About this property

Crooked Lake - Charming countryside cottage

Set in the beautiful countryside just a few minutes drive from Bideford in North Devon is the charming Crooked Lake Cottage, a three bedroom property sleeping up to five.

The 17th century cottage is tucked away in the heart of the North Devon countryside, yet remains within easy reach of not only the pretty market town of Bideford but also the gorgeous North Devon coastline, which is home to some of the country's most loved beaches, including Westward Ho!, which is only a 15-20 minute drive.

Inside, the cottage is deceptively spacious with a good sized living room with multi-fuel burner, a handy conservatory overlooking the garden, a well-equipped kitchen and a separate dining room all located on the ground floor. Upstairs there are three tastefully decorated bedrooms, these include the Master with en-suite shower room, a pretty twin and a lovely single. There is also a large family bathroom.

Although full of modern day facilities to help make your stay comfortable, Crooked Lake Cottage also has plenty of period features, including open fireplaces and pretty window shutters.

Outside there is plenty of space for everyone in the wonderful gardens. At the rear of the cottage is an attractive enclosed garden complete with a babbling stream and a small wooden bridge, perfect for children to play and explore in complete safety, and a BBQ. The garden is also regularly visited by local wildlife. Crooked Lake Cottage also has off-road parking for two cars.

Please note: Due to the age of this property, there are many low ceiling beams and door frames.

Tranquility in Parkham
Fantastic cottage beautiful clean and fully of character. The cottage has a lovely stream running directly behind and sleeping in the back room or having a relaxing bath you can hear the babbling brook. Property manager was really amazing, friendly and helpful.

A few uninvited guests!
We were pleased to find the cottage easily but more than a little frustrated that we were unable to open the front door on arrival. Having unloaded all our belongings to the front door, it was then necessary to get back in the car and drive almost all the way back to Bideford to get a mobile signal to call Clare; the cleaner who was our point of contact. She subsequently informed us the door was recently painted so may need kicking! On return to the cottage, 2 of my boys gave a big push along with a bit of a kick! It turned out that it needed a strong push or pull every day we were coming or going from the cottage. This was frustrating to note. However, we found the cottage to be in good order and bedrooms beautifully presented. Having put everything away at night, I was shocked to discover that all my cool bags left in the kitchen had been thoroughly investigated by mice. There were a large number of mouse droppings along with urine trails inside the bags. The mice were in addition to the bats in the attic, something Clare told us about 2 days before arrival! Hearing them scratching about above us as we settled for the night was a little unnerving, more so for one of my son's. One of my 11yr old twins cried in his bed the first night, scared by an unexplainable experience! The location of the cottage was great in terms of access to places of interest but all the extra unexpected guests were something that should have been spelt out in the information advertising the cottage. In that regard I feel it is masking true features which guests should be aware of prior to booking.
