even hear it from your bedroom window. But if you come to Bude for the golf or the shops, they are all just a stroll away too.
Second, Westerly House is BIG. And I mean much bigger than any photos suggest. It is like a TARDIS. Spacious bedrooms. The biggest open plan kitchen and dining area we’ve ever seen. And a choice of not one but three lounge areas each one ideal for varying activities from reading books to playing games to watching TV.
Which leads me to the third plus point: the mod cons. Being newly renovated to the highest standard means you’ve got myriad lighting choices to create the perfect ambiance, all while watching movies on giant flatscreen TVs or listening to your own music on the cool SONOS sound system. WI-FI is quick and reliable wherever you are. And the cooking appliances are state of the art. Our only issue was having to learn how to use some of them, which was a small price to pay.
In summary, the owner has done a truly marvellous job. Everywhere you look in Westerly House you can see the attention to detail and feel the love and care that went into creating what we consider to be the finest holiday home in Bude. And we have been staying in some of the finest places in and around Bude for well over a decade.
Bude offers good shopping, a good array of restaurants and pubs. Splash swimming pool has a flume and health suite, and there is a leisure complex for bowling and indoor play. Boats can be hired on Bude canal and there is windsurfing, sailing, kayaking (either just hire or book lessons) at Lower Tamar Lake. We have an arrangement with the local Links course, Bude and North Cornwall, for our guests and there are good courses at nearby Holsworthy, St Enedoc and the Jack Nicklaus designed St Mellion. Widemouth Bay is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the area and we can arrange lessons for beginners and improver's. Bude has two superb beaches, Summerleaze and Crooklets, both ideal for bathing and surfing and Bude has one of the few remaining sea pools in the country which is perfect for youngsters when the waves are a little fierce. Lifeguards patrol most beaches and the pool throughout the summer months. There are outdoor pursuit centres, tennis, squash, horse riding and more
