In the very heart of Lorna Doone country surrounded by a breathtaking landscape of rolling heather clad hills and valleys, The Hayloft offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Approached via a long sweeping driveway with only the owner's own home nearby, this idyllic location is just perfect for couples and small groups looking to get away from it all and serious walkers wanting unlimited walking straight from the door.
The Hayloft is situated in the middle of some of England's most beautiful countryside. Ancient woodlands, heather covered moors, babbling brooks and wonderful sea views are all accessible from the door. We have seven separate circular walks directly from The Hayloft ranging from four to nine miles long, each with their own special qualities. That's an amazing walk every day for seven days.
Malmsmead is a hamlet on Exmoor which is approximately 1 mile from The Hayloft. There is a lovely homewares/gift shop and the 'Lorna Doone Arms' where you can get a meal, afternoon tea and cake or take-away food. The Lorna Doone Arms is beside the river just beyond the packhorse bridge in Malmsmead. They are also licensed so you can enjoy a couple of drinks with a meal.
Brendon is our local village, approximately 3 miles west along the valley. The Staghunters Inn is the local pub, offering good home cooked food and a range of local beers.
The village of Porlock is approximately 6 miles from The Hayloft. It is a lovely Exmoor village and has three pubs, two grocery shops, a traditional local butcher, Post Office, chemist, cash machine, petrol station, hardware shop, visitor centre and a range of independent restaurants, shops and tea rooms. Lynmouth and Lynton are approx. 6 miles in the opposite direction. They have similar amenities and a good selection of cafes and restaurants. Both are well worth a visit.
Minehead is approximately 10 miles from the property (beyond Porlock). Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town and have longer opening hours), most major high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
Exmoor is often referred to as England's best kept secret, Exmoor is a wonderful holiday destination for anyone looking for a holiday in the great outdoors! There's so much to see and do, from short walks to long expeditions across the moors or horse riding, taking in a safari or sight-seeing at your own pace around the 'picture postcard' villages and hamlets.
