One look at The Old Post Office, situated on the Somerset and Dorset border and you will know you have made the right choice for your family holiday cottage. This pretty 17th century chocolate box thatched cottage has been carefully modernised, retaining its original architectural character, whilst making sure guests enjoy a comfortable holiday. It has a large private garden ideal for an evening glass of wine, and for the kids to run around and play games. There’s a village pub a mile away, and within a half an hours drive you can be in Lyme Regis with the whole of the Jurassic Coast to explore.
The Old Post Office has a large beamed living room with open fire and flagstone floor, which is located opposite the separate beamed dining room. Towards the rear of the cottage is the well-equipped beamed kitchen with gas range (for cooking) and tiled floor. The family bathroom with separate shower cubicle, roll top bath and toilet is neatly located at the foot of the stairs and is a very good size. On the first floor there are three bedrooms, including a double bedroom with 5ft bed and TV, a further facing double bedroom, and a lovely twin bedroom.
The Old Post Office has a large enclosed lawned garden to one side, as well as a pretty patio with garden furniture. There is also a second garden to the other side of the cottage, which features a pond; this garden is kept locked for the safety of any children but a key is provided to guests. The Old Post Office has off road parking for 3 to 4 cars.
The Old Post Office is an ideal family holiday home, with a large garden being the perfect place to relax in the evenings enjoying a meal or glass of wine. Many other attractions await, including Glastonbury Tor, Cheddar and the historic town of Sherborne. Shops are available in Shepton Beauchamp [2 miles away], and Ilminster [road closed at present means its 5 miles away].
The Old Post Office is happy to class itself as a baby and toddler friendly cottage, offering excellent facilities and information for families and meeting child safety guidelines. Facilities included are a cot, a high chair, a stair gate if necessary and a microwave. Suggestions for playgrounds, soft play centres, beaches and child friendly places to eat nearby are also provided in the cottage, along with information regarding the nearest chemist, doctor, supermarket and delivery services.
We bought this detached 17th century South Somerset cottage 15 years ago as a family get-away. We enjoy walking - just walk out the back gate to explore the local countryside and pub. We love this part of the world with its picturesque towns and villages, especially our local town of Ilminster with its Minster Church, Butter Market, weekly market, individual shops and lots of character.
The Jurassic Coastline is nearby; the nearest beach is Lyme Regis, 40 minutes away.
The cottage is on the Somerset Cycle Route so is great for people who love their bikes.
It has a large garden which we use to relax in and often to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine For children there is a travel cot, high chair, stair gate and fire guard. Towels & linen are provided.
Amanda purchased this cottage in 1999
We bought this detached 17th century South Somerset cottage with its large garden 15 years ago. It's convenient to the M5 and A303 yet when we are at the cottage we feel miles away from the hurly burley of urban life.
We love visiting beaches - Jurassic, Dorset, & South Somerset coast and North Somerset & Devon, or walk around Exmoor & Blackdown hills, Mendips and Cheddar Gorge.
We enjoy walking - just walk out the back gate to explore the local countryside and pub. Shopping at the local town of Ilminster with its Minster Church, Butter Market, weekly market, individual shops and lots of character is a delight.
The cottage is on the Somerset Cycle Route.
We relax in the garden - enjoying a meal and glass of wine, or in front of an open log fire.
The property was well maintained and full of lovely touches. Our group was made up of 3 ladies and 2 dogs and we all had a wonderful time. The local pubs were great (and very friendly to us and our dogs) and the cottage had everything you could need to make your stay relaxing and peaceful. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and very welcome after a long journey. Thank you for the wonderful stay, I can certainly recommend you to other guests.
Wonderful cottage, so relaxing with everything to hand. Other property owners could learn a great deal from The Old Post Office's owners. We each like a sofa of our own to curl up on, and this property has no less than three! The shower works perfectly, keeps a constant temperature and is instantly adjustable. The bath is deep and luxurious and the bed (master bedroom) is so comfortable. We loved the gardens, particularly the little gated side garden, and were delighted at the variety of visiting birdlife - all sleek, fat and clearly well fed! The pond could do with a bit of clearing/tlc - it's so pretty and would look twice the size if one could actually see the water!
The generous welcome pack was much appreciated; a minimum of tea and milk really should be mandatory for all self-catering establishments, but the Post Office goes much further than this.
One very, very tiny niggle - the stair gate was in place when we arrived, so we removed it for the duration of our stay. Such paraphernalia could be stored away in a jiffy prior to the arrival of any all-adult guests.
All in all though a superb holiday in an amazing setting, and we have no hesitation in recommending the Post Office to all.
The Old Post Office was everything we had hoped it would be for our long awaited, traditional family Christmas. We arrived after dark to find the outside courtyard twinkling with Christmas lights, a beautiful tree in the living room with a log fire already laid in the hearth and a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge. The cottage was full of traditional olde worlde charm yet had the luxury of modern bathroom facilities and an extremely well equipped kitchen which made Christmas dinner easier to cook than had we been at home. Everything was as described on the website and very well maintained. The bed linens and towels were crisp and white. Can't recommend this cottage highly enough. My only negative comment would be that I didn't feel it would be safe to walk to the local pub in the dark as there were no pavements on the roads in the immediate vicinity
The cottage was beautiful furnished, clean and comfortable. We were given a lovely welcome pack on arrival and had many personal touches because we had young children. It is well situated for loads of attractions and places but there is also lots to explore on the doorstep. We had a wonderful time and would certainly consider returning in the future.
What a lovely, very comfortable, well equipped, clean cottage. Comfortable beds, cosy sitting room , a useful separate dining room as well as kitchen diner, Efficient heating system and a lovely open fire! There is plenty of space to park two cars and a spacious garden but sadly for visiting dogs or families with young children it is not secure. It is not fenced down one side which accesses onto the lane and immediately onto the junction of a fast busy road! It would be so simple to fence the garden or even fence the smaller court yard area, to allow visitors on a sunny day to have the back door open to allow dogs and or children unlimited access to this sunny haven. Previous visitors have left comments in the visitors book and yet nothing has been done about it. Perfect location ideal to visit the different sights and beauty spots of Somerset. Great dog walking in the immediate area and well located for heading in any direction. The pub, The Boar at Barrington is a must for all tastes.
Booked last minute but agent was great getting things sorted. Really nice welcome pack on arrival, plus a log fire starter kit! Nice touch :)
3 pretty bedrooms, modern shower plus roll-top bath, lovely gardens, perfectly clean and everything well maintained.
Great pub nearby (Barrington Boar) with excellent food but need a car or risk walking on country lanes.
Shame we couldn't BBQ (thatched roof) but everything else was great. Small issue with smell from drains and perhaps consider if ducking down, esp upstairs, will be an issue for any guests!
All in all a really lovely cottage in the countryside - would highly recommend.
