About Tracy Halliwell
John and Tracy have worked and lived all over the world and have always enjoyed interesting places with lots of experiences to offer.
Tracy Halliwell purchased this Farmhouse in 2015
Why Tracy Halliwell chose Old Cleeve
Lowood is an old 1823 farmhouse set in 4.5 acres of well maintained garden and fields, with a river running along the fields. Both of us fell in love with this house straight away. It combines personal comfort with space. Our kids spend hours playing outside on the climbing frame, croquet, badminton, paddling in the river and so on. The wooded area houses a lot of local flora and fauna, providing much for adults and children to explore. The local environs contain everything anyone could wish for, from the most sedentary to the most active. The house itself is on the edge of Roadwater, so although we are on the edge of the village, it feels like we're in the middle of the country, a perfect balance.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The unique benefits of this property are 4 acres of garden/field, access to 200m of the Washford river to paddle in (it's only about 2 feet deep).
2 dogs max. Not allowed upstairs or on furnishings
Kids play room and many activities.

Quirky old place but very dusty
The house looked lovely in the pictures and had some fantastic reviews so we were really excited to have a family Christmas there together. Unfortunately it was not what we had thought it was going to be. The lounge when we first walked in smelt very strongly of old dog: so much so that it made me feel like I was going to be sick and the blanket over the sofa in the other sitting room smelt like it had been on a dog bed. We had been told that dogs were not allowed upstairs, but the "bling room " had definitely had a smelly dog/s in it.
Everywhere in the house felt tired and dusty and in need of love. Our room (the Gold room) was so dusty we had to keep the windows open constantly. By the third day, despite taking antihistamines, the dust had got too much and I spent all that night sneezing and wheezing. Our room had damp marks on the walls and patches of missing wall paper around the window.
Two other members of our party also got very affected by the dust mites in the house. In the Blue room, the couple sleeping there had complained about how uncomfortable the bed was (as well as dusty: she never normally gets affected but was wheezing every night) . When they moved to another room on the last night, they found that the old bed was held up by wooden blocks. The sofa bed downstairs was so uncomfortable that we had to drag another mattress down to remake it. Part of the reason we had chosen this place was because it had such good reviews about the beds!
There was not enough wood made available for the fire in the living room for the days that we stayed, even though we didn't light the dining room stove and used that wood as well. It cost alot of money and for the price paid, we expected more. We had been told that it would be decorated for Christmas and there was a tired old plastic tree in the corner and some tired decorations over the mantelpiece, but we had alot of work to do when we arrived to make it feel nice and festive.
Despite it all, we had fun together and the dining room was lovely for our meals. The kitchen was a good social space for us to prepare and cook together,I loved the larder and the new bath was great. If some real time and energy was put into the house it would be really nice. It has lovely quirks and has lots of potential. Unfortunately it wasn't worth the price charged for it and meant that our Christmas together was not the wonderful holiday we had hoped for.
We're so sorry you weren't happy, we do take all your comments to heart and will see how we can improve. Unfortunately there was a guest immediately prior who had a dog, and obviously ignored the upstairs rule...so our fault for not getting rid of the smell fully, and similarly for dust....i've not had that feedback before so will see how I can rectify...it is a big old house though so difficult to eradicate fully i suspect....and may have been exacerbated by us just having completed work on the back terrace.
I'm a little dissappointed in your comments that the house was not as expected though , as you did visit on 2 occasions prior to your booking .Also, all of the beds are brand new so any blocks are part of the bed structure, and the sofa bed isn't normally used as a proper bed so yes will be more uncomfortable. As for Christmas decorations we try not to 'overdecorate' as it is a very personal thing so only generally have the christmas tree up...we don't believe in cutting down real trees, so yes it is a 'fake' tree but a top of the range one...and logs..we do leave 2 full baskets of logs, but ask guests to provide their own from that point on, which is generally acceptable, as the house is fully central heated and controlled by the guests...but apologies again if you were expecting more, we can look at how we can improve that.
Thanks for your feedback and i'm on the case!
Great for a big family gathering with children
Lowood was perfect for a big family gathering with 3 generations; 13 adults, 2 children, babies and dogs. The children loved playing in the garden and finding the Harry Potter cupboard under the stairs. Whilst all very clean and pleasant, some of the bathrooms and loos are a bit unusual and a few are a tricky for the less mobile. The kitchen was well equipped (with a few minor exceptions like water glasses) and ideal for cooking large family meals. Thank you for a lovely stay.
80th birthday gathering
We had a wonderful time at Lowood cottage over the bank holiday weekend.
Ages ranged from 80- 6 months plus two dogs, the weather was wonderful which always helps but the house and garden absolutely made our weekend.
Every thing we could have needed was there , the beds were clean and comfortable.
The children loved the trampoline and the Harry Potter cupboard.
We would all highly recommended this property for a family gathering.
Amazing stay for a large family gathering
We had a brilliant time at Lowood, with 18 of us (12 adults, 6 kids) all able to gather extremely comfortably for a family holiday. It felt like a home away from home; liveable and cosy but really spacious, and with extra special parts for adults and kids alike (trampoline, huge outside dinner table and thrones, Harry Potter secrets, beautiful walks nearby and plentiful bedrooms). The beds were comfy and the kids adored the jungle room with all the toys and paintings. Beaches and castles were a really short drive away and so made days out with the whole family very easy. Tracy was also available by phone if we needed, and we are definitely considering coming back again. Thank you so much for having us!
Wonderful house for family weekend away
We all loved Lowood especially the children. Perfect place for a relaxing weekend away. We did not feel the need to go anywhere else. There were indoor and outdoor games - in fact everything you could possibly need and the house was delightfully quirky and well equipped. Tracy was very helpful and dealt with our special requests. Excellent.
The pictures and description dont do this house justice. We had such a wonderful weekend away in this gorgeous house. The hosts were helpful, the place was clean and well maintained, and there were lots of unexpected surprises throughout. Thank you!
