About the property

Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms with full bath, shower, W/C.

This bright, sunny, tastefully renovated house with private patio, pool and exquisite views to the Mediterranean is situated in a charming medieval village nestled among the vineyards near the wonderfully historic towns of Pezenas and Béziers . The house has two bedrooms upstairs, one with private balcony, both with southerly views. The open concept living and dining rooms and the kitchen open directly onto the patio and private pool area. Located in the beautiful Languedoc region, just 1/2-hour's drive from the beaches and fishing villages of the Mediterranean, this is quintessential wine country with rolling hills, tree-lined roads and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Shop in the colorful outdoor markets, enjoy top notch local fare in area restaurants or savour the fresh bounty of the Mediterranean sea and the flavors of the local wines and olive oil on the patio. Relax in true Mediterranean style, or keep busy with hiking, cycling, sightseeing, kayaking or golfing.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an incredible stay at your beautiful house and have nothing but praise for it's superb homely feel and exquisite furnishing, art and decoration. I know that we are speaking on behalf of Jonathan and Sarah, who also found the house a delight, the pool just fun and the views and surroundings unbeatable.

We all felt so relaxed, having many a peaceful hour with a glass of wine and a good book by the pool.

We will recommend Maison Candide to everyone and are planning another visit as soon as we can. I must say that your description of the house and its surroundings was delightfully accurate. We have only very happy memories of our stay and the sadness of its brevity in mind.

We hope that you will use any part of this e-mail to tell your potential guests what a pleasure Maison Candide was for us.

Charmed and Relaxed

  • 5 of 5

This was my second trip to Maison Candide and it was just as special as the first time I was there. Pat and Mel's home is charming, comfortable, and tastefully decorated with unique touches throughout. I enjoyed my time cooking (love the kitchen!), taking walks through the vineyards surrounding the village (this time of year the leaves are just starting to fill out the vines and the bursts of green cover the Herault Valley), and even this early in the season it was warm enough to laze in the sun on the patio (the weather was great!).

I love this property and location because it's easy to be active and venture out (winery visits, Lac de Salagou was a great hike leaving from Cirque de Moureze, farm stands, a city fix in Montpellier) and is equally and sometimes even more satisfying to just stay put. The house feels like it's set up for and afternoon of reading on the comfy couch or on the patio and your feet in the pool (with a chilled rosé or lemonade, bien sur!).

Pat and Mel were available throughout the booking process and it is clear they work hard to ensure their guests have everything they need for an easy and carefree stay. They always respond quickly.

Their recommendation to check out the flower market in Beziers (Friday mornings) was smashing and they also pointed me in the direction of the super-local Barrage des Olivettes where we took a quick swim (super refreshing). I will definitely recommend them to friends visiting the south of France and look forward myself to another visit to see Maison in another season. Merci and thank you!!

Excellent

  • 4 of 5

We felt at home right from the start. Comfortable, everything we needed , everything worked.

The scenery is beautiful and , with the exception of Carcasson ,we were not driving for hours. Moureze ,with it's spectacular rock formations was a favorite ,as was the Lac de Salagou.

The view of L'etang de Montady from the iron age fort at Oppidum d'enserune was fab.The Moliere section of the Vuliod Museum was a hoot . What a bad lad he was ! Had some good food and one not so good ,but you can't win them all !

The vendange was at full tilt during our stay and Mel and Pat are aware that there was a bit

of a noise problem due to the machinery next door. We would avoid these weeks next time ,but it wouldn't stop us visiting the house and the area again.

A lovely holiday and highly recommended .

Lovely house!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Maison Candide, we really appreciated that we were staying in a home where people had taken care in selecting the right furniture and decorations to make the place both charming and habitable. The pool was very refreshing during the hot weather and we had several BBQs on the patio. The village is very small and friendly - we particularly enjoyed talking to the winemakers and seeing the grapes come in from the harvest, also early morning walks up to the castle to see the view.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the compliment on the look and feel of Maison Candide. It is our much-loved "home," as opposed to a "rental property" and therein lies the distinction. We are so pleased that it made a difference to the quality of your holiday. As for the pool, the village, the winemakers and the walks to the chateau, they add significantly, making a stay at Maison Candide an authentic French experience.

The perfect relaxing holiday in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

What an absolutely delightful and beautiful home this is! We had the perfect holiday at Maison Candide at the beginning of August and could not have wished for anything more. The house is charming and and cosy yet has plenty of space to relax in, open enough for the family to be together without being on top of each other!

The views from the patio are breathtaking, and the pool is just the perfect size to relax and cool off in with a glass of the local wine (really local, a 5 minute walk away!).

Roquessels is a lovely, quiet village with a population of a little over 100, and has a hidden gem of a chateâu to explore and take in the incredible views. It’s the perfect location for day trips with so many wonderful villages to explore in the area.

We simply cannot wait to be back again!

Beautiful house in a lovely area of France

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Maison Candide for two weeks from end June . The house is very pretty and well equipped with everything you could need for a relaxing break. We loved the fact that is also very private and has a small swimming pool on the terrace. The house is very clean and bed was comfy. A car is essential.

Owner's Response: To be sure, the perfect holiday includes "having everything you need for a relaxing break." The addition of total privacy, quiet and pool that you mention only add to that enjoyment. We are so glad Maison Candide met your expectations.

Located in a small village in the very heart of the Faugères wine region, this is the best of all worlds—just 1/2-hour's drive to the fabulous beaches of the Mediterranean in Agde,Sète and Marseillan Plage. OR to the mountains. And 20 minutes to Béziers or Pézénas; an hour's drive to Montpellier; and 3-1/2 hour's drive to Barcelona, Spain!

Shopping, restaurants, cafes in neighboring Roujan, Faugères and Bédarieux. Pézénas, a lively, lovely city of manageable size and bursting at the seams with art, music, theater, charm and antiquity—and delightful eateries— is a mere 20-minute drive, mostly through the stunning vineyards.

Other Activities: Excellent cycling—the Tour de France passed by Roquessels in 2013! There's biking the Canal do Midi, kayaking, canoeing, hiking (new trails for cycling following the TTC trails/signage right from Roquessels), swimming in the gorges, visiting ancient ruins, wine tasting, all close by.

Attractions/day trips: Canal du Midi, Gorges d'Héric, St. Guilihem-le-Désert, Wine-tasting, historic sites and villages, open-air markets, a stone's throw from the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc with water sports, history, cultural activiites galore.
