Wayside Cottage is a charming, comfortable, fully equipped, traditional cottage, 15 minutes' walk from the amenities of Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District.
Wayside cottage is very warm and welcoming. Although it is a very old house - a Grade II Listed Building, almost 400 years old with numerous exposed oak beams and slate floors - it has been modernised to a high standard of comfort whilst retaining its period charm. Many of our visitors return year after year.
The cottage is situated in the hamlet of Clappersgate, near the head of Lake Windermere, which is very convenient for exploring the central Lake District. The pretty villages of Hawkshead, Grasmere, Bowness, Keswick and Coniston are a short drive away, while the many shops, restaurants, pubs and cinemas of Ambleside are only a short walk away. It makes a good base for a walking holiday with many fine walks from the door.
The accommodation is well laid out and sleeps up to six adults in one double and two twin bedrooms.
From the door the entrance hall, which has a traditional floor of slate flagstones, gives access to the lounge, the spacious kitchen/ dining room, the shower room.
The lounge - which has fell views - has a leather suite with seating for six, digital TV/DVD and a log-burning stove set in the original feature fireplace.
The spacious kitchen/dining room has been refitted to a high standard with oak units, granite worktops and Neff appliances. It has a slate floor and is very well equipped with a full range of modern appliances including fridge-freezer, dishwasher, double electric fan oven, dual gas/electric hob, microwave and a radio/CD/USB player. The large farmhouse-style dining table is ideal for family meals.
The shower room with WC and handbasin also contains the washer-dryer.
Upstairs on the first floor are two bedrooms, one double and one with twin beds, both with original fireplaces and furnished with antique pine,. The double bedroom has exposed beams and fell views of Wansfell Pike.
The main bathroom, with shaver point, hand basin, toilet and electric shower over a magnificent, very large, antique iron bath, is also on this floor.
A second staircase leads to the third bedroom, with exposed roof beams, twin pine beds and a DVD player.
The cottage has gas central heating and all rooms, except the shower room (which has a heated towel rail), have radiators with individual thermostatic controls. Windows have secondary glazing which silences daytime road traffic noise. (There is almost no traffic at night and Clappersgate is then as quiet as anywhere in the country.)
There is also a secure log store/shed with room to store bicycles. There is a telephone landline for incoming and local calls. WiFi is included.
There is reserved parking for two cars in a shared private car park and further parking is available not far away should it be required. For loading/ unloading vehicles can be parked temporarily on the pavement immediately outside the door.
All bed linen and towels are provided. A well behaved pet is welcome but it must be kept downstairs and not allowed into the bedrooms. Wayside cottage has no garden but the path up Loughrigg fell and the riverside walk along the Brathay are just a few metres away.
Please note: Wayside cottage has no garden.
The cottage has been inspected by Visit England and awarded a Four Star rating.
