Overview

About the property

2-Bedroom Timber Cottage with Large Living Room/Kitchen in a Rural Setting

We like to think of the cabin as 'small but perfectly formed' and furnished to the highest standard. The living room features a cast iron stove, extremely comfortable soft furnishings, original artwork and the world's most beguiling rocking chair. There’s a patio door which looks out over our top fields to the woodland beyond. The kitchen area is fully fitted with fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and all of the usual accessories such as kettle, microwave and toaster and there’s a round dining table for the family to enjoy eating together.

Unlike many other 'log cabin' self-catering holiday homes, ours is not one of a number where you can be victim to noisy neighbours; it sits on its own over 150 meters from the farm yard. Visitors have already told us that what they've enjoyed most is the peace and tranquility that it offers after a busy day doing holiday things.

Our visitors have told us that they've enjoyed the very comfortable beds: a king-sized double bed in one room and twin beds in the other. All bed linen and towels are provided and heating and hot water is included.

Sit out on the decking area and relax but be careful before you venture out early in the morning because we often have deer, brown hares and other wildlife coming down to graze and they're easily frightened - there's a pair of binoculars you can use if you enjoy wildlife watching.

You'll need a car to move to and fro at Belstane Log Cabin but just three miles away there's a train station where the trains to Edinburgh and Glasgow run approximately every hour and from Balerno there's a bus service into Edinburgh every fifteen minutes or so. Parking is easy to find for both services.

West Lothian is stacked with things to do from country walks, to golf, fishing and for the kids there’s plenty to do: swimming pools, the ‘Jump Station’ trampoline event, our very own local, and award winning Five Sister Zoo and many more. If you’re a TV watcher of epic dramas then West Lothian, which is liberally peppered with castles is where several of them, like Outlander are filmed.

And of course, there’s a host of historic sites within easy reach to visit from Linlithgow Palace to the world famous Roslin Chapel which dates back almost a thousand years to the Knights Templarand where scenes from The Da Vinci Code were filmed.

About Fiona Rice

Hi, I'm Fi ('Fee' - short for Fiona). I was born at Belstane and have lived here most my life - when I wasn't pursuing my career as an international water skier I returned to take over my parents' farming operation with my husband Dave. We down-sized our farming operation a few years back but Belstane is still working livestock operation. This is a lovely place to live and we thought we'd like to share it with you.

Fiona Rice purchased this house in 2016

Why Fiona Rice chose Kirknewton

As we already said, we love living here, it's very rural yet there's loads going on and it's just a bus or train ride from the nearest village into Edinburgh with all that that city has to offer. We thought we'd like to share Belstane with you (we like having people around) so we decided to build a cabin in our hay field. The cabin sits on its own and you'll be able to enjoy the local wildlife, as likely as not, if you're an early riser, seeing deer in the field or wood adjacent to the cabin.

What makes this house unique

The cabin is in a very rural and private setting, sitting on its own in tree-fringed fields. Here you can enjoy everything that a country holiday has to offer from walking & cycling to golf and fishing with many more sports that you might like to try your hand at such as clay pigeon shooting or rock climbing.

Notes:
Many of our guest have commented that what they really enjoyed about our cabin was the seclusion and isolation in a very tranquil, pastoral location. At Belstane Log Cabin you're not thrust into close contact with other holidaymakers - there aren't any - your nearest neighbour will be the owners some 150 yards away in the farm yard. Despite this, we are within easy reach of Edinburgh, the Festival City and buses or trains are a mere three miles away. Wets Lothian and the surrounding area offers lots to do from country walks right here on Belstane to adventure sports to golf and fishing.

Lovely holiday cottage

  • 4 of 5

Ideal for people wanting to take dogs because it is in the middle of a field so they can run around (provide there are no animals in it) and not disturb anyone else. The cottage is very well equipped but does not currently have internet connection. Owners very friendly and helpful.

Gorgeous log cabin in the most fantastic setting.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is very well appointed and thought out with everything we needed for our stay. It is in the most beautiful setting and so very peaceful to return to after 4 busy days at the show we were attending at the Royal Highland showground. We would love to come back to stay and explore the area when we have more time to spare.

Jolie maison au milieu des boutons d'or !!

  • 5 of 5

Belstane Log Cabin is a brand new self-catering holiday home situated in the countryside on the edge of the Pentland Regional Park not far from Edinburgh. Sitting alone in 14 acres of tree-fringed fields it is the perfect location for a tranquil and contemplative countryside holiday with wildlife and birdwatching readily on hand.

But don't let that put you off if you also want a more activity-oriented holiday. Belstane is very close to a whole myriad of activities from golf to fishing, from rock climbing to mountain biking and with the Festival City of Edinburgh only a short bus or train ride from the nearest village, there's everything on hand that this ancient capital city has to offer: ancient historic buildings such as Holyrood Palace (the Queen's Edinburgh home), Edinburgh Castle the world's most impressive castle, dominating the Edinburgh skyline and many more. And don't forget, Edinburgh Zoo is the only place outside China where you can see giant pandas - as well as its famed display of penguins.

Both locally and in the city of Edinburgh, we're blessed with many fine places to eat, from local take-aways of the highest quality to fine, five-star dining in and around the city.
