Overview

About the property

Lovely 1-bedroom cottage overlooking a loch and within walking distance of beach

The beautiful Lochend is a wonderful one bedroom Scottish Highland cottage overlooking Loch a'Mhulinn on the edge of Applecross on the west coast.

This quaint former estate workers cottage is tastefully decorated throughout and makes for a stunning base when exploring the breathtaking area. Just a half mile walk from the cottage is the gorgeous village of Applecross, home to a sandy beach and a few excellent places to eat.

The rural cottage, which has uninterrupted views across the sound to the islands of Raasay, Rona and Skye is the ideal destination for walkers, as well as wildlife watchers, with eagles, whooper swans, eider duck, seals and otters often seen around the area.

Inside the cottage there is a lovely warm sitting room with a leather sofa, a TV and a wood-burner. Next door to this is the well-equipped, modern kitchen that has everything you will need, including an electric oven, a fridge, a freezer, a microwave and a washing machine. The handy entrance porch is heated 24/7 and is a great place to dry wet boots or muddy outwear. There is even a useful lockable shed for bikes.

The bedroom at Lochend is a good size and has a king-size four-poster bed, as well as plenty of storage space. The views from the bedrooms are also wonderful. Next door to the bedroom is the bathroom, which is fitted with a Jacuzzi bath with power shower overhead; there is also a large heated towel rail.

In the private walled garden there is a nice patio area with sun loungers if you are a worshipper of the sun. There is also a teak table and bench so you can sit out and enjoy an “alfresco meal” while watching the sunsets. Remember, as we are so far north, the summer days are long and the nights are short. Lochend really does gives you maximum peace and tranquillity.

As the cottage is situated on croft land there are usually sheep around and you should see red deer roaming behind the cottage. As you walk out of the cottage gate you can take the foot path up to the higher ground where the views are even more spectacular.

Hills, birds, gourmet meals, pubs and peace

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage done up to provide comfort with a veranda and beautiful views and sunset. An absolutely perfect retreat for a foodie bird watcher who enjoys wild walking. Bird hide 5 minutes away with information, binoculars provided. Stonechats, larks; cormorant on the loch. Very tame deer in the woods and the bay. Very exciting route in and out over the Pass of the Cattle - highly recommended if your car is up to it. Good reading provided also, if needed, and TV and wifi. We enjoyed every minute and wished we had longer. Love to come back!

A gorgeous croft nestled into the side of the hill

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the property and my husband wouldn't stop thanking me for choosing it!Our first impressions were wow, what a stunning setting! Sitting out in the evenings looking out over the Loch towards the Isles of Sky and Rassay when the sun was going down were the best part of the day for us. So quiet and peaceful and absolutely at one with nature.

The cottage was very friendly, cosy and comfortable. The kitchen had been thoughtfully kitted out and I appreciated the shelf with condiments, etc, which made life easier. Everything was clean and well looked after. Sitting in bed with a cup of tea and looking out at the view over the Loch in the mornings were something else..

We did a lot of walking. The walk at the back of the cottage and through the enchanted dark mossy forest and down into Applecross was a walk that I had not discovered before and really enjoyed. We diverted through the ancient woodland one day and thought that that was magical too. We had a gorgeous meal at the Potting Shed and were always in and out of the Applecross pub for lunch or tea..Great food and a fab atmosphere, which is quite rare I think for Scottish pubs. I loved the Art gallery and craft shop which has sprung up since I was in Applecross last. And visiting the photographic gallery is a must. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cottage. We really didn't want to leave and will most certainly be back!

Cosy if a little tired

  • 4 of 5

The scenery makes up for any shortcoming of the property and it's co-resident. At least I hope it was only one and not several mice.

Not easy to find in the dark and having no idea where the house keys might be, I plumped for an educated guess and found it. The fire place was electric, which was a disappointment, but it kept it nice and warm What else could one want? Electric blankets, some of the wall sockets in working order (not all) and a lovely rug on a settee that was obviously much loved in the past. Worth the money? In that scenery I would agree. Anywhere else - not quite.

The cottage was lovely and the views were spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

On the cottage description, it says WiFi but we could not connect. Probably my fault but would be good to have some instructions. Also, on one site, we were led to believe there would be a wood burning stove but instead there is an electric wood effect heater. Other than that, it was perfect. And we will definitely come back.

Quiet location with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little cottage within walking distance of Applecross and good food at the local pub. Great to sit out an enjoy the views. Applecross is a small village with a well stocked village shop buy best to stock up with provisions before heading out to this remote village. The owner was very helpful when we had an issue with the dvd player which was quickly resolved

Other Activities:

This part of Scotland offers travellers a wealth of activities, obviously walking in the mountains is what most people come to Applecross to do but as it sits on the edge of the Sound to the islands of Raasay, Rona and Skye beyond the opportunity to watch wildlife such as whales and dolphins and Eagles overhead are plentiful.

People can go sailing and kayaking in the Sound or mountain biking from Lochend across the moors or along the country roads.

You can wonder down to the beautiful beach which is perfect for swimming, fishing or just relaxing. There are some amazing walks along this beautiful coast; eagles, eider duck, mergansers and sea-birds can be seen in the bays, as well as seals and otters.

The approach to Lochend and the village of Applecross is absolutely spectacular, you first have to go over the Bealach na Bà which is the highest road in Britain.

As you reach the summit and witness the panoramic view across to Skye in the south and Lewis and Harris in the far North. Once over the top you drop down to the Applecross Peninsular and eventually catch sight of Applecross Bay and it's beautiful sandy beach.

Applecross is a beautiful village with it's own small shop and well known pub, famous for excellent food.

Lochend is a great place to explore the East coast of Scotland and you can even watch the whales travelling North from the cottage.
