Historic Home - Sterling Harbor - Water Views, Walk to Village

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 14 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms (sleeps 5), 2 full baths

Located in the historic district of Greenport, the house (c. 1780) is nestled on peaceful Sterling Harbor, within a 5-minute walk to the maritime village.

The house has been renovated, with additions and an open flow to the spacious rooms, so that its architectural character remains intact. Original wood-beamed ceilings, wide floorboards, and an eclectic mix of antiques, Chinese and modern furniture, and folk art, all lend charm and character to the interior.

The seven-room house has three bedrooms -- master bedroom with fireplace on the 1st floor and two bedrooms on the 2nd floor (one large bedroom with a queen-size bed and the other a single); two full baths; country kitchen, renovated with state-of-the-art appliances; large, gracious dining room; foyer/study/library with fireplace and small daybed; and beautiful, airy sunroom.

The sunroom opens to the front porch and deck with pergola and flowering vines, perfect for relaxing or entertaining while offering water views. The kitchen leads to the side yard with arbor and gardens, patio for casual dining, water views, and outdoor shower.

With ample front, side, and back yards, this property (.27 acre) combines privacy and a country feel on one of the village's most desirable and quiet streets. The location provides easy access by foot or bike to all village amenities: gourmet shops, IGA supermarket, Alice's fish market, cafes, bakery, wine and raw bars, delis, a variety of restaurants (from family to upscale), movie theater, carousel, antique shops, art galleries, marinas, liquor stores, pharmacy, marine supply stores, bookstore, and banks/ATMs.

White sand and pebble beaches on Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay are within walking, biking, or driving distance from the house. Boat slips can be rented on the waterfront across the street while a public dock at the end of the street is used for launching small boats and kayaks in Sterling Basin.

A 2-hour drive from New York City, Greenport is also served by train (LIRR), private bus (Hampton Jitney), and the North Ferry (to Shelter Island, the Hamptons, and Montauk), with all transportation in walking distance of the house. The Cross Sound Ferry to New London is 8 miles away at Orient Point.

Enjoy boating, sailing, fishing, swimming, tennis (public courts in all towns), cycling, golf (Island's End Golf and Country Club), concerts, theater, wine-tasting at the local vineyards, nature preserves, birding, summer festivals, country fairs, auctions, house-and-garden tours, art openings, and the vibrant night life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife has repeatedly asked me and I have avoided writing this review of Ellen’s house in Greenport. If you knew of a lovely house on a quiet street (no thru traffic) with a charming North Fork history and the conveniences of modern living (sleeps five and a baby and has lots of indoor and outdoor space), is a few feet from a harbor inlet, a few yards from a place to catch fish, a few minutes stroll from great coffee and pastry, ice cream, quaint restaurants and a charming village and owned and rented by a fair and thoughtful women, would you want any one else to know about it? I didn’t. Check out Ellen’s place, but please leave me a few weeks each summer so that I can enjoy it again. Jay

Two weeks in this beautiful but spacious cottage flew by. Breakfast each morning on the deck, under the pergola, with a view of the inlet; nights in a four-poster bed; swordfish on the gas grill and dinners prepared in the fully equipped country kitchen; plenty of room for visiting adult children in the two extra bedrooms; a house full of light, charm, and tchotchkes from the owner's travels. The house is on a quiet street a 10-minute stroll along similarly sleepy streets to Greenport's bustling business district, restaurants, movie theater. You're not far from beaches, gorgeous bike rides, vineyards, and just 10 minutes from Shelter Island. Moreover, Greenport itself is a quaint haven of an historic whaling village, with not a Starbucks or fast-food franchise in sight. An ideal escape.

Owner's Response: It's always nice to rent to people who love the house and appreciate its Caribbean charm. The couple was also one of the best and most considerate tenants to occupy the house who took advantage of all this quiet enclave and maritime village have to offer.

Charming home in great location!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this incredibly charming home for the month of August last year. It's nestled on a very quiet road with beautiful harbor views and is a few minutes walk from all the activities and amenites of Greenport village. The home is very spacious and has great outdoor living/dining spaces. We most definitely enjoyed our time her and would highly recommend it.
