About Roger & Jane Hollings

Jane and Roger lived in the UK and bought the Winemaker's House and its two Gites (La Fleurie and Le Fitou) in June 2015 and it is now their permanent home. It fulfils their dream to live in France close to the Med. We have really enjoyed the experience so far, meeting all sorts of interesting and entertaining people; both guests and locals alike.

Roger & Jane Hollings purchased this barn in 2015

Why Roger & Jane Hollings chose Narbonne area

The Languedoc felt right for us from the start. Close to the Mediterranean but not overwhelmed by tourists, the area has an incredible and varied mix of beautiful landscapes and an almost limitless choice of things to do and places to visit. Couple this to friendly locals and great food and wine, the decision was easy.

The Winemakers House ticked all the boxes - characterful, in a great location and with an existing Gite business with the potential to develop further.

Home from home in beautiful Languedoc

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to La Fleurie and it did not disappoint on our return. The villa is comfortable and well appointed and the outside area with private pool provides a perfect retreat for outdoor dining and relaxing. Hosts Roger and Jane provide a warm welcome and are on hand to suggest outings, restaurants and local walks. Highly recommended.

A Real Gem!

  • 5 of 5

La Fleurie is undoubtedly one of the best places we have stayed in and we have travelled around France for years! This is an area rich in experience, colour and culture, do not miss out on the village of Minerve, our favourite. We are a senior married couple plus our working cocker! We love the ease of driving around this area, only the occasional car, a joy! Nothing worse than visiting somewhere and ending up in a traffic jam. The Gite guide gives a list of restaurants so follow that. We tried a few and all are good. Our favourite was L'O à la Bouche at Le Somail (an hour’s lovely walk along the Canal du Midi – 25 minutes through the vineyards or a 5 minute drive from La Fleurie). Sit outside next to the canal. La Fleurie is one of two “gites" at Winemaker’s House and is totally detached from the main house, which is occupied by the owners Roger and Jane (and Lupin the dog). You can see La Fleurie layout on the website. It is well fitted out and tastefully decorated. The kitchen had everything we could wish for including a lovely welcome packet to tide us over, beers and wine included. A good Intermarche is 7 minutes by car away for general provisions and fuel. There is a small “supermarket” in the village that has fresh bread and a host of other stuff.

We only used the downstairs bedroom/bathroom. Bed was good and firm and shower was great. Two of our most important requirements. Wifi is strong and TV is “Freeview”. There is a small but well stocked library. But the real gem of La Fleurie is the walled garden that contains the pool and surrounding terrace. It is totally secluded and is a sun trap. French law requires the ability to “screen off” the pool to protect unattended children. It is easily put away out of sight in normal circumstance. Parking is in a gated courtyard so your car is also safe! Roger and Jane are excellent hosts. There when you need them and always willing to help and advise. Jane is an enthusiastic walker and knows the area well. I am sure a bribe of some sort will convince her to show you one of her favourite walks accompanied by Lupin. We needed to get a vet for our dog’s tapeworm tablet (we took Drontal) and a health check for his pet passport. We used Dr David Halloy at Clinique Vétérinaire la Mayrale, 20 minutes by car just before Narbonne. Note! Booking an appointment is best done over the phone not by email.

If anyone requires further information on Pet Passports, Roger can pass on to you my contacts.

Wish we could've stayed longer

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at La Fleurie and loved it. The house was spacious, with three lovely ensuite bedrooms and a nicely equipped kitchen. Our hosts, Roger and Jane, provided us with a little welcome pack of food for our first dinner and breakfast which as greatly appreciated. Roger also took the time to make recommendations for places to visit, activities and local restaurants. The little village of Mirepeisset is quiet and we loved walking to get fresh croissants each morning at the little shop. The area is so full of things to do and places to visit that we could've easily spent two weeks. We would highly recommend the property and hope to return again. Our stay was perfect.

Very Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Me, my wife and her Dad, who is 92, were here last year for a week and loved it, so it was great to be back for a fortnight this time. Roger and Jane were pleased to see us and are the perfect hosts.

The upstairs rooms have been much improved by the addition of new windows, making it much brighter.

We have days in around the pool, which Roger keeps spotless and days out visiting the numerous places of interest that are very close at hand.

All in all, another wonderful holiday at La Fleurie, we would strongly recommend it to anyone !

Wonderful house and great hsts

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at Le Fleurie which is a beautiful big house with everything you could possibly need. The pool area is wonderful and the house is located in a lovely peaceful village in an area with lots to explore. Roger and Jane were terrific hosts who were able to offer lots of helpful advice on the area.

Comfortable accommodation in a beautiful village

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fabulous 2 weeks at La Fleurie. Jane and Roger were the perfect hosts, making our visit comfortable and with plenty of excellent suggestions for things to do and see. The accommodation was ideal for our family of 4 and the pool appreciated in the high temperatures. The area offered a range of different activities from cycling to canoeing to castles. Would definitely recommend this as a holiday destination.

The ancient city of Narbonne is just a 15 km drive. Well worth a visit for its Roman road, cathedral, canal and famous covered market.

Carcassonne is a favourite destination with its old fortified city that has starred in many a film. It is an easy 40 minute drive.

The Mediterranean is only 30-40 minutes away and there are several great beaches within easy reach - Gruissan, Narbonne Plage, La Franqui and Leucate to name but a few.

For the slightly more adventurous there is kayaking in Roquebrun on the River Orb. (This is highly recommended from personal experience) as well as white water rafting in the Pyrenees.

Another must see are the Cathar Castles. Quiberus and Peyrepertuse are two spectacular examples and are an hour or so away.

Let's not forget the wine. Languedoc Roussillon is the biggest wine producing area in France with many famous names - Fitou, Minervois, Corbieres and St Chinian. Mirepeisset has its own domain - Les Herbes Saintes.

Bike rides (bike hire can easily be arranged), horse riding, walking, boat trips on the Canal du Midi are all readily available. A typical comment from our guests is that there is so much to do they will have to come back!
