About Roger & Jane Hollings

Jane and Roger lived in the UK and bought the Winemaker's House and its two Gites (La Fleurie and Le Fitou) in June 2015 and it is now their permanent home. It fulfils their dream to live in France close to the Med. We have really enjoyed the experience so far, meeting all sorts of interesting and entertaining people; both guests and locals alike.

Roger & Jane Hollings purchased this barn in 2015

Why Roger & Jane Hollings chose Mirepeisset

The Languedoc felt right for us from the start. Close to the Mediterranean but not overwhelmed by tourists, the area has an incredible and varied mix of beautiful landscapes and an almost limitless choice of things to do and places to visit. Couple this to friendly locals and great food and wine, the decision was easy.

The Winemakers House ticked all the boxes - characterful, in a great location and with an existing Gite business with the potential to develop further.

A well equipped gite in a lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

We spent an enjoyable week in Le Fleurie during the last week in October. The weather in late October was warm and sunny – between 20 and 25 degrees each day with clear blue skies. Roger and Jane were very welcoming hosts, with lots of recommendations for places to eat and visit.

The gite is situated in a pleasant village and it was a treat to be able to walk to the village shop each morning for fresh bread and pastries. A walk of 25 minutes through the vineyard takes you to Le Somail which has 4 restaurants. The gite itself is very comfortable, clean and well equipped. The layout of the gite suited our family of 4 but it would also be perfect for 3 couples as each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. The garden is very private and consists of an outdoor eating and sun- bathing area next to a private pool.

Mirepeisset is only 35 minutes from lovely beaches at Gruissan Plage and Franqui Plage, pleasant fishing villages at Bages and Peyriac de mer, inland you can visit Carcassonne, any of the Cathar Castlles or the lovely village of Minerve. If you like to bike, walk or run (as we do) then you will find lots of trails to explore nearby. Or you might prefer to stumble between vineyards because the place is surrounded by them!

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a stay at La Fleurie. What a beautiful place, the house is exactly as described , immaculately clean and very well equipped. Beds were very comfortable. The whole property was spacious and airy. Everything was there for a perfect holiday. The pool and the walled garden is so picturesque and very safe with an array of stunning plants. The owners Roger and Jane were so informative and helpful with their local knowledge, we followed many of their suggestions. We would like to thank them both for helping us make the most of our holiday and for the extra little touches like making sure we had milk etc for when we arrived, much appreciated. The area where the property is situated is what you imagine a typical French village would be, lovely old buildings and just a chilled pace to life. We would definitely return to this property and I would and have already, recommended this property to family, friends and colleagues. An absolute gem of a place.

A lovely relaxing week

  • 5 of 5

The property was easy to find and as described, it is a characterful and tastefully presented Barn conversion with lovely pool in a secluded private area. It was well equipped with everything we needed and was spotlessly clean in all areas. The owners, Roger and Jane, were there to greet us and had thoughtfully provided everything for an evening meal and breakfast including some rather tasty local beer. They were extremely helpful in pointing out the local attractions, how to get there, where to park etc and also recommended and booked some really good places for us to eat. All this added to the relaxing ambience of the Gite. We have a dog and they welcomed her warmly and before leaving sorted out a vet for the pet passport to be signed off. The Gite is very comfortable and although the September weather was a bit of a disappointment in terms of temperature, (Roger and Jane said it was unusual and like November!), we were warm enough at night without the need for heating. The only issue with the unusually low night temperatures was that the unheated pool was fairly chilly, never gaining enough heat in the day to be comfortable. (I guess in the height of summer it would be an absolute delight!) Roger told us that he would be looking into getting a cover for next year. We visited Carcassonne (our main reason for choosing the area), a straightforward drive and again Roger had recommended a restaurant in the town which was great. We were able to walk through the vineyards to the nearest village on the Canal du Midi for a couple of evening meals, which were both very good. (If late September take a torch to find your way back, however, on a clear night the stars are beautiful and the milky way clearly visible). The actual village of Mirepeissot does have a couple of restaurants, but when we visited they were closed ( I think one opens at the weekend). It does however have a great little shop, a French ‘ Open All Hours’ that provided our morning croissants and bread, 2 minutes down the road. As a base for exploring the localities it is well positioned being just off the main road to ‘everywhere’. Unless you are really into walking a car is essential although there is bus service in the village. I got the feeling that Roger and Jane genuinely wanted us to make the most of our time there and they did this in an open and warm manner. A very relaxing week, Thank you.

