Casa do Vizinho João reinvents contemporary design. The house was rebuilt from an early XXª century Azorean rural architecture preserving its roots from traditional construction with basalt stone from ancient volcanoes and local cedar wood from exotic Cryptomeria forests. Delightful typical Kitchen with everything you need to cook your favorite food, including an old Azorean firewood oven. Master bedroom with double bed (140X200cm), bedside tables, reading lamps and large wardrobe. 2º Bedroom with two fairly sized single beds (100 X 200cm), night table, wardrobe, southern exposure window. On request it’s possible to add a baby bed. In the surrounding area you will enjoy the best whale watching and swimming with dolphin’s tours. You also will find pleasant Marina offering services such as bar, diving and sailing tours. For sunny days where you simply want to relax you have a lovely beach just 5 minutes’ walk (Calhau d’Areia).
Filomena is a school teacher. Miguel works at the local government. He's also owner of TERRA AZUL - azores whale watching. Together they have two lovely daughters age 9 and 15.
A passion for travel and a candid hospitality inspired them to restore an old rural house next to their property offering tourists a distinct and personal holiday experience discovering Azores. To be honest, they see this as a new life challenge: an opportunity to share their love for the island’s nature and culture with other people enjoying a genuine and authentic Azorean lifestyle. You are very much welcome!
Luís Cravinho purchased this house in 2001

The property is as good as it appears in the photos. The new remodel has beautifully blended the old architecture with a clean, modern design. It is spacious with a large kitchen, large bathroom, delightful patio area, loft living room (with a view of the ocean) and two large bedrooms. The location is central to the island which allows one to explore all the magnificent gems east, west, north and south. The beaches nearby are also beautiful and easy to swim at. Best of all was the host, Miguel. He epitomizes the azoreans with his kind hospitality. I highly recommend this accommodation.
Staying in this lovely guest house, with Miguel and Filomena as our hosts, made our trip to beautiful Sao Miguel island a wonderful and unforgettable experience for our whole family.
The house itself has been lovingly restored and captures the traditional spirit of the Azores (it is truly stunning), while providing all the modern conveniences such as high speed wireless internet and new appliances to make our stay relaxing and easy. Our family of four (with children aged 8 and 13) could spread out and feel at home during our two week stay, with lots of room to spare. Upon arrival, the house was immaculately clean, with fresh fruit and a sampling of local delicacies waiting for us. We had plenty of privacy, even a charming walled garden and patio where we could enjoy the sunshine or the shade of a large fig tree, and hang laundry or beach towels to dry.
Filomena and Miguel live close by and helped us in so many ways. Whether we needed directions to the local beaches or supermarket, tips for good places to eat, contacts for deep sea fishing or (of course!) whale watching and dolphin swimming, or even a doctor when our son needed medical care unexpectedly, Miguel and Filomena made sure that we had everything we needed.
Even more than the practical benefits of having such knowledgeable and generous hosts, we truly felt a part of the local community and experienced the Azores in ways we never could have otherwise. Miguel and Filomena's love of the Island is contagious, and we are already looking forward to our next visit!
This has been my very best experience of renting a house for vacations. Every thing exceeded my best expectations. The owners are true hosts, their service is excellent and provided our family the best suggestions to enjoy the island to its full.
The house is so well decorated, all seems in the right place to welcome you in. Simple and plain and so nice at the same time and so cozy. The patio is a magnificent place for relaxing and meditation. One of the nights, I couldn't resist to stay out until dawn, enjoying the night sky full of stars. What a peaceful moment. Children loved the patio too and took long showers with the garden hose.
We would have stayed in doors more if it wasn't for the activities on a daily basis. The weather was fantastic and invited outdoors activities all day long. We'll return in winter, for sure, expecting to have some rainy days to stay in the house and light up that fantastic traditional oven and bake some nice food.
Do not forget to follow Mr. Cravinho recommendations of Portuguese wines, buy and taste them all, it's a delight for the senses.
Ask him about the Whale Boat "Sra de Fátima" you'll see what a great story teller he is and how much heart he puts into his words. The boat is a piece of History and a live museum, not to miss.
We had not the chance to do all we wanted, 2 weeks are too short in this island to see and to do all we were suggested by Mr. Cravinho apart from our own plans. This is not a problem as we decided we'll be coming back and repeat the stay at this great house and these great hosts more often.
Thank you for being so nice to us.
Filomena and Miguel are the best hosts that one guest can have.
Miguel represents the true Azorean soul, is a Nature lover ... and he is one of the most respected local sailors. He even (re)built one of famous old "whaling boat". We were invited to sail on this historic boat a few times. It was amazing.
The house is perfect; size, architecture, design, light, localization (also close to the beach). Beautiful indeed !
Ask them - nicely - about all the things that you want to do ... and they will tell you all the "secret spots", for food, cultural, sports/activities, beaches, and off course Nature.
If you prove to be a good guest, you may be invited to dine at their place, right next door ;-)
Next year I will be back
Cheers to all ! Azores is the place !
The house is exactly as it appears in the pictures: modern, warm and with everything you need. I spent there one week with my family and - even if most of the time we were out, visiting this beautiful island - we really enjoyed our stay in the house. Overall, the best price-quality I found in the Azores during my holiday.
Finally, Miguel and his family have been really friendly and provided all kinds of information we needed. Thank you Miguel !
Very stylish house, nicely decorated. Bring your ear-plugs, if you are sensible to street noise, since the 2 bedrooms face directly the street.
However, only few cars use the street during night and day but drive very fast. The house was cleaned very well. This is also true for the dishes. Well equipped kitchen. You can pick figs from the tree in the small garden at the back. Miguel, the owner is super-friendly and easygoing. His house is directly beside this rental home. Had some difficulties to contact him via e-mail, so better call him on his mobile or send a short message. He also gives you a lot of recommendations, what to do in the area.
All in all a wonderful vacation. Our full recommendations. And thank you, Miguel.
In the surrounding area you have the best WHALE WATCHING and SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS tours with azoreswhalewatch. Also find a pleasant marina offering services such as bar, diving and sailing tours. On request we can recommend other activities: cannoning, biking & paddle, birdwatching and typical restaurants. For sunny days where you simply want to relax at the beach you will find it 5 minutes’ walk. You can also snorkel inside an extinct volcano crater in the middle of the ocean: the Ilhéu de Vila Franca.
