A quiet getaway with local shops, well located for Normandy tourist attraction

The Owl Barn has undergone a further refurbishment for the 2017 season which has seen a complete renovation of the downstairs bedroom area to include a separate toilet and shower room.

The property was tastefully renovated in 2016 to provide a generous master bedroom (with free sky TV and en-suite), 2 twin bedrooms and a large family bath/shower room on the first floor. the downstairs bedroom also has a double bed.

Set in its own large private south west facing garden, complete with above ground splash pool, the barn also has access to a communal games room featuring table tennis, pool, giant chess and table football amongst others.

This ex dairy farm is set on Hill 309 which featured significantly in June 1945 during the allied breakout of the bocage region (Operation Bluecoat) and enjoys magnificent views (over 20miles) of the village of St Martins-des-Besaces and the Vire valley.

St Martin des Besaces is centrally located to all of Normandy's tourist sites including all the 5 beaches, Pegasus bridge, Bayeux and Caen. The nearest beach is 20mins drive.

We now have four sheep and 8 chickens all of which children are welcome to help feed, water and look after. Eggs are laid daily and are great fun to collect. we welcome dogs but, with the farm animals we ask caution whilst on the site.

About Ian Brand

Previously employed in Major construction (Terminal 5 and Venetian Macau to name but a few!) my wife and I took early retirement to run a canal boat company in Leighton Buzzard - UK. After that great success we have now settled in France to fulfil a dream for us - to own and run a Gite complex in Northern France.

We are very centrally located in Normandy just 20 minutes from Caen and 20 mins from the Omaha Beach. The property is located on Hill 309 - a major objective during the war as the allies broke out from the D-Day beaches.

The views are stunning across the Vire valley but, whilst remaining a farming region (our neighbor is a dairy farmer) we are only 15minutes from 3 major towns offering all the shopping anyone could wish for.

A True Taste of Norman Life

When I was searching for a place to stay in Normandy, I was trying to decide between a beach house or something in the country. My husband and I had been in the area before but our three traveling buddies hadn't. This place was the perfect find! The three bathrooms were perfect for our group - two couples and a single man. The bedrooms were spacious; the beds comfy. It was only a couple of miles from the tiny little town that had an adequate market and an amazing bakery for fresh baguettes and croissants every morning.

Ian and Cecilia are gracious hosts who live right across the driveway. They answered all our questions, provided info on local WWII sites, let us use their washer and provided entertaining conversation.

In short, out of the six VRBOs that we have used on this trip to France and Portugal, this property was our hands-down favorite. The beautiful pastoral countryside, the welcoming people and the rich history of the area all combined to make this the most memorable part of our trip.

Lovely, peaceful place!

Nicely renovated, with more renovations to come, apparently. Friendly and helpful hosts. Situated ~30 min from Bayeux in pretty countryside near a village with essential supplies. We enjoyed our stay very much!

My extended family and I spent 3 nights in the Owl Barn and we all loved every second of our short stay.

Ian was so welcoming and such a great host.... taking the grandchildren to feed the sheep, the goose, the chickens and they were so enthralled with it all, especially collecting the eggs.

The property itself was way beyond what we had expected and the main bathroom is simply gigantic. Everything was just perfect. The wood burning stove at the beginning of April was so homely and sinking into the huge sofa, well who would want to move. We cooked some great meals in the kitchen and everyone had masses of space with 4 large bedrooms.

When we left we spent the next few nights in a 3 bed mobile home .... the whole 3 bed mobile home which would have fitted into the Owl Barn's living room twice over!

Our sincere thanks to Ian for such a lovely few days.

Value for the money.

Leuke in rustige omgeving gelegen verbouwde schuur. Alles is er en leuke spelletjes kelder. Gastvrije en vriendelijke verhuurder. Paar minpuntjes: cv doet het (nog) niet. Toiletpapier niet doorspoelen en geen stopcontacten in badkamers, wel via los verlengsnoer. Slecht licht op spiegel in benedenste badkamer. Goede matrassen en fijne houtkachel. Dorp met enkel de hoognodige voorzieningen. Wel centraal gelegen voor bezoek aan Normandië.

Gut geräumiges Haus, sehr nette Vermieter

Wir haben mit 4 Erwachsenen und 2 Kindern 3 Nächte in dem Haus sehr entspannt und gemütlich verbracht. Es war Herbst und wir haben besonders genossen vor dem warmen Kaminofen zu sitzen, der eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre hergestellt hat.

Die Vermieter waren sehr hilfsbereit und konnten uns wertvolle Tipps geben fuer Ausfluege in die Umgebung.
