Overview

About the property

A Well Equipped, Modern Home Ideal For Families.

The house is a well-equipped home which provides all the home comforts in a beautiful setting. The bedrooms are spacious and airy, and there is a large play/utility room with a sofa bed for up to two extra guests. The master bedroom has a double bed, plenty of storage and an en-suite shower room. The second and third bedrooms are equal in size, one with a double bed the other with two singles.

There is a large family bathroom with bath and shower, and in the utility/play room there is a laundry cupboard with washing machine, iron, ironing board etc.

The kitchen is a real home-from-home providing you with everything you would need to cater for your family.

For families with younger children there is a high chair, plenty of plastic plates, bowls, cutlery and mugs. A handheld food blender is available for making baby food if required. There is a plastic bath, anti-slip mat in the main bathroom, a child step and potty. We have provided a Greco travel cot, but for health and safety reasons we are unable to provide an additional mattress for this. The Greco mattress in the cot is approximately 3cm thick and is washable.

There is a large wooden table seating eight in the kitchen, in addition to a large outdoor table on the patio. The house has UK Free view TV and fast WiFi. There is an iphone 5 charger on the bedside clock in the master bedroom, and a hairdryer for guests to use if they need to.

The large garden and pool are now fully enclosed and are the perfect place to play and relax in privacy. The garden gets the sun all day, and only becomes partly shaded at about 7pm. The pool has a lockable shell cover (see photos) which keeps the heat in during the night, and ensures that it is totally safe when locked. There is also an all weather table tennis table which provides hours of fun on the large patio, or you could simply relax on a sun lounger by the pool.

The house has both UK and French plugs in the kitchen, lounge, hall and Master bedroom, and the rest of the house has French plugs.

The property benefits from electric gates, which ensures that the garden is fully enclosed and safe for little ones to roam freely. There is parking for several cars. I would recommend bringing bikes to fully benefit from the brilliant location; the immaculate cycle paths will take you everywhere locally surrounded by beautiful scenery, but there are several places in the town where you can rent bikes.

The location is perfect for summer holiday, training for triathlons, and a great base for the Marathon du Medoc!

About Mary B

We are two British teachers who have been coming to France for 30 years. We have rented holiday homes for years and recently purchased our own french house which we love to share with others. This is our first year renting and we are looking forward to welcoming new guests.

Mary B purchased this villa in 2015

Why Mary B chose Medoc area

We travelled extensively, but when we come to France, we kept coming back to Hourtin, which we first visited 20 years ago. The location is perfect having access to both the beach and lake, and it seems to be an undiscovered gem as it's still relatively unknown to many Brits. Our children have spend many summers in Hourtin, and we particularly like the fact that it is quiet, calm and safe. We have tried to make our home accessible for visitors so that it is a 'home from home'.

What makes this villa unique

This house has a wonderful location because it's peaceful and quiet, yet within ten minutes on a bike you can be sitting at the Port listening to live music, having tapas and drinking a chilled glass of wine. If you fancy the waves of the Atlantic coast, Hourtin Plage is just a short ten minute drive away. You can enjoy the wide, sandy beach which is carefully monitored by the life guards to ensure that the surfers and swimmers are both safe.

Like home from home

  • 5 of 5

So many special touches in the house and everything thought of from coffee machine to home and country magazines. Very spacious accommodation and light and airy.

All you should need and more outside - the BBQ, table tennis, loungers, parasols etc... The pool an excellent size and there are even pool toys and inflatables.

Our family had one of the best holidays we've had here and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I have returned to the UK very chilled and with many fond memories of the property and the beautiful surrounding area. We will definitely be back.

Thank you

The property is really well equipped for a family holiday in a lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

The property had everything we needed for a family holiday with young children. Mary has provided a cot, highchair, booster seat, children's cutlery etc The pool cover is excellent & provided peace of mind as our 1 year old and 3 year old played in the garden. It's extremely easy to pull on & off! The garden is really safe as its all enclosed & the gate can only be opened by a code. Our 3 year old loved scooting around the garden.

The house is very comfortable and our children enjoyed the basket of toys in the playroom. It's extremely useful having all the beach toys and beach mats too. The table tennis provided lots of entertainment for the adults.

Bikes allow you to reach the amenities quickly however we managed to park down by the port & beach in peak season without any problems. We did walk to the port for dinner- it took about 30 minutes but we also had lots of BBQs at the house.

