Overview

About the property

Luxury & seclusion in a beautiful and traditional house

The cider tower was built as part of a steading in the early 18th century and was originally a windmill used for pressing apples from the local orchard. The whole steading fell into disrepair long ago but was gradually restored in 2002 by the previous owners. The cider tower is a grade b listed building, the renovation winning a prestigious award from the galloway preservation society for the best restoration and preservation project of that year.

Today the cider tower provides very comfortable and peaceful luxury accommodation for two. It is set in beautiful countryside yet only 10 minutes walk into town.

The master bedroom on the ground floor has a magnificent four poster bed with bathroom and utility across the hall.

Upstairs is the fully equipped kitchen and dining area.

Three further steps take you up to the cosy sitting room with minstrels gallery above.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Cider Tower is one of the very best places we have holidayed in and as previous guests have already said it all, we just say thank you for providing such a well equipped, comfortable and clean base for us to happily return to after some wonderful days out and about walking, bird watching and just generally enjoying this lovely corner of Scotland

We will be back.

A wonderful experience all round

  • 5 of 5

A very high standard and eccentric with it. Bedroom at the bottom was perfect given the hot weather and the very top space was great for a relaxing read. Excellent kitchen, bathroom and sitting room in the levels between. A place to get away from it all but be just a few minutes drive from the centre of Kirkcudbright.

Absolutely perfect, quirky quaint home from home. Everything you need for a perfect holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this fab holiday let. I love quirky rentals and this was superb. The bed was comfy and beautiful. The area is amazing with so much on offer. Beaches perfect scenery, wildlife. The people are super friendly and the pace of life relaxing. A week here went by so quick. Can certainly recommend The Cider Tower.

An enjoyable stay

  • 4 of 5

A great place to stay for peace and quiet. Transport is required to visit Kirkcudbright, unless you’re okay with a good 10/15 minute walk to the nearest pub or restaurant. Although we are walkers, when you’ve done a decent length walk and return to clean up and go out, the last thing to do would be walking to the nearest restaurant! There’s no internet, so you’re stuck with terrestrial tv if that matters. There is a DVD player if you’re desperate! The place has everything you need and is comfortable and clean. There’s plenty of maps and ideas for days out. All in all a memorable stay, and definitely different from any other place we have stayed in!

Great accommodation on the edge of a lovely town.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for four nights in April and had a smashing break. The accommodation is immaculate, very well supplied and has the most comfortable bed imaginable. The ginger cake that greeted us was most welcome. Only a 10/15 minute walk to the centre of the town but far enough away to be totally peaceful (bring a torch for the short farm road up to the cottage if walking back in the dark). Kirkcudbright is an interesting arty town with nice places to eat - whether you want to go slightly posh or bring your own bottle of wine to the sit-in chipper (no corkage), there's something for everyone. Lovely quirky property

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely time at this unique property. Nice surroundings. Bit of a walk into town if you want to have a meal and a drink somewhere without driving. could definitely do with having some Wi-Fi. Not much channels to choose from on a night when the weather restricts you for a night out. Most people have laptops and tablets which would help in getting a film or something to watch...i mean...who doesn't have Wi-Fi nowadays. Nice holiday property if you are looking for nice surroundings ( nowhere to walk in the evening if you have a dog though. ) Would recommend for pet owners with small dogs who don't require much of a walk).

Owner's Response: Thank you for your constructive criticisms. We are so sorry that our lovely Cider Tower was a bit of walk into town for you. It is clear from the description and directions that the Tower is slightly out of town - this is what appeals to most guests and their dogs. There are numerous walks locally with several starting right from the front door. Leaflets with directions and a local OS map are readily available in the information pack on the kitchen table. Also, the Tower is not advertised as having Wifi and when you emailed last week we did confirm that this is the case and that there is free Wifi at most of the cafes in town. We did ask many of our guests last year whether we should have this installed - currently there is no phone line - the resounding response was "No thank you" as people wanted to get away from technology for a bit . We are keeping this under review but currently there is not a demand for Wifi to be installed - perhaps because there is a very good 4G signal available at the Tower which people use instead.

This is truly home away from home. It has everything two people could possibly need.

The hospitality is wonderful. The location and amenities are fantastic. We hope to return and be able to rent again one day. We are already telling our friends to contact Patsy and Alan to book this beautiful spot when they travel to Kirkcudbright. I only wish we could have spent a couple more days relaxing and enjoying this area and apartment. Loved it.

Owner's Response: Hi Janet and Ed Thank you so much for the lovely review! It was so nice to meet you both and hear about where you come from in America and how your family had got there in the first place. I really enjoyed our chat over the tea and cake! Out and About

Galloway is known as “Scotland in miniature” and has something for everyone. The area is great for hill and coastal walking, fishing, golf and cycling. The ancient town of Kirkcudbright, a Royal Burgh since 1455, is historically very interesting and has a ruined castle, working harbour, museum and attractive High Street. There are also a number of independent shops and cafes. The town is known as “The Artist’s Town” having been home to EA Hornel, Jessie M King, EA Taylor and their friends in the last century. There are regular summer exhibitions and two permanent art galleries in the town. There is also a comprehensive programme of events throughout the spring and summer. (http://www.kirkcudbright.town/calendar/).

There are numerous gardens and places of interest within easy reach, including Threave and Logan Botanical Gardens.

You will find local information , maps and guides in The Tower to help you plan your stay. Or you may just want to sit outside on the patio with a glass of wine and admire the view!
