Overview

About the property

The cottage is set in the beautiful quiet historic village of Bonsall on Masson Hill, although within 25 minutes you can walk to the Heights of Abraham cable car that leads to Matlock Bath which is a popular resort, some other nearby places of interest include Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Chatsworth, Carsington water and a little further afield Alton Towers.

The village of Bonsall benefits from two pubs which both offer a range of decent ales and food, the nearest of which is literally a stone’s throw from the front door, there is a café within 5 minutes walk overlooking the local children’s park and a small deli shop.

The cottage is a lovely family holiday home which has been refurbished, maintaining many traditional features which include exposed oak beams, original stone flags too the hall and recessed window seats. The cottage benefits from gas central heating, which is supplemented by a log burner.

The accommodation comprises:

On the ground floor; entrance hall, shower room and w/c. A large lounge leads off the hall which comfortably accommodates 8 people. The kitchen has a 6 seater dining table, range cooker and fitted kitchen.

Upstairs there is one king size bedroom, one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, there is a large bathroom with double ended bath.

A further two people can be accommodated on the sofa bed in the lounge taking the maximum occupancy to eight people ( you would need to fold the bed away each day to use the living room).

From all rooms there are views of the village or the surrounding countryside, the back stairs from the kitchen lead to the rear garden which has fantastic views and the field behind often has cows grazing (please don’t feed them!). There is a table and chairs to enjoy the view from. At the front of the property there is off road parking and a small front garden with seating, further parking is available on the street.

The cottage is child friendly and also two well behaved pets would be considered if kept downstairs (there is an additional cleaning fee for pets).

Whether hiking, hibernating or using Bonsall as a base to explore any of the other activities which are all available within 15 minute drive such as caving, rock climbing or sailing, I am sure you will enjoy staying here!

Great Find in a great village

  • 5 of 5

It turned out to be only two of us and our old dog but that was fine. Very comfortable and cozy with all you might want including maps, guides etc etc.

Fantastic upper terrace to sit on and nice secluded front garden which is equally attractive. It’s an easy walk to all amenities including the wonderful Barley Mow about 10minutes away. The village is unspoilt and it’s easy to get to the local towns for more places to eat and see. There are so many pathways it’s impossible to describe them all but Abraham Heights are very close.

We will definitely come again.

Lovely cosy cottage

  • 4 of 5

A wonderful place to spend Easter with the family. The cottage had everything we needed and was really cosy. It was very spacious for all of us and a great location for exploring the Peak District.

The village of Bonsall is very historic with lots of walks for the dog. We tried the Barley Mow pub which had a beer and music festival on. Even though we woke to snow on the day we were leaving the roads were passable thanks to the tractor going up and down.

Woils definitely recommend staying here for anyone who needs a bit more space and a good base.

Lovely stay, lovely cottage, great owner.

  • 5 of 5

We're a family of 6 with kids aged 8,6,3 and 1. We couldn't have been happier with the cottage and surrounding area. The cottage was really warm, had everything we needed and was really comfortable. The beds were really comfy, and that makes all the difference. There was also a great selection of games and dvds.

We didn't have to go far for things to do - we did a nice walk to Matlock bath, went to Gullivers Kingdom and to Cromford Mill. Had lovely dinners in the local pubs, especially the Barley Mo.

Overall, had a lovely stay and would recommend the house and the area without hesitation.

Perfect New Year!

  • 5 of 5

Spent 4 nights at this wonderful cottage, over the New Year period with my husband, two sons aged 13 & 11, the Mother in law & our well behaved pooch. We arrived in the evening & in a fresh stick of snow which was magical & beautiful. The cottage is all we wanted and more. Very pleased to find the place decorated for the season as wasn’t expecting that and it did cross my mind to take some decorations myself, wasn’t needed. The welcome pack of Fine foods & wine was much appreciated too. The cottage is much bigger than we expected, photos don’t do it justice and it was great for our family as there was space for everyone. The beds and even the sofa were wonderfully comfortable as we took turns in staying downstairs with the dog. The cottage is more than fully equipped with everything you need from WIFi to kitchen utensils! The decor was fascinating with lovely artifacts picked up from around the world it seemed. The gardens were lovely too, met by some very friendly cows in the back one morning! I gave the cottage 5 stars as it totally satisfied/surpassed my expectations of what staying in a 17th Century cottage would feel like. If you want stark, modern, minimalist surroundings then this is not the place for you. We adored the cottages quirks & imperfections as a building of this age should display. Bonsall itself a lovely village and we were welcomed in both Pubs (meal and the Kings Head wonderful, we didn’t eat at Barley Mow but loved our visit) both pubs welcoming to kids & dog...especially the dog!! Had a coffee at The Fountain, also very accommodating. Nice to stay in a village where visitors are truly welcomed by businesses & chatty locals alike. We did pop to Matlock Bath for a nosey and kids enjoyed the amusements...sadly wasn’t hungry so didn’t get Fish n Chips! Would love to return one day as didn’t see as much of The Peak District as intended as we were too chilled in Bonsall & the wonderful cottage!! Would like to thank Adam for allowing us to stay in the cottage and for his excellent, prompt communication throughout A+++

Ps. Nearly forgot the beautiful bathroom & the HUGE bath! Take your bubbles!

Owner's Response: Wow, Thank you for such a wonderful review! I am really happy you enjoyed your stay so much and glad that the cottage and the surrounding area was so appealing to you. It is truly beautiful when it snows, you are certainly welcome to return and carry on the exploring as you said there are always more things to do in the area, if you can make it out of the village! Thanks again for all the positive feedback, its appreciated. Regards Adam

Lovely cosy Christmas

  • 5 of 5

A house with great character, providing us with a great Christmas. Only thing I would change would be the 2 single beds are not very comfortable, and sink when you touch them. Apart from that it was really splendid!

Owner's Response: I am gad you had such a nice Christmas at our cottage, Its lovely in the snow! the mattresses on the single beds are new, and our children love them, however I take on board your comments regarding the softness of the base. Thank you for still giving a five star rating.