One of the nicest things was having Mary at the end of the phone or email to answer any queries we had. Thank you Mary for a really great holiday house!

perfect location and nice and functional house

  • 5 of 5

Hourtin is a very good starting position for vacation around Bordeaux and the sea, and with a friendly village with good restaurant. The weather during our stay was a bit rainy and gray here in early June, but it also meant that we got off on several excursions. New in France but we will return - wherever we took ourselves, we got good food, wine and coffee.

The house was perfect for us - four adults and three children. We love to cook and the house was perfect for cooking and socializing at the dinner table, inside or out on the patio. It really was a house we felt at home.

There was so much to facilitate it; contact with Mary, dishwasher and washing machine, there was a bit dry goods, etc., outdoor play equipment for the children.

At the end of the stay, the weather became better and we could be out on the patio, barbecue and pool. We highly recommend!

Things we did as we are happy that we took the time to: Bourdeaux and their water mirror, the Dune du Pylac, oysters and wine in Pauillac, store La Cave in Hourtin, swim in the sea at Hourtin and eat crepes there. The best grocery store we went to yet with good price was Carrefour Lesparre. Small actions we made around the square in Hourtin.

Fantastic family villa - Bright, spacious, clean and well equipped property.

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a most enjoyable, relaxed family holiday here with our 3 children (ages 9, 8 and 5 years old). The villa is extremely well equipped and in a safe, secure, large, well maintained garden with pool. The children enjoyed playing in the large outside space during the day with the added option of keeping cosy by the wood burning stove in the evening when it was a bit cooler outside. Most evenings were spent outside enjoying the BBQ and peaceful location. The bedrooms are all large with clean, comfortable bedding and lots of storage (more than you would ever need for your holiday clothes). The entire property is very spacious and really homely - not always the case for holiday rentals. We hired bikes and enjoyed the short, comfortable and safe ride to the port in Hourtin where there are numerous restaurants and bars, a child friendly man-made beach by the lake and a children's play park. The town has enough shops to fulfil your daily needs and larger hypermarches are a short drive away. The nearby beach is beautiful and only a short 10 min drive away and then local area is typical rural France: world famous vineyards are a short drive away, and the local fare is wonderful (in particular the quality of fresh meats and cheeses, and superb locally baked patisserie). We are looking forward to returning again this year for our family summer holiday. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful location within close proximity to local attractions.

Our house is a well-equipped home, which provides all the home comforts in a beautiful setting. The bedrooms are spacious and airy, and there is a large play/utility room with a sofa bed for up to two extra guests. The kitchen is a real home-from-home providing you with everything you would need to cater for your family. There is a large wooden table seating eight in the kitchen, in addition to a large outdoor table on the patio. The large garden and pool are fully enclosed, and are the perfect place to play and relax in privacy.

The house has Freeview TV and fast wifi, and there is a stereo with aux cable facility so you can easily plug in your mp3/iPods.

Hourtin is a lively little town with all modern amenities. There is a traditional market three times a week in the village square, where you can sample fresh oysters with wine, or buy a huge range of local produce and specialities. The town is surrounded by numerous well maintained cycle paths making your visit perfect for all age groups, but it is particularly suitable for young families. Hourtin Port is an ideal location for having a relaxing drink as you come off the beautiful sandy beach. The lake is the largest inland lake in France and provides beautiful shallow fresh water which is particularly enjoyable for young children. There are life guards to watch the beach during the summer months. Also at the port, children can enjoy the Ile des Enfants which is a haven for the little ones. There is a huge wooden fort, climbing frames, sand pits and a huge aqua park in the centre of the freshwater inlet. It is a perfect place for adults to relax and watch their children run around and explore all the activities. There is also an evening market at the Port twice a week during the summer months.

The beaches of the Atlantic coast are just a short ten minute drive away, although the cycle paths do go directly to the beach if you are feeling energetic. The wide, sandy beaches stretch for miles, and are perfect for surfers to enjoy the waves. There is a surf school on the beach, but if you want to just relax and enjoy the sun this beach is ideal. There are some lovely restaurants, bars and shops at the beach, and even at the height of the season it is not over-crowded. Lacanau beach is a 20 minute drive away, where you could watch the World Surf Championships which take place there every summer, and there are more lively bars and restaurants to be found.

Further afield are a huge range of golf courses, some of which rank amongst the best in the world. The Medoc region is famed for its fine wines, so you can book a tour at any of the grand chateaux; Margauz, Latour, Mouton Rothschild or Lafite. Bordeaux is only 40km away and is also well worth a visit to the historic centre.
