About J Fonseca

I was born and grew up in this area. I have worked here all my life as a Solicitor until retirement 5 years ago. Clock cottage forms part of but is seperate from our small 75 acre farm and has its own lawned and walled area with lovely views over the Graig Hill to the northwest. We brought up our four children here and it has been a wonderful family home to which they are all drawn in spite of having grown up and married and they bring their children back here as often as they are able. I think that this part of the World is one of the most beautiful and everytime that I return here from other parts of the World I consider myself very blest and lucky to live here. We are all keen walkers and cyclists and spend a lot of our leisure time walking and cycling throughout the area. We are very close to Offas Dyke path and to White Castle and one can walk 'The Three Castles 'walk from here, about twenty miles taking in White, Grosmont and Skenfrith Castles in a large circular walk or do it over a couple of days in sections.

J Fonseca purchased this cottage in 1986

Why J Fonseca chose Abergavenny

It is very pretty, cosy, light and airy and convenient to so many local attractions. It has been beautifully refurbished and is in a very beautiful rural location. Abergavenny hosts the National Eistedfodd in 2016 and Hay Festival, Brecon Jazz, Abergavenny Food Festival are all within easy distance. We are only 40 miles or an easy train Journey of 40 minutes from Cardiff which has a very good shopping centre and a wonderful museum and Art gallery. There are numerous good restaurants nearby including, The Walnut tree, The Crown at Whitebrook, The Bell at Skenfrith, The 1860, The Hardwick as well as good hotel and Pub restaurants such as The Angel in Abergavenny,The Bear in Crickhowell, The Skirrid Mountain Inn, supposedly the oldest Pub in Wales, and our very own local, The Hunters Moon. Crickhowell hosts a Literary and Walking Festival and is within 30 minutes drive.

What makes this cottage unique

The Cottage is spacious and light and has a very nice feel to it. It is an easy living space.

Clock Cottage was the absolutely perfect bolt hole for a two day get away - we cannot recommend it highly enough and can't wait to return. Comfy bed, massive bath, huge shower, toasty woodburner, glorious views and starry skies with only the sound of little lambs and jackdaws at twilight. Fabulous walks to be had straight from the house - a round walk to White Castle is about 3 hours - and Skerrig Fawr is only a short drive away. Abergavenny has a fabulous Waitrose - and a great wool shop for the keen knitter! Julian and Clarissa were the perfect hosts - present yet unobtrusive. There was a really excellent welcome pack of essentials and the bottle of champagne for the birthday boy was such a generous and thoughtful gift. The perfect antidote to the hurly burly of life.

Peaceful, comfortable, relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a wonderful weekend at the cottage and couldn't fault anything - a beautifully presented property. The owner, Julian, was so helpful and generous with his hospitality - gorgeous apple juice! And even though the weather was pretty awful, we still managed a walk around the local area and were awestruck by the silence - so refreshing! Planning to return in the spring or summer when the weather should be a little drier (hopefully!)

Great set up. Peaceful & remote with bird song in the morning & cattle settling in the distance of the evening. The sound of rural Wales.

A little disappointed in local restaurant choice (the Hardwick).

Lovely, warm and relaxing stay in peaceful countryside

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay. I commented whilst there that it's one of the best cottages we have stayed in. The kitchen was so well equipped to cook anything we liked and even had a cake tin to make a birthday cake.

The log burner made it so cosy.

The bed was comfy making it hard to get up in the morning but then it was nice to be up and see the beautiful countryside.

A lovely huge bath and shower which were working well and nice and warm.

The owner Julian was so welcoming and helpful. He didn't intrude but was there if we needed anything.

I would love to stay again and do more exploring of the area.
