Chalet Marmotte is a 5 bed family-friendly ski chalet with an exceptionally large enclosed garden and a cinema/playroom in a stunning setting in Saint Gervais Les Bains that's perfect for a winter or summer mountain holiday for two families or a group.
It's a traditional Savoyard-style chalet but with modern British-style comforts for all ages: king-size beds with memory foam mattresses & Egyptian cotton linen, fully equipped kitchen (everything from a teapot to champagne glasses as well as essentials like a dishwasher), WIFI and wireless music speakers, cinema room with large HD curved TV, DVD player & Playstation 3, a trampoline in the garden and lots of Lego and other toys.
The chalet is over 3 floors and has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a kitchen, 2 reception rooms and a boot room area.
The main floor is accessed by steps from the outside. The front door opens into a large hallway. Half of this floor is the main room which has windows on three sides of it and opens onto a full length balcony/terrace. There is a large dining table that can seat 10 at one end and sofas and armchairs the other end.
The chalet has a separate and good-sized fully-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave. There is also a large bathroom with a bath and toilet on this floor, plus plenty of space in the large hallway for coats and shoes.
The top floor has 4 bedrooms: two large, almost identical, double bedrooms with king-size beds and balconies, plus two further rooms each containing a set of bunk beds. The larger bunk room also has cot bed that can be set up as a sofa when not needed. There is a bathroom with toilet and shower on this floor too.
On the lower level there is a garden entrance for coming in from the slopes and a large seating area for putting on ski boots. Beyond this is a large cinema/playroom room with seating for 10 or more and games to keep the younger guests amused. The fifth bedroom and third bath room are on this floor. This double room is smaller than those upstairs but has the advantage of its own bathroom.
For the children:
The chalet is fully equipped for babies and toddlers - stair-gates, sterilizer, baby weaning equipment, high chairs, changing mat, a cot bed with bedding and grobags, car seats and baby backpacks are all available. Please ask if there is anything in particular you want as I am sure we have it somewhere.
We can recommend various childcare options - local British nannies or the French slope-side nursery which our children have been to.
The chalet is also suitable for school-aged children with ample games, a Playstation with some games and one controller, cinema room with a large DVD collection and a trampoline in the garden. There is lots to explore in the garden including a small, very shallow stream.
For the grown-ups:
You can expect to sleep as well or better than you do at home on the incredibly comfortable Tempur memory foam king size mattresses and 3000 thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen.
The chalet is set up use your own devices: WIFI and wireless speakers provided.
If you like cooking, the kitchen is fully equipped with everything from woks and chop sticks, to cake trays and biscuit cutters, to fondues and cheese boards, but if you'd rather not cook, we can recommend a local British chef and lots of local restaurants.
ABOUT THE SKIING:
Chalet Marmotte has easy access to the Evasion ski area (third largest ski area in France) - its a 5 minute drive to free carpark at the base of the Bettex gondola in Saint Gervais, or there is a ski bus stop outside the house.
The skiing is suitable for all levels and there are restaurants on the mountain accessible to all abilities.
The ESF ski lessons are available morning or afternoons for children and you can also extend your time on the slopes by booking them into the garderie for the lunch time period.
The Saint Gervais ski area connects with Megeve.
Les Contamines can also be reached in 15 minutes as is also covered by the Evasion lift pass. Les Contamines is higher and nearer to Mont Blanc, so often gets better snow conditions.
Chamonix is only a 25 minute drive away and other resorts like Flaine, Morzine and Courmeyour are possible for day trips.
You can buy a ski pass for the entire Evasion area, including Les Contamines and Megeve, or for smaller areas such as St Gervias. There are also splits for number of weeks or days.
Lift passes can be purchased online at:
http://www.ski-saintgervais.com/ or http://netpass.lescontamines.net/
There’s a great independent ski hire shop, Unlimited Sports in St Gervais, on the right as you come into the town from the chalet. Their website is: http://unlimited-saintgervais.com/#
There are several other options including one that is the top of Bettex that will allow you to leave kit up there, but do note even if they have the same name, they are all franchises and you can't rent kit from one and take it back to another.
ABOUT THE CYCLING:
Chalet Marmotte is in the Haute Alpes and is a great base for both road biking and mountain biking. There is ample storage in the chalet for bikes and mountain bikes can be rented in Les Contamines There is a bike shop in Le Fayet (mainly mountain bikes) and a bigger cycle shop in Sallanches.
There is excellent road cycling straight from the chalet. The Bettex climb featured in the 2015 Dauphines and a short cycle to Megeve leads to numerous well known (and less familiar) routes. The Col de Aravis and Col de Les Saises are about an hour from the chalet. Beyond these are climbs such as the tour regular Col de Colombiere and onwards towards Annecy.
Heading down to the valley floor you can climb towards Passey and the ski resorts around Flaine. You can also head towards Morzine and the south side of Lake Geneva.
Most of these routes are well signposted and have cafes on the way. Many of the ski resorts have restaurants at the top which can be a welcome relief.
There is mountain biking of all standards in the area, from gentle tracks along the Chamonix valley floor to very serious downhill biking through forests around a number of towns from St Gervais to Morzine and Les Gets (about 40 mins drive away) to Chamonix itself.
Climbing, hiking, flying, and any number of other crazy adrenaline-inducing sports.
