About Charlene

Bill and Char purchased this Cottage and did major renovation. We have added family antiques as well as local art that we have purchased over the years. It is a 'home away from home' to us.

We do allow small pets because we are animal lovers and have a beautiful red bloodhound who occasionally answers to Coltrane.

Charlene purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Charlene chose Abingdon

We love Abingdon and wanted to share the fun of riding on the Virginia Creeper Trail, the wonderful Barter Theatre and our great restaurants. Everything is just steps away!

What makes this cottage unique

It is great to sit on the patio, drinking a cup of fresh brewed coffee and watch the sun rise oveer the mountains. The Cottages is comfortable and relaxing. It is easy to curl up on the couch on a rainy day and read one of the good books that are available.

Home Away From Home (only better!)

  • 5 of 5

This is our third time staying at the cottage and it is always a relaxing and convenient escape! We love the fact that we are literally footsteps from the VA Creeper Trail as well as a handful of great restaurants (128 Pecan is our favorite!). The accommodations are wonderful and the owners responsive. I hesitate to say how much we enjoy it because I would like to consider it a well-kept secret! Will be back again - hopefully soon!

Peaceful and Memorable Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was just a dream. I am a teacher and I have the summer off. I like to stay in places where my children can play outdoors and learn a lot of history. I stayed with my 3 children for a month. The place was beautiful and cozy. There was always something to do in Abingdon. The owner was very helpful and provided us with brochures that showed what surrounded Abingdon. She also recommended some beautiful places for us to visit. Because of its location, we were able to swim in waterfalls, go antiquing, visit historic civil war sights, and go hiking in other beautiful places. I really loved that it was in a location that allowed us to walk to the main attractions. My children really loved being here and were sad to go.The people in the town were very friendly. I can not say that for the people living in/or renting the surrounding places. Of course there will always be ignorant people any place you go, so it wasn't something I fretted over. Overall, it was a great experience, the owner's were friendly, and the place was amazing. I highly recommend this place to families with young children. One piece of advice, if you are used to ethnic food (ie. Mexican, Thai, etc.) , bring some of your own spices.

Owner's Response: Frank, I am so sorry about the neighbors. If I had known there was any problem, I would have contacted them directly. I am glad your visit was pleasant. Was it one of the neighbors on Gibson Street? Thanks, Charlene

Wonderful Stay- We Will Be Back!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage a few weeks ago and loved it. I don't think we have ever stayed at a rental that was so clean with so many personal touches- fresh flowers, homemade banana bread, etc. The cottage is beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the whirlpool tub. The book created by the owner with all the menus and information is very helpful. We found some great places to eat and really loved the local Farmer's Market. We will definitely be back and are already planning a trip for sometime in 2016.

What a treasure this cottage was for us - enough so a few of us stayed an extra week! The location is perfect- walking across the street to the Creeper Trail every morning, and a few blocks to everything else Abingdon was really beyond what we could have hoped for. The cottage is lovely and we immediately felt at home. Enjoyed cooking our farmer's market goodies in the beautiful kitchen and relaxing the end of the day in the cute living area. The beds are wonderful and bath perfect. Your personal touch is seen everywhere. THANK YOU for sharing!! Look forward to a return visit in October.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your terrific review! We want you to return and to think of our Cottage as your home away from home. We try to give a synopsis of the many attractions to see and to do in our favorite town of Abingdon. We have tried to add "little extras" so your visit will be more memorable. We are so fortunate to have so many locally owned restaurants and numerous activities to try.

Honeymoon Find Becomes Regular Tradition

  • 5 of 5

We happened to find this cottage as we were traveling from North Carolina to Minnesota. We booked our honeymoon there, sight unseen. It was perfect! Champagne awaited us in the refrigerator. We enjoyed the Barter theatre, rented bicycles and rode the Virginia Creeper Trail, shopped at the art depot, and relaxed in this beautiful small home. We have returned four times over the last ten years, often on our anniversary weekend. Each time, we have had a memorable, relaxing experience.

The cottage has a fully functional kitchen (pots and pans, utensils, fridge, coffee maker, microwave) and all the dishes, wine glasses, etc. you need to eat in. The beds are comfortable. The sheets and towels are luxurious. One of my favorite things is the book selection that is always being updated. I always find one or two titles that make it onto my "must read" list after a stay here. On a rainy day or an evening in, we also enjoy the DVD collection.

Other reviews have mentioned that the cottage is within walking distance to shops and attractions. Abingdon is very walkable, especially from this location.

Ideal Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The French Cottage in Abingdon is the perfect combination of comfort and convenience. Located across from the Creeper Trail and within walking distance to everything you could imagine doing in Abingdon from the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning to the Barter Theater in the evening. If you like dining in, the kitchen in the cottage is fully equipped! I felt at home the minute we arrived.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review! We want you to think of this Cottage as your home, too. It is enjoyable to go out to the many restaurants in Abingdon. But every once in a while, it's great to go "home" and sit down to eat on the patio while grilling a nice thick steak and sipping a glass of wine from Katbird's Wine Shop!
