Enjoy centre of old town in comfortable artistic environment
- English, Italian
We have owned the adjoining artist's studio since 1985 and have recently added this apartment to create an artist's residency program which is active in early and late summer. The rest of the year the apartment is available for weekly rental to visitors who have come to appreciate the myriad offerings of art and culture in Spoleto and the surrounding area.
Sophie purchased this Apartment in 2014
Why Sophie chose Spoleto
The working studio of a well-known international artist for decades and now dedicated to continuing that legacy through an international artist residency program, this unique building houses artists and art lovers who have created a singular creative environment from which to explore the town of Spoleto or to use as a base for the many nearby hilltowns of Umbria.

Great location , historic property
We felt at home in the Artist’s Retreat. The amenities were modern-good heating system since it was cold when we were there. Nice to have a washer and dryer. The kitchen had a dishwasher. I thought the place was really cool with the decorative beamed ceilings and stone floors so homey. I especially enjoyed the espresso maker. We could walk everywhere. We walked around the Rocha nightly. The quality restaurants in this area are a food lovers nirvana.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. It was a pleasure to have been able to host you and we hope you'll return to Spoleto for future visits!
The kitchen well equipped; the bed was so comfortable. Great location. The owner Sophie is very attentive and easy to contact. Clean, warm, just what we needed.
We loved the town and the beautiful apartment
The apartment was spacious and well furnished . All supplies were available for kitchen , washing machine and even personal supplies . All went above expectation . Sophie very attentive to all our needs ; was helpful in all respects .
Quaint and Quiet
Unfortunately our stay in Spoleto coincided with several earthquakes, so all the churches were closed, many roads were blocked, and the town was very quiet. One cannot park at the apartment so must park in a parking garage and haul bags uphill to the flat. The apartment itself is very quaint and old-fashioned but with some modern conveniences like a dishwasher. The furnace works very well. Both bathrooms are good. The kitchen is adequately equipped, although when I mentioned to the landlady the need for a toaster, she immediately said she would buy one. The apartment is clean but the kitchen area is a bit disorganized. Beds were comfortable. The location is very convenient to tour the city which is quite lovely. We also recommend visiting hill towns like Todi and Montefalco while in Spoleto. The landlady Sophie is American by birth and was very accommodating when we decided to cut our stay short by one night because of all the closures. If you don't need to park nearby and don't need modern, you will enjoy this property!
Thank you for staying in Spoleto despite the tremors to the east of us; we certainly hope you can return in calmer times! Just a note to other guests, Il Cortile is located in the pedestrian heart of the old city. We do provide a transit pass for our guests who arrive by car, allowing them to enter the center to load and unload bags and groceries, etc. Unfortunately, the center was entirely closed to traffic during this guest's visit to allow for inspection of the historic structures nearby. We do recommend then parking during your stay in one of the municipal lots. If you are arriving by train we can pick you up at the station.
The apartment was lovely and in a central location.
We were very impressed with the apartment. It is very well furnished with all the necessary amenities and Sophie is a great host who was on hand to help and advise us when called upon. We would recommend it as a great place to stay.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay and for your thoughtful comments. An indication of anything we could have done to earn that fifth star would be much appreciated. We do aim for a perfect rating from our guests and cannot improve without knowing where we have fallen short of your expectations. Thank you for staying with us and we hope you'll return soon!
Our stay at the Artist's Retreat could not have been better. The place is gorgeous, extremely well-equipped, large and perfectly located. Sophie is also great to work with. Our time in Spoleto was incredible and this beautiful apartment made it all the more so. We're already looking forward to a return visit. Spoleto is a magical place and you won't find a better place to stay than this apartment.
Located in the very center of the old town of Spoleto in the pedestrian zone but within easy walking distance of entrances to all three alternative pedestrian passageways from the old town to the new town below and the three municipal parking lots. All museums, theaters and historic sites as well as the best restaurants, cafes, and bars as well as multiple shops are located a street away but the house is on a quiet central courtyard on a residential street.
