Pine Lodge is a bright and spacious 5 bedroom house with wonderful coastal views stretching from the estuary to Saunton and even Lundy Island in the distance. The house, which can accommodate up to 10 has a beautiful home-away-from-home atmosphere, and enjoys plenty of charm and character. Totally refurbished, the house is perfect for groups of friends, as well as large or multiple families.

Barnstaple is only a short drive from the house and features a range of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, a theatre, a multi-screen cinema and a leisure centre.

Sleeping up to 10 (plus 2 small children), Pine Lodge is bright and spacious and many of the tastefully decorated bedrooms enjoy lovely views of the countryside and North Devon coastline.

The well-equipped kitchen/breakfast room has a cranberry Range Master range cooker, which is wonderfully highlighted against the slate worktops and slate tiled floor.

The charming lounge, which has a wood burning stove set in a Minster fireplace, seats 10 on large comfortable leather sofas and cosy tub chairs. As for wining and dining, the separate dining room with open fireplace, offers plenty of space, and also seats 10 around the large dining room table.

The five bedrooms are split over two floors, and include a ground floor double with king size bed and en-suite bathroom, a first floor double with king size bed, a double/twin with zip and link beds, as well as a cot bed, a pretty twin and the Master with double bed, en-suite bathroom and large balcony.

Throughout the house there are are three bathrooms, including two en-suites, as well as a handy ground floor cloakroom, which is an added bonus for large groups staying at Pine Lodge. Like the other rooms in the house, all of the bathrooms have been fitted to a high standard with quality furniture.

Pine lodge, which is tucked away, but by no means is isolated, is approached via a private tree lined driveway in the village of Bickington, and is situated within 5 to 10 minutes walk of two pubs, and an Old English Inn (which serves all meals, including breakfast).

The pretty village of Instow, which has a beach with sand dunes and a variety of pubs serving food, is within a 10 minute drive, and the larger beach at Westward Ho! is less than a 20 minute drive away. These beaches and Barnstaple town can all be accessed by bus, which stops every 10 minutes at the bus stop that is only a 5 minute walk from the house.

Pine Lodge backs on to open fields where a public footpath allows you to enjoy short walks and the lovely views. There is a small park with children's' play area just 5 minutes walk away. The nearby scenic and car free Tarka Trail winds its way to Instow and beyond along the river bank providing a safe, level and easy cycle or walking route. Delicious refreshments provide a welcome break along the route at the Fremington Quay cafe, which was once a railway station. Bicycles can be hired locally next to Barnstaple railway station or at Fremington Quay.

The popular surfing beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe are only half an hour away by car. Also, easily reached is Exmoor National Park with stunning views of the moors, picnic areas and lazy rivers and streams, where cream teas are readily available.

Portmore driving range and golf course is 5 miles away and the well-known golf links of Westward Ho! is within a 20 minute drive. Barnstaple has an excellent tennis and leisure centre offering tennis, swimming, badminton, squash and other indoor activities for those rainy days. Barnstaple also has 10-pin bowling available at Lets Go Bowling. Other activities for children include The Big Sheep, which is a 15 minute drive, and the Milky Way that can be accessed in about 30 minutes. A wide range of leaflets about local attractions is located at the house.

Amazing House in lovely location

  • 5 of 5

There were 10 adults and we stayed in this amazing house over new year. It had everything we needed and was comfortable and warm and enough room for all of us to sit around the table in the dinning room and in the lounge. The kitchen is really well equipped and the views were lovely. It is in walking distance of Barnstaple and the bus stop is at the end of the bridle path , (which was a bit tricky because of the wind and rain we had and you definitely need a tourch. )We went to a few of the local pubs and we're made very welcome. We spent new year in The Old Barn and had a great time. The food at the Pelican fish and chip restaurant is lovely.

Would definitely recommend to family and friends.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your 5* review, we are so pleased that you found Pine Lodge comfortable and well equipped. The lane(bridle path) is rather dark in winter, there are torches in the house which can be used as long as they are replaced on the fire extinguishers in case they are needed. We hope you have better weather when hopefully you will visit us again. Paul and Trixie.

Perfect holiday house for all ages.

