Peaceful Haven - in the midst of natural wonders, perfect hosts, convenient to sites

  • 5 of 5

Amazing location, privacy, nature, perfect hosts - we love to cook and eat, watch birds, do easy hiking and take photos. The cottage gave as a perfect space for all of these. The space is/has:

- very private and quiet, seems isolated once on the property, but access to grocery stores and routes to sites were within 20 minutes' driving time

- stunning view - we were there in April before leaves appeared so we saw snow-covered mountains every day

- perfect hosts - gave us plenty of information before arrival so we did not need to be met and shown around - procedures were made familiar before our arrival and all worked as expected upon arrival; hosts were available and responsive to questions by e-mail

- numerous maps and a hiking guide for the local area

- clean as a whistle, room in kitchen drawers for our groceries, and yet has some basics stocked (salt, sugar, coffee, coffee filters, pepper)

- well-stocked with equipment - portable oven for baking and roasting, slice toaster, large contact grill, electric water cooker, 2-plate electric hob, electric coffee brewer, freezer compartment in refrigerator, teapot, cooking pots with lids and a skillet, well-maintained wood stove with grate and screen, well-heated space, good water pressure, utility room with brooms, vacuum, extra blankets, guest slippers, rain jacket, everything one needs

- most convenient shopping for us was in Mossfellsbaer - Kronan grocery market, local bakery and Vinbudin for wines all within a short walk of each other. Also - recycle bottles and plastics in parking lot public bins at Kronan. Touring company extremeisland.is which operates Golden Circle Tours (and other tours) had a pickup at Hotel Laxnes in Mossfellsbaer

- as any good cook knows - bring your own "good" knives. Other than that, we found everything in the kitchen we needed to cook memorable meals with local, fresh ingredients

- local sites within 2 hours - Golden Circle tour of crater, waterfalls, geysers; high plateau and views of glaciers, Akranes lighthouse and tide pools, Bogarnes, Snaefellsnes peninsula with birds, waterfalls, beaches, lava fields, Hraunfoss, Children's waterfall, "The CAVE" a show cave and Sturtshellir and unguided lava cave - keep driving on the gravel road beyond Husafel for some gorgeous view of glacier and horse farms, even if not visiting the caves, national park where early parliament sat and where two geological plates meet and create spectacular landscape

A beautiful cottage in amazing surroundings

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Siggi's cottage for a week in March and had a wonderful time. The cottage is in a stunning location, it feels really secluded but is still on a 40 minute drive to Reykjavik. It's also ideally placed to drive onto the Golden Circle, which we did on a few days.

Inside the cottage everything is clean and decorated to a high standard and is perfect for two people. It's really warm and cosy and was so nice to come back to after a day spent exploring Iceland. Siggi was a great host and was really responsive whenever we had a question to ask.

The only slight negative we had was that we had to deal with quite a lot of flies during our time there. Siggi provided us with a repellent spray, but we were still dealing with around 5-10 flies a day with a handheld vacuum. It might just be the time of year we were there though.

I would also mention that the internet access is limited, so if you're planning on bringing a tablet or other device to stream stuff during the evenings (there isn't a TV) then this wouldn't be possible. It's absolutely fine for just browsing the internet/checking emails though.

Overall, we'd highly recommend Siggi's cottage and would definitely consider it a place to stay if we visit Iceland again.

Cosy cottage with incredible scenery.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was small and cosy, perfect for two people. We used the fireplace, saw the northern lights and couldn't get enough of the scenery.

Absolutely Breathtaking

  • 5 of 5

I hate to say this, because it will make it harder to find this place available again, but, in the interest of fairness, I have to say that this was the nicest home I have stayed in. The area, the layout, everything about the home was fantastic. The Host was the most helpful I have run across. We were snowed in and loved every minute of it. When the sky cleared we were able to drive through some incredibly breath taking scenery.

Ideal place for a trip to Iceland

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has everything you need and is in a great location. Can sleep 4 comfortably, but we just had 2 and used the bed in the upstairs loft.

Only drawback might be that it's far away from restaurant and grocery store options, but as we quickly learned most things far from grocery stores and restaurants in Iceland because there isn't much in terms of food options outside of Reykjavik.

Be aware too, that there is a gate you have to undo to open and close each time when leaving. Wasn't and big issue, for me, but it might be difficult for some.

Also, some rentals in Iceland charge per mile for overages, so look into this location and think about how far you'll be driving to see what you want to see.

All that said, those are important items to note, but they're minor vs how great and affordable this place is. Pick up some groceries and use the kithen, which is fully equipped and will save a bunch on food.

Plus Siggi is one of the best owners to work with, so do your research to make sure the location works, and if it does than I would definitely recommend staying here.

Peaceful location and beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The owner was amazing to work with and extremely helpful and responsive. We stayed for 3 nights in mid October. It was a perfect location to return to every night. Nice to have a comfortable place to call home when traveling and we loved having the fireplace in the evenings. It was a beautiful and quiet location and was perfect for taking day trips to southern and western Iceland, including into Reykjavik. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!

The Hvalfjordur fjord is one of the most attractive and magnificent big fjords in Iceland and very close to the capital. From the cottage you can go further west as well as taking the route to the magnificent south cost. It is a 30 min.drive to Reykjavik as well as a 30 min. drive to Thingvellir and from there further south. Doing The Golden Circle from the cottage is the thing to do.
