Set in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Bigrigg, this period farmhouse is the perfect location for visiting the wonders of the Lake District National Park. A couple of miles away is the beautiful village of St Bees, which is famous for its beach and the start of the Coast to Coast Walk. From the back garden of the holiday property, you can sit back and enjoy the views of the sweeping fields. Guests are not far from Ravensglass, Muncaster Castle and Whitehaven. Beach 2½ miles. Shop 1½ miles, pub 2 miles and restaurant 2½ miles.
The property was clean, well furnished with good views to the front. After a long drive along a twisting steep farm track I finally arrived at a large car park. Unfortunately there were major problems with access to the property which was at the rear of the building. There was no mention in the web-site description of the many steep steps down to the property, or the alternative access being a long sloping path down to the back door neither being suitable for a person with a heart condition arriving alone with no help to unload the car especially. Worse was to come .. There was no heating working and no initial fuel for the log fire and the weather had turned colder that weekend. I tried ringing the contact number in the book but there was no answer. I looked for the usual file you always find in these types of property with all the instruction manuals for the electrical equipment which should have included the control of the heating system but no file existed. I tried to switch the oven on on Sunday and couldn't, and of course no instruction manual to help me. I tried ringing the contact number again but no reply. I tried getting in touch with the holiday agent on my laptop and there was no Wi-fi signal. Finally on Sunday evening after ringing relatives for help, they arrived and managed to get the heating on and the oven working and so after a thoroughly miserable weekend I had some relief from my troubles. Thank heavens I had relatives to help. The owner finally turned up on Tuesday as he had been in Madeira on holiday but had left no-one to cover if problems arose at the property. I was also informed that I could pick up a Wi-fi signal if I sat in the kitchen but that the signal was poor. I never did manage to get the laptop working properly during the whole time of my visit.
My verdict...A lovely property all of which counted for nothing because of the totally inept management of it which ruined my stay completely.
Lovely place to stay. Immaculately clean, warm and cosy and well equipped. Ideally situated and very easy to find. Quarry cottage is tucked out of the way with no passing traffic and a really peaceful rural location yet easy to get into Whitehaven and the surrounding areas. The owners live next door and were kind, generous and helpful in all all respects. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to returning again soon
