Description

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Middleham - WENSLEYDALE END TERRACE HOUSE

Three bedrooms sleeping 5, conservatory and open fire.

Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac on the outskirts of Middleham, just 5 minutes walk from the village centre and castle, Kelda Garthr (Tranquil Garden) is an ideal base to explore North Yorkshire.

Kelda Garthr is a three bedroom, centrally heated self-catering house, offering one double with wall mounted television, one twin and one single bedroom, sleeping a maximum of 5. The comfortable lounge to the rear has all the usual facilities including a television, DVD player, CD player and X-box 360. A good selection of books and games are also available. This room also has an open fire with logs provided for you to use if you wish. There is an adjoining conservatory, and this along with the lounge and two rear bedrooms have stunning views over the fields at the rear of the house. The garden at the rear has been designed to attract birds and many varieties can be seen. The property has a bathroom with bath and walk-in shower with the added convenience of a downstairs WC. The kitchen has the usual facilities including a hob cooker, grill and oven, fridge with a small freezer compartment and a good sized dishwasher.

Two sets of golf clubs and a trolley are available for you to use should you wish to visit one of the courses in the area.

There is off road parking for up to three cars.

Unfortunately Kelda Garthr IS NOT suitable for wheelchair access.

The village has a convenience store, fish and chip shop, antique and art shops and pubs. In addition there is of course the castle, a children's play area and several stables should you have an interest in horse racing. The gallops are approximately half a mile away and the local horses (said to be several hundred) can be seen exercising most, if not every, morning here. Just a short 2 mile drive takes you to Leyburn with all the facilities you would expect from a small market town.

Why The Owner chose Yorkshire Dales

I have been visiting North Yorkshire for over 20 years and never tire of it. Having nearly purchased the house I rented all these years I decided to cast the net a little wider and looked at Middleham as one of the possibilities. The moment I opened the lounge door and saw the view to the rear I fell in love with the place.

What makes this house unique

Just 12 miles from the A1 Middleham is a great base to explore North Yorkshire. York and Newcastle are an hour away if you like shopping, the East Yorkshire coast and Yorkshire Moors can be explored if you wish a full day out or maybe you would just like to drive through the scenic routes of the Yorkshire Dales.

If you like racehorses there are several stables in the village with a few hundred horses. The gallops nearby can be easily walked to where you can see them being exercised in a morning.

For steam railway enthusiasts there is the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion at Shildon and the preserved line just 2 miles away in Leyburn. If you are a little more adventurous there is the splendour of The North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Heartbeat territory.

There are also many historical sites to visit in the area. Jervaulx Abbey is just 3 miles away but there are many other sites including Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey, Richmond Castle, Helmsley Castle and Hartlepool Docks to name but a few.

Finally, 45 minutes away in Thirsk, is the James Herriot Museum, synonymous with glorious Yorkshire Dales.

Great base for walking and exploring the Eastern Dales

  • 5 of 5

Kelda Gathr was an excellent base for us (3 adults) who enjoy walking and exploring. We all love the Dales but have usually stayed further west or south. This time we wanted to be further east. Middleham itself is interesting and we were able to visit Richmond and Ripon (on showery days) as well as find many varied walks without having to drive too far. A little further away, near Hawes, we watched red squirrels - the highlight of the week for all of us.

The house was easy to find and had everything we needed for an enjoyable week. The views are stunning, the location quiet, and the owner very helpful with the questions we had before we went.

Efficient and cozy place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

A real 'English' experience staying at Kelda Garthr in Middleham (hint for Canadians: pronounced Middel-um): stone house and stone-walled garden, green pastures with stone fences, and, of course, sheep; shopping locally for and preparing English food, eating at the local pubs, the narrow roads, and the Public Footpaths.

The house worked well for the four of us, comfortable and everything we needed. The conservatory was a room we especially enjoyed, looking out over the countryside and garden. This location was excellent for exploring the Yorkshires. James was a great host, taking care of details and very helpful with tourist information before we arrived.

We would recommend this cottage for anyone who wants to explore the area. A car is a necessity, and very glad for a rental car with Navigation, as that took the difficulty out of driving on the left-hand side of the road while looking for unfamiliar places. Wherever one chooses to explore, there's beauty and history.

Some highlights: visiting Middleham Castle, St. Alkeda's Church and graveyard, Bolton Castle, Fountains Abbey and Water Gardens, Jervaulx Abbey; a drive over Buttertubs Pass stopping at Muker (for tea with scones, cream and jam) and a walk on a Public Footpath, visiting Wensleydale Creamery and sampling the delicious cheeses.

Amazing cottage, amazing views and an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We have had an excellent holiday in this wonderful cottage, exactly as described. We felt very much at home and thoroughly enjoyed the views from the conservatory and garden with plenty of birds visiting to keep us entertained. The cottage is clean, well maintained and fully equipped with everything you could want. There are plenty of books and board games for interests and entertainment. The owner is very helpful and friendly and is quick to respond any message sent.

It is well located within walking distance to the local village and all its amenities. Also within easy travel distance to the main attractions of the Yorkshire Dales with lots to see and do. It males an ideal base for driving and walking around the Dales.

We highly recommend this cottage and will visit again in the future.