PLACES TO VISIT:
There are a host of places to visit and things to see in the area. There is a new swimming pool and sports centre in St Gervais, 1 mile from the chalet with plenty of parking outside. Be aware that most French swimming pools do not allow swimming shorts and insist on proper swimming trunks and these are no exceptions. St Gervais also has an ice rink and number of walking trails based around the gorge and routes towards Mt Blanc. There is also a playground in the town square and a number of events and exhibitions organized all year round.
The Mont Blanc Tramway runs in summer and winter from Le Fayet lower down the valley, to Saint Gervais and then all the way up to Nid d’Aigle at 2380m. Take this in winter to go skiing in Les Houches or in summer for a splendid view of the Bionnassay glacier.
There is a large park/activity centre in the woods south of Les Contamines. This includes aerial ropeways, horse riding, boating and hiking. Les Contamines also has a children's play area.
Le Fayet has a large park, including a children’s playground, in the grounds of the thermal spa. There is also an indoor pool and a number of other outdoor activities, depending on the time of year.
The thermal spa there is also a must do - you can get 3 hr pass (day or evening) and relax in the saunas, steam rooms and outdoor thermal spa water hot tubs.
Further afield, Chamonix has plenty of things to see and do. The Alpine animal park is well worth a visit (though be prepared to walk and it isn’t ideal for buggies) and has spectacular views of Mt Blanc.
There are hiking routes everywhere in the Chamonix valley and you can get up to the high alpine via cable cars from Chamonix or Argentiere.
You can visit Italy for the day through the Mt Blanc tunnel, or Annecy is less than an hour’s drive away.
We met skiing in the French Alps and skied lots in North America before having children. We returned to the haute-alps when our son Alec was 6 months old and have been every year since and found Saint Gervais to be a particularly good family friendly ski destination. We decided to buy a chalet here when we discovered we almost like it more here in the summer as there is so much to do here with the children (and of course great cycling for Alastair).
We hope you will enjoy Chalet Marmotte and Saint Gervais area as much as we do.
Amanda, Alastair, Alec and Sophie.
Amanda & Alastair Borthwick purchased this chalet in 2015
We chose this chalet for our own family holidays as we like the layout and facilities (children's bedrooms near the adults, a cinema/playroom downstairs and the great sized and bright kitchen, bathrooms on every floor and stairs that are not lethal), but we were really struck by the garden - its like having your own woodland to explore with a stream at the end.
Views from the top of a mountain would have been fantastic but having stayed in some ourselves, we decided the daily ordeal of driving up steep and winding roads in bad snow conditions wasn't worth it and prefer being on the main (and snowploughed) route, and do still get great views from the chalet including one of Mont Blanc!
- Separate cinema/play room
- Easy access in snowy conditions
- Huge garden, woodland and stream
- Luxury mattresses and fully equipped kitchen
- Family friendly with baby and toddler equipment and toys (more than just a cot and highchair!) We can provide stair gates, changing mat, weaning equipment, back packs, a buggy, car seats, toys and books. All the things you'd rather not have to carry through the airport as well as children and skis!
We stayed in this chalet in February and had w lovely experience. The chalet itself is very spacious, with ample furniture, plenty of bathrooms. Which was great as there were quite a few of us. The water supply was brilliant, even with multiple people showering at the same time. It is in a great location, not too far from the main skiing resort but out the way enough for some nice chilled time and peace and quiet. I would highly recommend this chalet and hope to visit again next year!
Stayed at the chalet for 6 nights during a ski trip with some friends. It was very warm and cosy which was great to get back to after a long day of skiing! Had everything we needed and was in a brilliant location - especially for walking into town and getting some pastries!
Spent a week here for a skiing holiday, the chalet was amazing! A short drive (or free shuttle bus) to the St Gervais gondola made it easy to get to the ski slopes in the morning (snow doesn't appear to grind things to a halt abroad), and the chalet was nice and warm in the evenings, despite the negative outside temperatures.
We only ate out once, as the kitchen was fully stocked with equipment, and we were able to go to the supermarket for ingredients and cook our own meals in the chalet.
The beds were perfect - had a better night's sleep than I normally have at home (which was much needed after the last day of a week's skiing!)
We had the most wonderful stay in this beautiful chalet, and will definitely return. We went to the Ice Spa which was close by as was the attractions of the village (grocery store, lovely restaurants, boulangerie etc). Also really liked driving to the ski lift and being able to park right there!
Had an amazing time, great location for skiing and cycling. Loads of space, clean and friendly owners :) will stay again!!
Can't tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at Chalet Marmotte. We had a brilliant family holiday for ten and everyone had a simply fantastic time in this lovely home.
It's a wonderful family chalet ideally located for both Saint Gervais and Les Contamines ski fields. The facilities were superb and luxurious. Beds were so comfortable - especially welcome after a hard day's skiing! We had a large group and were amazed at how spacious the chalet was, we never felt cramped and were always comfortable, which is a real feat.
The chalet was very well maintained and the kitchen was extremely well-appointed, perfect for cooking large enough meals for our group.
We were lucky enough to have good snowfalls so the kids (and adults!) had great fun in the backyard on the trampoline. Even the 20cm of snow we received didn't stop us accessing the roads which were cleared by snowploughs.
The managers were also able to supply lovely nannies for the youngest children which meant we were able to ski safe in the knowledge they were well looked after.
In addition to skiing, the swimming pool is very popular with the kids (don't forget speedos for the guys, they're pretty keen on them round here!)
I can't recommend Chalet Marmotte highly enough: it's a spacious, homely, welcoming chalet which is perfect for a winter holiday - and no doubt a summer one too. We had a superb time and can't wait to get back for more.
