About Claire Lucas and Toby Ellison
We (Toby and Claire) bought Raftra Barn & Cottage in 2015, and have spent a lot of time & energy making the properties comfortable and characterful home-from-homes for you to enjoy and unwind in. We have lived in this part of Cornwall for 25 years.... Claire running art classes and being an artist, and Toby initially running the first backpackers hotel in the area at Whitesands Lodge in Sennen, and more recently setting up a Walk & Talk counselling service. We both love the outdoors and have started to plant trees and flowering shrubs in the 4 acre field that is adjacent to the barn.....so it'll be a wildlife haven in years to come.
Claire Lucas and Toby Ellison purchased this Barn in 2015
Why Claire Lucas and Toby Ellison chose Saint Levan
We love this place. It is relatively isolated, yet in such a friendly neighbourhood. Out of season you can walk for miles along the coast path and visit hidden coves without seeing a soul. And in the warmer months, although the area is busier, you can still find quiet spots to spend the day, overlooking turquoise bays that make you feel like you're in the Mediterranean! With fantastic scenery, unspoilt wild places with an abundance of wildlife....both on land and in the sea.....along with ancient sacred sites, pilgrim routes and a rich art scene...what more could we want?!
What makes this Barn unique
Sheltered gardens trap the sun all day, and look out over a field towards the sea....there are even sometimes deer grazing here. Swallows swoop over the property all spring and summer, and skylarks fill the air with their song. We have owls at night, & badger tracks all over the place. And in the winter we have a murmuration of starlings. We are right near the crossroads of several ancient footpaths leading to wonderful hidden coves, turquoise beaches, magnificent cliffs and wild moors.

Lovely quiet property conveniently close to Lands End and Porthcurno
We had a great week here whilst performing all week at The Minack so we didn't actually spend too much time away from the theatre. The property is clean, tidy and well decorated and had all the facilities we required. Access is up the farm drive off a no through road so traffic is minimal. We enjoyed good weather all week. Toby and Claire looked after us well and were swift to sort out a couple of problems we encountered. Would come back here again if in the area.
We had a perfect holiday in the Barn. Claire and Toby made it possible for us. The house is clean and rich of possibilities. We will visit it again, definitely.
A real hideaway - just the right size for 2 and the dog
The cottage had everything we needed for our stay - a cosy lounge and comfortable bed - enclosed garden, views over the fields. Claire and Toby were there if we needed help but respected our privacy - as we did theirs.
We could walk out of the gate and go in any direction on footpaths - beach, coastal path and across the fields to Treen. Just our sort of holiday - I think we will be back.
Great cottage fantastic location for walking log burner made it very cosy
We stayed for just over a week at Raftra Barn and had a wonderful time. We used it as a base to walk the coastal path between Penzance and St Ives. The local bus stop is very close to the property which is helpful when doing linear walks along the coast. The coast is also within walking distance of the barn and we'd recommend visiting the beaches at Porthcurno.
It's set in a peaceful location and the garden is a real sun trap (we were lucky with the weather!) It was the perfect getaway and chance to relax. The barn has everything you need for the stay including books and DVDs. You'll need your own car to get to restaurants and pubs. Claire the owner was very helpful and friendly.
Thanks for your lovely review Claire. There'll always be a watm welcome here for you even if we can't replicate the stunning weather you had!!
Three beautiful days that we'll always remember.
We had a fabulous 3 nights in this beautiful house. We arrived after dark, so had a wonderful surprise in the morning to see the view from the living room.....the photo's don't do it justice! The house was super comfortable & had everything we needed. Being our first trip to this part of Cornwall we didn't know the area, but Claire and Toby were very helpful suggesting places to eat and some really lovely walks, some right from the house... our top tip would be The Minack Theatre, an amazing amphitheatre set into the cliffs just a half hour walk away... the wildlife is abundant; so many birds, seals, stunning cliffs and moorland, and fields full of daffodils. We really recommend this place... we'll definitely be back!

Sennen Cove is 4 or 5 minute’s drive away, over a mile of sandy beach plus lifeguards.