Fantastic family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, son (age 13) and daughter (age 8) and I have just spent 2 fantastic weeks at La Fleurie and we would highly recommend this accommodation and area for a family holiday!

The Gite, location and activities went beyond our expectations and is certainly the best holiday we have had in France!

The spacious Gite is tastefully decorated and has a 400 year old stone wall and high ceiling which definitely gives it a 'wow' factor! It is clean, well equipped and each bedroom has an ensuite which is ideal after a day at the lake or beach. Outside there is a good size swimming pool (which Roger our host discreetly maintained on a daily basis), plenty of loungers and a garden table and chairs, all contained within a beautiful walled garden making it very private. Pool towels were provided too along with parasols and a cool box for a day at the lake or beach.

Our hosts Roger and Jane were very welcoming and extremely accommodating, booking activities for us and offering advice on restaurants and days out and accurate weather forecasts! On our arrival a welcome pack for our evening meal and breakfast (including wine and beer!) was provided and greatly appreciated after a long journey.

Mirepeisset is a quiet and very quaint village with a lovely little shop/bakery only a 5 minute walk away where we bought our daily croissants and baguettes! For a bigger food shop a supermarket is only a 5 min drive away.

We made the most of having our car and everywhere we visited was between 5-45 minutes away. Our days out that we would recommend include visiting Narbonne to see the tallest/smallest cathedral followed by a walk by the canal and finishing the day off with a delicious cake at the 'Delice Cake' cafe is a must! Kayaking, lake swimming and pedalo boating at stunning Roquebrun! The drive to Roquebrun is spectacular too! We really enjoyed an Olive oil tour and tasting at L'Oulibo which included a treasure hunt for the children to keep them interested. We also visited Fonserannes Locks at Bezier and Bezier town with its floating umbrellas and spotty streets on show in the summertime. We also highly recommend the soft sand beaches and clear seas of Gruissan Plage and La Franqui Plage. Jouarres lake was also very good and fairly quiet with a floating Aquapark for the children.

In the evening we ate twice at a lovely local restaurant in Mirepeisset called La Garenne and also visited the Marina at Gruissan to eat in restaurants overlooking the boats.

Home from home in beautiful Languedoc

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to La Fleurie and it did not disappoint on our return. The villa is comfortable and well appointed and the outside area with private pool provides a perfect retreat for outdoor dining and relaxing. Hosts Roger and Jane provide a warm welcome and are on hand to suggest outings, restaurants and local walks. Highly recommended.

The village has a general store providing all your basic needs including fresh bread and croissants and has two restaurants (one open all year round).

The ancient city of Narbonne is just a 15 km drive. Well worth a visit for its Roman road, cathedral, canal and famous covered market.

Carcassonne is a favourite destination with its old fortified city that has starred in many a film. It is an easy 40 minute drive.

The Mediterranean is only 30-40 minutes away and there are several great beaches within easy reach - Gruissan, Narbonne Plage, La Franqui and Leucate to name but a few.

For the slightly more adventurous there is kayaking in Roquebrun on the River Orb. (This is highly recommended from personal experience) as well as white water rafting in the Pyrenees.

Another must see are the Cathar Castles. Quiberus and Peyrepertuse are two spectacular examples and are an hour or so away.

Let's not forget the wine. Languedoc Roussillon is the biggest wine producing area in France with many famous names - Fitou, Minervois, Corbieres and St Chinian. Mirepeisset has its own domain - Les Herbes Saintes.

Bike rides (bike hire can easily be arranged), horse riding, walking, boat trips on the Canal du Midi are all readily available. A typical comment from our guests is that there is so much to do they will have to come back!