  • 5 of 5

Pine Lodge was a perfect house for a family gathering consisting of 4 generations. The downstairs bedroom was also used as an escape room for those that wanted peace and quiet, and the Games room was a hit with the grandchildren. The Kitchen was extremely well stocked with plenty of crockery and electrical items needed cooking for large numbers, but didn't realise we had to bring our own tea towels or oven gloves. However, there are plenty of good shops and outlets nearby. Sadly the weather was not at it's best so we could not take advantage of all the outside space, which would be wonderful if we had sunshine. The house was very peaceful with superb coastal views and no noise or intrusion from neighbors. It is in a perfect location for attractions like The Big Sheep, Arlington Court and the fabulous beaches of Woolacombe and Instow Bay.

A great house. Hope to return again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your great review, it was a pity that the weather was not better for you to enjoy the outside space. We are so sorry that you had to purchase tea towels and an oven glove, these are normally provided for our guests but the cleaners must have forgotten to put them out. Had we known they would have come around and provided them for you and we will make sure that they are available for future guests. We look forward to your next visit. Paul and Trixie

Home from home.

  • 5 of 5

Pine Lodge is a lovely, clean, tidy, cosy and well decorated house. The sitting room was smaller than expected from the photo but nevertheless quite adequate and comfortable. My mum (97) loved the downstairs room with en suite and lovely view of sheep grazing and the estuary. The games room was brilliant for children and adults alike and a big bonus was that it was accessible from the house. We felt the owners took good care of us, increasing the heating when they noticed, although in another country, that the outside temperature in Devon had dropped. We enjoyed a lovely home from home Christmas.

Very and spacious, clean, confortable

  • 5 of 5

The house was more than big enough for our party of 9 and well equipped to meet the needs of everyone from a 6 month old baby to 70 year old grandparents. There was everything one could possibly need to cook and plenty of cutlery and crockery. The garage was very useful for storing bikes and the garden was beautiful and gave plenty of room for children to let off steam. The living room was a comfortable and cosy place to sit in the evening. There were lots of thoughtful touches such as books and games.

Other Activities:

Many activities can be enjoyed within the local area. There are a number of footpaths nearby including the South West Coast Path and the Tarka Trail, which is also suitable for cyclists. Golf can be experienced at several course within easy reach, the nearest being Portmore in Barnstaple, however, the Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! is well worth a visit for the more experienced golfers. North Devon is also a great place to learn a number of water sports, with surfing being the most popular, many of the local beaches will offer lessons and equipment can be hired locally too.

Pine Lodge is ideally located for exploring North Devon with both Exmoor National Park and the beautiful coastline within easy reach. Situated on the edge of Barnstaple in the village of Bickington, the house is not too far from the beach or the local attractions. If you wish to explore further, North Cornwall, Dartmoor and North Somerset are also all within an hours drive.

Within Barnstaple itself there are several places to enjoy a meal with friends or family, as well as a range of shops and all the large supermarkets. The town is also home to a multi-screen cinema, a theatre, an indoor trampolining centre and a leisure complex. Bickington itself has its own village shop selling daily essentials and a few good pubs, including The Cedars, which is an Old English Inn. Just a few minutes walk from the house is the local bus stop, which regularly runs a service into Barnstaple, as well as to nearby towns and villages, including Westward Ho!.

The next village along from Bickington is Fremington, which is located on the estuary of the River Taw. The village has a few shops and a medical centre, as well as a wonderful cafe overlooking the estuary. The village is also a stop of the Tarka Trail, a largely traffic free, tarmac pathway ideal for cyclists and walkers, and easily accessed from Pine Lodge.

A 10 minute drive from the house is the pretty seaside village of Instow, which has a few good pubs well worth visiting and a nice estuary beach with sand dunes, which allows dogs all year round. From the beach a number of water sports can be enjoyed, including kite-surfing and kayaking. Across the estuary from Instow is Applecross, another lovely village with cobbled streets.

Continue along the Atlantic Highway and you will soon reach Westward Ho! one of North Devon's best beaches and ideal for families. You can also continue on the road to North Cornwall where Bude, Newquay and Perranporth await.

Located east of Pine Lodge are North Devon's most famous beaches, these include Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde. All are within easy reach and are ideal for families and water-sport enthusiasts.
